Task 1
Before we take a look at the future tense, complete Task 1. There are no answers to this task as this is your opinion.

The Future Will

As you can see from the previous activity. When we use will to talk about the future we are usually talking about predictions ie something unplanned. Because it is a prediction we often cannot be 100% certain that it will happen, so we use words like possibly, may etc. We can also use expressions like I hope, I think, etc.

Future Will

The future will is formed like this:

Subject + Will/will not (wont) Base verb+ object

Eg. England will win the world cup A question in this tense is formed like this:
Will + Subject+ Base verb+ Object ?

The difference between will and going to

We also use going to to talk about future events.
Look at the four example sentences on the following slide and say when you think we use will and when you think we use be going to. Then check your answers on the slides to follow.

Present Continuous with future meaning

We can also use the present continuous tense with a future meaning.
FORM Are you doing anything tonight? Yes, Im playing tennis. Are you taking a holiday this year? Yes, were spending two weeks in Europe. USE We often use the present continuous to talk about things that people have arranged to do in the future The meaning is similar to be going to but it is more definite.

Present Simple tense with future meaning

We can also use the present simple tense with a future meaning:
FORM What time does your plane go? It leaves at 10 o clock and we arrive in Rome at 7.30 a.am. USE We often use the present simple to talk about a programme or timetable in the future.
