Market Synopsis Indices close flat The benchmark indices ended flat today with Nifty closing below its crucial 5900-level as trade was choppy ahead of the expiry of September futures contract on Thursday. Sentiment was subdued due to lack of any positive triggers on the domestic and global front. Nifty ended at 5892.45, up 2.70 points from Monday's close. The index charted a low of 5854.55 and high of 5938.40 during the day. The S&P BSE Sensex closed at 19920.21, up 19.25 points or 0.1%, off its intraday low of 19782.78. The intraday high for the 30-share index was 20050.42. Select bank shares ended lower following rating downgrade by Moody's Investors Service and Fitch Ratings. In the metals and mining pack, Hindalco Industries and Sesa Goa ended down 3.9% and 1.0%, respectively, on profit booking while shares of automobile, capital goods and power companies gained. Buzzing Stocks United Spirits touched a high of 2,525 after Chairman Vijay Mallya said company's board may consider a stock-split. But the stock ended 0.1% lower at 2,485.30. NTPC shares ended 1.9% higher at 145.45 as the government settled company's 5.36-bln-rupee hydro project claim. Hindustan Motors surged 7.6% to end at 8.50 as company's managing director said company's demerger process is likely to be completed in two-three months. Shares of BSE-listed SpiceJet ended up 1.1% at 21.95 on report Singapore's carrier Tigerair is in talks with private equity funds for supporting its bid for a stake in the company. In the infrastructure space, Hindustan Construction Co and Patel Engineering rose 2.5% and 3% respectively intraday as they were shortlisted by National Highways Authority of India for its 10.27bln-rupee road project in Bihar. However, HCC ended up just 0.5% at 10.10 and Patel engineering ended flat at 35.55. Bharti Airtel ended down 1.4% at 330.30 as company cut its hiring budget for 2013-14 (Apr-Mar).
