Kevin Ceccon had a big scare at the start of Race 1, but thanks to high safety standards, the Italian was unscathed.

Aint no mountain high enough

When youre a true fan, you support your hero no matter what! Thats why forty-five Swedes took a bus for a twenty-hour long journey to head to the Nrburgring and show their support to their chosen one: Marcus Ericsson. They met with their favourite racing driver who stopped by their hotel for some pictures and a long Q&A session. They were able to follow the action from one of the grandstands deploying a huge banner of the Swedish flag. We hope to get it on TV, said Fan Club President Bowe Bevonius. We cheer lots every time we see Marcus car! We made special polo shirts for the event with the Swedish flag, the name and date of the event. Were all very proud to be wearing them! Marcus rewarded them with a race win and they could hear their national anthem making it worth their while. But Marcus was not the only one to be lucky to have fans to cheer him on: Mitch Evans had a tour group come all the way from New Zealand to see him at Nrburgring, including his biggest sponsor Sir Colin Giltrap Talk about dedication!

Stefano Coletti started P13 on Saturday and fought tooth and nail until the final corner with three other rivals to take third, one tenth ahead of Fabio Leimer.

Second in the Feature Race, second again in the Sprint Race, last years best rookie scored a total of 32 points in Germany (with two bonus points for fastest lap on Sunday) and closes in on the top 3. The Brit hopes his challenging first half of the season is well behind him.

No rest for the wicked

Back-to-back race weekends are a logistical challenge, explained Racing Engineerings Sporting Director Thomas Couyotopoulo. There is a rule in GP2 that states that you cannot dismount the awning until the start of the F1 race, but since we had to travel directly from Silverstone to the Nrburgring instead of going back to the workshop, we chose to work on our cars in England until Monday morning, and then we packed everything up. Everyone gives us a hand, from the truckie, to the mechanics and the engineers. The truck left Monday at noon and was in Germany by Tuesday. When the race weekends are so close together, you also have to rush to get the drivers overalls and the team kit cleaned. Its no small job: thats a lot of laundry! You also need to find a paint shop for the spare parts you may need to change on your cars. You have to put pressure on the local people to have things done on time for scrutineering. Its a challenge! Then, since you cant start setting up the awning until the Wednesday, Tuesday is a bit calmer, but the engineers meet with myself at the hotel and we do a debrief and analyse the previous event. The mechanics are relaxing a little after an intense week (there is a lot of things to see at the Nordschleife), but they also look at the mileage of the parts and make sure everything is ready for the weekend. As for the drivers, back-to-back races are intense! They have very little time to relax and reset their mind in between events, but its part of the preparation and they need to deliver as soon as free practice begins. Normally, they train every day, but after a race weekend, its good to have a day off and just not eat too much in order to not have a surprise on the scale. Its not easy mentally. Maybe its easier if youve had a good weekend in Silverstone, but they have less time to disconnect and come with a fresh mind. But I would say its also part of their preparation for F1. They will have very intense months in Formula One too in the future and they have to be ready for it!

Yes, finally! After two previous pole positions that were followed by two disappointing races, the Swede transformed a front row start in Germany into a first win of the season for reigning champions DAMS.

Marcus Ericsson and DAMS

The Swiss had looked so strong in the first two rounds of the season scoring two consecutive feature race wins. And then bad luck plagued Leimer again, but he eventually found his way back to the podium last Sunday and keeps his title hopes alive.

Fabio Leimer

The British squad which lead the teams standings have struggled in Germany with only ten points scored just like in Silverstone a week earlier. Will Budapest see their first win of the season?

RUSSIAN TIME to the rescue!

Since their first track appearance, newcomers RUSSIAN TIME has surprised us by changing their livery at every event. They started with a plain blue car displaying a big Russian flag on the side. Then, in Bahrain, they introduced Bird and Dillmanns names in Cyrillic script. In Barcelona, the drawing of a little bird on a podium celebrated Sams first win. For Monaco, the livery sported a promotional message for the Olympic Games of Sochi in 2014. In Silverstone, the Halow Project, a Surrey Charity supporting young people with a learning disability to lead more independent, fulfilling lives, had their logo added to the cars livery. Last week, the message Save the Ring and a green layout of the Nordschleife decorated both machines: We wanted to maximise awareness of Nrburgrings situation, said team manager Timo Rumpfkeil. It is a surprise for the local people here who try to ensure the future of this track. We believe it deserves to be kept for at least the next hundred years! Team Principal Igor Mazepa added: We want to tell a story with our liveries. We try and choose important causes that are close to our hearts and translate it into a new design for each event. We dont know what it will be in Budapest yet!

