CHAPTER II

An Analysis on the Importance of Being Earnest


A. DIALOGUE Dialogue in the story is very important, if there is no dialogue, it cannot be called a drama story. With the dialogue we can learn the story of a conversation happened. The function of dialogue to give readers a variety of information needed to find out what the character of every player in the story from the dialogue that they speak. So the function of dialogues in this story is to provide necessary factual information.

B. STORY (PLOT) The plot of this story is forward plot. The story have plot which conceived of some stages, they are; exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and denouement.

Exposition Exposition occurs when Algernon was playing piano in the adjoining room, his servant, Lane came and gave tea for him, from lanes book, Algernon remember that Thursday night he have dinner with Lord Shoreman and Mr.Worthing. When he met Mr.Worthing problem in this story appear.

Raising Action Raising action occurs when Jack (Mr.Worthing) expressed his intention Algernon that he want to marry with Gwendolen, because he loved her so much. Initially Algernon

did not agree and did not approve of jack relationship with his cousin because he knows Aunt Augusta did not like Jack. From Jacks cigarette box, Algernon knew that Jack was lying , Jack finally told him that his name is Ernest in town and Jack in the village, Algernon give requirements if Jack want to relate with Gwendolen, Jack should tell who is Cecily, because Algernon was curious with her.

Climax The climax occurs when Gwendolen say that she likes the name of Ernest and has long dreamed of having husband named Ernest, she was glad find Jack, Gwendolen do not know Jack had lied her. They were in love and want to get married. Lady Bracknell does not like Jack because she did not know Jack's family, she want her daughter have a husband from a respectable family. Gwendolen disappointed and eventually runs away from home to the Jacks village to see him.

Falling Action Jack returned to his village, he's been told he has a brother named Ernest who always makes trouble. When he came home he was shocked Algernon was at home and claiming to be Ernest. Cecily is Jack's niece and called him uncle. Algernon loves Cecily and they fall in love. Cecily says that she loves the name of Ernest. Algernon confused he wanted to confess that his name Algernon but he was afraid Cecily did not like. Gwendolen and Cecily meet in the village they have misunderstanding because they thought that they like same Ernest.

Resolution/denouement Gwendolen and Cecily finally forgive Jack and Algernon have lied them. Lady Bracknell suddenly came to the village to pick up Gwendolen, she does not agree that his daughter marry with Jack, there she met Miss.Prism. Finally uncovered the secret that Jack is the nephew of Lady Bracknells, he younger brother of Algernon. Finally, Lady Bracknell approves relationship of Gwendolen and Jack and also Cecily and Algernon. After the check in the book, actually Jack's name was Ernest John. Gwendolen are happy to hear it and all people are happy.

C. CONFLICT The conflict happened in this story is called external conflict. Its happened between man and man, between Jack and Lady Bracknell. Lady Bracknell does not like Jack (Ernest) because she wanted his daughter to marry a noble family. Finally Gwendolen ran away from home and still want to marry Jack (Ernest) because she loved him very much. Another conflict between Jack and Gwendolen, Jack has been lying, his name is not Ernest but Jack, he knew Gwendolen loves the name of Ernest, finally he continued to lie. It also happens to Algernon, he was very curious about Cecily finally he lied saying that he is the younger brother of Jack Ernest in the village.

D. CHARACTERS 1. John Worthing, J.P. John as called Jack, he is Algernons friend, he came from the village. He was an intelligent and respected. He has a nephew that is Cecily. He is very loving and wants

to marry Gwendolen, but Gwendolens mother did not like it and forbade their relationship. He lied to everyone that his name is Ernest in town, Gwendolen loves Ernest's name so he still lied to him.

Based on the main part and roles of this story : He plays a major character. He is involved in this story, the story focuses him. From beginning story until the end his characters always appear. The problems arise from his lied about his name. Based on the personal traits of this story : He plays round character. He has lied to everyone. In the city he was called Ernest, but he is a Jack in the village and lied to everyone there that he had a brother named Ernest who always makes trouble. He has a different personality when he was in town and village. Based on the possibility to change : Jack as dynamic character. He has a different character when he was in town and village. In the village he becomes someone who is authoritative and respected. In the city he wanted to be Ernest did not want to admit that he was named Jack. He also lied when he had a brother named Ernest when he was in the village. Based on the normative value : He plays a protagonist role in this story. He has the determination to be successful in the city so he changed his name to Ernest. He very love Gwendolen, he tried to get

the blessing of Gwendolens mother who did not like him. beside that Jack always give attention to Cecily, he wanted Cecily grow up to be a smart girl. 2. Algernon Moncrieff Algernon is a friend of Jack, he handsome and from the noble families. He has family ties with Lady Bracknell, Gwendolen is his cousin. He who first know that Jack had lied about his name. Jack finally told him that his name is actually Jack and he has a nephew in the village named Cecily who only know if he had a brother named Ernest. Algernon was very curious to Cecily. Finally he went to the village claiming to be Ernest, Jacks brother.

