One of the text messages partly reads please be advised that site will be closed on Friday and Saturday for all MPS-JV hourly paid employees and sub-contractors. This act is to safe guard our people and our assets. This after striking workers burnt down some offices, damaged cranes and some water pipes which has resulted in leakages. Numsa spokesperson Bongani Lebone says the contractors must stop dismissing the locals. Another strike action looms at Medupi power station

Construction at Eskom s multi-billion rand Medupi power station at Lephalale in Limpopo has been halted. This follows violent protest by workers, mostly locals who are aggrieved that their contracts are being terminated at the expense of those who live outside the area. The under construction power station employs about 18 000 labourers. Workers have burnt down some offices and damaged equipment. The Medupi construction site - which is usually a hive of activity by the nature of construction taking place - had been deserted by Friday morning. The cranes were hovering the skies adjacent to the towers without being manned. No buses were entering or leaving the construction sites. It was only a handful of vehicles that were in the area. Workers have been sent text messages instructing them not to go to work following a violent protest.

We have serious concerns on the development of Lephalale itself under auspices of Eskom that theres nothing thats here for the local people instead theyre first to be demobilized when the termination of contract comes the site is closed and were being informed that eh were on standby until further notice by the all the contractors, says Lebone. The aggrieved workers supported by some members of Numsa - have now formed their own structure - Workers Forum. They say that they no longer recognize their full time shop stewards - arguing that they dont serve the interests of the workers. They also demand the withdrawal of project labour agreement a document governing employee/employer - saying it perpetuates workers problems. Another strike action looms at Medupi power station. Trade unionist Lebone says that Numsa has served Eskom and the contractors with a notice for a strike.

So currently we have officially withdrawn from this apartheid drawn document called PLA and we tend to engage on legal strike to make Eskom accountable and answer on those grievances that have been forwarded and then each an every employer and contractor and even Eskom have been informed officially on the 28th from the Numsa position the date of the strike will be announced. Work stoppages have affected the completion period of the power station which started more than five years ago. Its completion period was postponed from 2012.