NRBURGRING 2009

A perfect weekend
Nico Hlkenberg set up his championship credentials after running a perfect weekend (pole, 2 wins, 2 fastest laps) at his home race at the Nrburgring in 2009, the first time anyone had done so since Nelson Piquet at the Hungaroring three seasons earlier. Vitaly Petrov edged the German into P2 in a cold and windy free practice session, but it was the last time all weekend that any of his rivals had an answer for his incredible pace.

Grosjean on the podium in Germany

Romain Grosjean looked surprisingly disappointed as he stood on the podium to receive his trophy for third place at the Nrburgring, although its probably understandable if you look a little deeper at the Frenchmans weekend: on the pace of teammate Rikknen all weekend, he made much better use of his first set of softs to hand himself a possibility of a win before the safety car, then pushed Vettel for most of the race before having to hand over P2 to his teammate in the closing stages of the race. Nevertheless, he should be proud of his strong performance, and look to repeat it in the second half of the season. He would certainly be happier than the Mercedes pair of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, who had a torrid weekend after a strong few races. The Briton pulled off a remarkable pole position, much to the chagrin of his teammate who was out in Q2 due to a bad call by the team and would have been looking to fight for top honours, but when the lights went out Hamilton dropped behind eventual winner Vettel and Webber and struggled with tyres to finish 5th, while Rosberg had the same problems but started in the pack, at least finishing in the points for 9th. Sergio Prez was another driver struggling in the German heat: he was unable to get on top of his car in qualifying, lining up in P13 as a result, but did a solid job on a two stop strategy to come home 8th. He stood in contrast to Nico Hlkenberg, who found a way back into Q3 for P10 before having the fight of his life against a variety of midfielders in the race, but got by di Resta on the penultimate lap for the final point of the race. Against this, teammate Esteban Gutirrez struggled to match his more experienced teammate, starting P14 and finishing P13 in what he will see as another learning opportunity. A fuel pump problem saw Pastor Maldonado line up in P18 in Williams 600th grand prix, one spot behind teammate Valtteri Bottas, but a great drive in the race saw the Venezuelan fighting for a points finish before a tyre change problem on his last stop saw him drop back to P15 at the finish, one spot ahead of his teammate, who suffered the same problem in the pits. Charles Pic came out on top in the Caterham / Marussia qualifying battle before a replacement gearbox pushed the Frenchman to the back of the grid. A slow puncture saw him stop out of sequence, but a strong fightback saw him beat his rivals to finish P17, one spot ahead of teammate Giedo van der Garde, while Jules Bianchi suffered a spectacular engine failure for a DNF, and Max Chilton struggled on his tyres late on to finish P19.

Hlkenberg led the way in qualifying, claiming the top spot with five minutes remaining in the session: the German was slightly lucky when Luca Filippi spun at the final chicane immediately after the time was set, but the Super Nova car was removed with two minutes left and no one else was able to string a lap together to steal pole.

The German was utterly dominant in the feature race, controlling the pace throughout and setting a string of fastest laps to claim victory by 14 seconds over Roldn Rodrguez and Andreas Zuber to put himself within a point of Romain Grosjeans championship haul. The sprint race saw an even more dominant display from Hlkenberg: the German made short work of blasting past his rivals when the lights went out, moving up from P8 to second behind the equally fast starting Petrov, who was a couple of seconds ahead by the time the German moved up to P2, a gap that started to shrink rapidly. Petrovs advantage was quickly removed entirely: the Russian hit Lucas di Grassi at the start, and a drive through for the incident meant Hlkenberg didnt have a chance to overtake for the lead. As if to make up for this slight the German set a string of qualifying laps to highlight his natural advantage over his rivals, crossed the finish line a whopping 26seconds ahead of lvaro Parente and Kamui Kobayashi and picking up a four point lead over Grosjean in the title race as he did so.