Based on the main part and roles of this story : He as major character because the in the story , because from beginning until the end story he always appear. He as Jacks friend, he know that Jack lied about his name. He want help Jack to get his love, but he want know about Cecily so he went to village dan pretend become Ernest, Jacks brother. Finally he love with Cecily and continued his lied to get her love. Based on the personal traits of this story : He plays a round character. To avoid his problems, he always lying has a sick friend named Mr.Bunburry. he love Cecily and to get his love Algernon lie that he was Ernest with a different personality.

Based on the possibility to change : Algernon as dynamic character. He has a different personality when in town and village. In the city he a young man who likes having fun and glamorous life because he from a rich family. But when he met with Cecily he realized that he loved her. He wanted to be honest that his real name is Algernon, but he afraid Cecily angry and continued his lies. Based on the normative value : He plays a protagonist role in this story. In fact he lied become Ernest because he was curious about Cecily. He went to the village to meet her and eventually he fell in love with Cecily. To get her love, Algernon forced to lie on Cecily. 3. Gwendolen She is a pretty girl. She from a rich family. Her mother is Lady Bracknell, who wanted hier daughter to marry with a man from noble family. Gwendolen is educated girls who is obedient to her mother. She falls in love with Jack (Ernest). She always dreamed of having a husband named Ernest. They fell in love.

Based on the main part and roles of this story : She plays a minor character. She is a rich girl who loves Jack (Ernest). She has an obsession to have a husband named Ernest, she believed that a man named Ernest is an amazing man. Heard Gwendolen desire, Jack continued to lie about his real name, because Jack loves Gwendolen.

Based on the personal traits of this story : She plays a flat character in this story. Gwendolen has same personality in this story. From beginning story until the end she still love Jack and want to convince her mother to approve her relationship with Jack (Ernest). Based on the possibility to change : Gwendolen plays a static character. She have obsession have a husband named Ernest. She so glad know that Ernest (Jack) love her too. She want marry with him. And although she knows that Jack had lied her, she still love him and forgive him. Based on the normative value : She plays a protagonist role in this story. She a good girl who loved Ernest (Jack), she is very love and obedient to her mother, but in defense of her love she went to the village to meet with Ernest (Jack). Although she angry when she knew he lied, she finally forgave him and still loves Jack. 4. Lady Bracknell She is Gwendolens mother and Algernon's aunt, she is a perfectionist. She wanted her daughter to marry a rich man and from noble family. She did not approve of relationship between Gwendolen and Jack (Ernest), because she does not know jacks family. Based on the main part and roles of this story : She plays a minor character. She only a old woman who want her daughter marry with a rich man and from noble family.

Based on the personal traits of this story : She plays a flat character in this story. She still wanted her daughter will marry a rich man. She wants to defend her honor as a noble family. When she knew that Jack is her missing nephew, she had just agreed to Gwendolen and Jack's relationship.

Based on the possibility to change : She plays static character. She did not change her desire to find a rich husband from noble family for her daughter. She was forced Gwendolen to stay away from Jack (Ernest) because she did not know about Jacks family. Based on the normative value : She play a protagonist character. Actually she just wants her daughter Gwendolen happy so she wants Gwendolen to marry with a rich man from noble family, she does not want her daughter be suffer. When she knew that Jack is her nephew. Finally she agreed with Jack's relationship with Gwendolen. 5. Cecily Cardew She was a cheerful young girl and beautiful. Jack had considered her as him nephew. She fell in love with Algernon who claimed to be Ernest, Jacks brother. She has a diary to write all the stories and dreams. She obsessed with a man named Ernest. Based on the main part and roles of this story : She plays a minor character. She appear in middle story as a Jacks nephew. She love Jack as her uncle. She just know that Jack has brother, called Ernest. When Ernest (Algernon) came to village she fall in love with him.

Based on the personal traits of this story : She plays a flat character in this story. She an innocent girl who is easy to believe that Algernon is Ernest, Jacks brother. Although she knew that Algernon was lying, she forgave him. Based on the possibility to change : She plays static character. She has an obsession to marry a man named Ernest, because she really liked that name. But finally she knew Algernon was not Ernest, but she still loves him. E. THEME The theme of this story is Lie will cause problems for yourself and others Lies that made Jack change his name to Ernest in town has hurt himself, because Gwendolen really like the name of Ernest, is very difficult for Jack to tell the truth that his name is Jack, as well as Algernon, he already lied that he is Jack's brother named Ernest, when he fell in love with Cecily, he should lie because Cecily liked the name of Ernest. If only they were honest from the beginning, the problem would not arise, and there is no misunderstanding between Gwendolen and Cecily who thought they have same lover, its Ernest.

F. ACTION Actions of the players have been very clear in scripts story. How they action to start and end of the story, how they enter and exit in each story. In the dialog has been able to describe the emotions of each character.

G. SETTING The story is happened at Algernons flat in Half-Moon Street, when Algernoon played piano. But story the most happened at the Manor House, Woolton, and North of London. The time of this story is in the present time. The function of setting as a background. It is only describe the place and time of this story, where and when the story happen in order the reader able to imagine the story.

CHAPTER III CONCLUSION

Story by Oscar Wilde is very interesting because we can learn about lies that made Jack and Algernon would make matters even more difficult to overcome them, because they have lied to the woman they love Gwendolen and Cecily. Honesty is better than lies. Because no one wants to be lied to for any reason.
