Identifying Variables

Discuss with the students what they learned about the Mayas in their Topic lessons (their religion, social structure, architecture, language and numbers). Discuss and define multimedia (as well as audio and video). Inform the students that they will learn how to create a multimedia slide containing a picture (for a background), text, audio and video. Open Keynote and present a students slide from last year. Explain that they will create a similar multimedia slide on a topic of their choice about the Mayans, and then save it as a video file that can played on any computer. Ask the students to each choose one of the topics about the Mayans from the ones we discussed earlier, for the topic for their slide. Tell them that they should choose a topic that they can draw a picture for and talk about (they should try to talk about at least three points/details). Explain that their drawing, text, and video should all be about the same topic. For those who dont think they know three details on any of the topics, ask for volunteers to offer example details before the rest of the class. Once they have chosen their topics, ask them to find a talk partner and

tell them their topic and details (ensure the EAL students have appropriate partners who can give them the needed support). Open Kid Pix on the IWB. Introduce/review how to draw a picture (using thin black lines and filling closed areas with colour, and adding a solid colour background). Show the students the example from last year again, pointing out the layout of the objects on the page, especially that the background image is one only one half of the page to leave room for the video and text. Inform them that they will be shown how to add text in Keynote later, and that they should not add text in Kid Pix (either with the Pencil tool or the Text tool). Ask the students to go to their computers, open Kid Pix and draw a picture that is appropriate for their topic, and to add a solid colour background. [Show the students using the trackpads on the Macbook Pros how to draw with the Pencil tool.] Bring the students together again. Introduce the need to export their picture as a JPG file before it can be used in Keynote. Explain about file extensions. Demonstrate how to export a picture from Kid Pix, save it in their class folder, and then open it in Preview (pointing out that the exported picture is being viewed outside of Kid Pix). Ask the students to do the same, and to open their exported pictures in Preview. Bring the students together again. Ask how

I can save my video by dragging it to my folder and renaming it.

I can open Keynote. I can import my background picture and move it to the back. I can add my name and class, and a title (and make my title the largest). I can add a sentence about my topic. I can import my video. I can arrange (or align) the items on the slide. I can save my slide and export it as a Quicktiime (MOV) video.

many of them have used Photo Booth. Ask for a volunteer to come to the teachers computer (the computer connected to the IWB) to demonstrate how to open Photo Booth and create a video. Point out the success criteria for creating a video. Inform them that they will practice making their video in the lab, and take turns going to the next room to create their final videos when they are ready (where it is quieter). Ask the students to go to their computers and practice creating a video about their topic. Bring the students together again. Demonstrate how to open Keynote and create a new blank presentation (with a white background). Show the students how to import the exported picture into Keynote, move it to the back (behind the default textboxes), and add their name and class, a title, and a sentence about their topic. Show them how to align the objects on the slide, and remind them that their title should be larger than the other text on their slide. Ask the students to do the same, while those who are ready to make their final videos take turns going into the adjacent room to do so. Ask the students to assess each others work against the success criteria, and to give feedback on how their work might be improved. Ask them to make the improvements to their own work. Bring the students together again. Demonstrate how to save their slide as a Quicktime (MOV) file, and then play it in

Quicktime Player.