Finding grip AT THE NRBURGRING

Like most circuits, the Nrburgring in Germany is frequently green when the GP2 teams arrive, especially during free practice on Friday. This year was no exception. But as the weekend goes on, the track gets more rubber put onto it and consequently it becomes faster. The roughness of the asphalt and the action of the rubber gripping the track leads to abrasion of the tyre against the surface. Parts of the rubber then stick to the track between the stones of the asphalt. This is known as the circuit rubbering in. Other parts of the tyre instead form small strips of rubber when they come off. These are known as marbles. They weigh just a few grams, and tend to accumulate on the outside of corners, or off the racing line in braking areas. Tyres that wear quicker deposit more rubber on the surface, both in terms of marbles and the track rubbering in. In the case of GP2 at the Nrburgring, this was the supersoft tyre: an ultra-quick compound that was especially useful for qualifying. A number of drivers also managed to incorporate it into their race strategies. The more rubber on the surface, the more grip. This allows faster lap times, but also limits wear and degradation on the tyres. That is also why the data captured during free practice on Friday often has to be revised and updated as the weekend goes on. The latest data allows a more accurate prediction of race performance. People talk about track evolution a lot, but it is really an important factor at every level, points out Pirellis racing manager Mario Isola. One of the most critical phases of the weekend for this is qualifying. In general terms, drivers will choose to leave their qualifying runs as late as possible in order to benefit from the best track conditions with the most rubber on the surface. However, if you leave it too late then you can get caught out and this is something that we see in Formula One as well as GP2. Its yet another way that GP2 helps prepare drivers for the future, where good knowledge of tyre behaviour and strategy is always useful.

Whats UP! Ice-Ice Baby

We had a very special guest in the GP3 paddock during the Nrburgring weekend when 2007 F1 World Champion Kimi Rikknen paid a visit to Series newcomers and fellow countrymen, Koiranen GP. Team Manager Afa Heikkinen has enjoyed a long friendship with the current Lotus GP F1 driver after giving him his first opportunity in racing back in 1998. The two Finns have remained in close contact ever since and travelled together to this Round. Afa commented, Kimi has been following our progress this season and always watches qualifying and the races. He is very enthusiastic about the Series, in particular the new GP3/13 car! Rikknen wasnt the only F1 driver keen to follow the GP3 action, Double F1 World Champion, Fernando Alonso, was on the pit-wall eagerly watching GP3 Race 1, as he chatted with GP3 SeriesCEOBrunoMichel.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

The Argentine had a perfect Saturday, his first pole position, dominant maiden Race 1 win and fastest lap to move into P2 in the Drivers Standings. It wasnt to be on Sunday when a technical issue on the grid meant the ART Grand Prix ace had to start from the pitlane and then retired.

Calado on the comeback trail

Former GP3 winner James Calado had a positive weekend in Nrburgring, finishing second in both races and pocketing 32points which has moved him into fifth in the Drivers Standings. The Brit will be looking to move up the order and repeat his GP2 form from last season. Series leader Stefano Coletti drove what he described as his best ever race in the Feature when he qualified 13th but carved through the field to produce a stunning rostrum finish in third. Race2 was not successful for the Monegasque driver scoring no points but he holds a 27 point lead in the Series. 2012 GP3 Series Champion Mitch Evans made a great start in Saturdays Race to hold P1 for a few seconds but ran too wide and dropped outside of the top ten, with a pit-stop issue preventing his chances of points in a brilliant comeback drive. The Kiwi collected two points in the Sprint the next day. GP3s inaugural champion Esteban Gutirrez equalled his best qualifying for Sauber in F1 with 14th and finished in the same position for the race. Valtteri Bottas for Williams F1 had a difficult weekend, not making it into Q2 and coming home in 16th.

Another good points haul for Nick Yelloly saw the team pocket 20points, but Saturdays race saw rookie Luis Sa Silva take out his teammate Eric Lichtenstein and thus penalised with a grid penalty on Sunday.

CARLIN

The newcomers made a super start to their GP3 campaign but it wasnt to be in Nrburgring with the team scoring no points. The Finnish outfit will surely bounce back in Budapest.

Haryanto storms to stunning win.

Haryanto reigns at the Ring!

When race engineers look for advice on what to do in a wet/dry race, the 2011 feature event at the Nrburgring is one of the best races they could consider. With the threat of rain hanging heavily over the German circuit as the drivers came to the grid, front row men Mitch Evans and Antonio Flix da Costa took a gamble and switched to wets before the installation lap. The Portuguese driver dropped like a rock when the lights went out, but the Kiwi poleman held on from P3 man Rio Haryanto and a fast charging Lewis Williamson from P8 and Valtteri Bottas from P11: his problem was compounded when da Costa was handed a ten second

stop/go for not having all four wheels fitted at the three minute warning siren, a penalty which would also soon see Evans lose his tenuous lead in the race to Williamson, who had just mugged the Indonesian driver for his position. The rain finally fell with five laps remaining, with all bar the top three diving into the pits for wets: Williamson, Haryanto and Bottas had an epic battle with the conditions and each other, changing positions multiple times each lap before Haryanto finally claimed the top spot late on the last lap for the win, before showing exactly how tricky the conditions were by running off track on the way back to the pits!
