Knights Defense Shuts Down Pirates

STANWOOD The North Cedar football teams defense has played very well before last Fridays home game with Alburnett, but last Fridays effort is the Knights best effort yet. The North Cedar defense helped in a big way in the Knights district 5 opening 36-8 win over previously unbeaten Alburnett. The Knights held the Pirates to nearly 100-yards less in total offense than their season average to date in the game. The Knights also created a lot of pressure on the Pirates senior quarterback Alec Phillip. There, North Cedar had four sacks, three interceptions and forced Phillip to complete only 16-of-29 pass attempts in the game. I thought that we created takeaways in the game, said North Cedar coach Charlie Feller. Our defense was physical up front and got to the quarterback early and often. Our coaches got them ready and our pass coverage was phenomenal as well, he said. Defensively, North Cedar was led by Hunter Smith with a team high 17 tackles. Derrick Gray and Andrew Fields each had 11 tackles to give North Cedar three players with more than 10 tackles in the game. Seth Hamilton, Blake Proesch and Hunter Smith each had an interception in the game and Adam Poduska had two sacks while Bryce Sharpless and Dylan Deerberg each had one sack. North Cedar scored points on their first four possessions of the football game. After stopping Alburnetts first drive the Knights scored on their first possession with 7:16 to go in the opening quarter. North Cedar churned out a eight-play drive that ended when quarterback Jayden Johnson connected with receiver Blake Proesch for a 5-yard touchdown pass. Though the PAT was no good, North Cedar held the lead, one they would not give up the rest of the game. Alburnetts next possession came to a halt when Proesch intercepted a pass, setting the Knights up at the Pirates 29-yard line. North Cedar drove the the two-yard line, but could not cross the goal line. The Knights did score however, as Oliver Skov-Thuesen drilled a 20-yard field goal to give North Cedar a 9-0 lead. The Knights first two possessions of the second quarter produced touchdowns. First, a 31-yard Johnson to Derrick Gray touchdown pass early in the quarter and a Gray three-yard touchdown with 5:06 left before halftime to give North Cedar a 22-0 lead which they would take into the halftime break. Alburnett dented the scoreboard with 3:56 left in the third quarter after an Alec Phillip pass to Kolton Rose resulted in an 18-yard touchdown pass. The duo hooked up for the two-point conversion to put the score at 22-8. North Cedar would not let the Pirates get closer, scoring early in the fourth quarter on Jayden Johnsons third touchdown pass of the football game. This one, an 18-yard strike to Gray. Later, after North Cedar had intercepted a Pirate pass in the endzone, Jayden Johnson connected with Jacob Hay for a 74-yard long touchdown pass to put the score at 36-8. North Cedar had 347 yards of total offense. Our running game could have been more physical, but I was pleased with our pass blocking. We felt that they were a good ball club and we gave them our full attention. We stayed the course, and kept our focus and played North Cedar football, said Feller. Jayden Johnson passed for 217 yards with 4 touchdowns and only one interception. He also rushed for 49 yards on 11 carries. Derrick Gray rushed for 58 yards on 18 carries and scored one touchdown. Gray caught six passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Jacob Hay had a team high in receptions with Gray, six, for 113 yards

and one touchdown. Alburnett senior quarterback Alec Phillip passed for 181 yards on 16 completions with 1 touchdown and three interceptions. Dylan Winfield had a team high 60 rushing yards on 11 carries and Kolton Rose caught seven passes for 85 yards and a touchdown. Connor Shulista had a team high 14 tackles for Alburnett. North Cedar will host Durant this Friday as the Knights look to improve to 4-0 on the season. Durant comes into the football game with a decieving 0-3 record after playing well at times. The Wildcats can move the football with quarterbacks Alex Rouse and Will Bentley along with skill guys, running backs Wyatt Helmle and Henry Hansen and receiver Alik Lorenz. Durant has lost its first three games to LouisaMuscatine, West Branch and Tipton. Feller, who is in his first go around in district play said that the time has flown by. It (time) has flown by. You try to enjoy it and you hope that all goes well for it. You are garunteed nine games and it is crazy how fast its gone and how fast its going. This district is very, very good and every game matters here. We want to compete out there each week, he said.

Tipton 6th Grade Team Takes 3rd At Great-4 State Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, MN A group of Tipton 6th grade girls represented Tipton and the state of Iowa at the Minnesota Great 4-State Basketball Championships. The team compiled a perfect 27-0 record prior to making the trip to Minnesota. There, the team advanced to the semifinals before losing to the eventual champion, Brandon Valley, South Dakota. The team had to qualify at a Regional tournament in Cedar Falls where they beat West Fork (33-11), Waterloo East (38-18) and Central Decatur (22-19). In Minnesota, Tipton won their first game over Kasson-Mantorville (MN) 28-20 to reach the semifinals. There, the Tipton team lost their first game of the season, a 25-19 loss to Brandon Valley. In the third place game, Tipton beat Pierre (SD) 39-28. The team got to play at the Target Center which is the home of the Minnesota Timberwolves of the NBA and the Minnesota Lynx of the WNBA. They got to play one game on the main floor that the professional players play on and there was an atmosphere similar to a big time game with lineups being announced and an in-game announcer. The team was coached by Garry OLeary and Stephanie Wiese. We had a goal when we went to Minneapolis and it was to represent our team and our community to the best of our ability, said OLeary. Our girls were certainly disappointed with their first loss of the season (in the semifinals), but, they came back and beat the defending 4-State Champions in the third place game, he said. OLeary said that the parent support for the team was unmatched representing themselves with class all the way. It has truly been a very special time for me to get to coach these kids, said OLeary. I cant thank their parents enough for their trust and support, he said. The team has been playing together since 4th grade and have really developed into a sound fundamentally solid team for their age group. We believed that if you are fundamentally better than your competition, you have a chance to win and we stuck to that philosophy for the past three seasons, he said. This team will now move into the Jr. High program at the Tipton Middle School in 7th grade. OLeary said that it is possible that as early as this year that the team may regroup and play in tournaments after their season is over. OLeary also pointed to the newly formed youth programs for grades 4-6 called the Tipton Tiger Youth Basketball Program that is open to all girls in these grades. The program will stress fundamentals and team play.
