What is a plumber’s apprentice? Minnesota Statutes § 326.01, subd. 9, defines an apprentice as:

A “plumber’s apprentice” is any person, other than a journeyman or master plumber, who, as a principal occupation, is engaged
in working as an employee of a plumbing contractor under the immediate and personal supervision of either a master or
journeyman plumber or plumbing contractor in learning and assisting in the installation of plumbing.

An apprentice in Minnesota must either register with the Construction Codes and Licensing Division or the Apprenticeship
Training Program with the Department of Labor and Industry, in the voluntary apprentice registration program. The requirements
covered in this guide are for apprentices who register with the Construction Codes and Licensing Division. Requirements are
contained in the Minnesota Plumbing Code, Minn. Rules, part 4715.3170.

Initial Apprentice Plumber Registration

A new apprentice must submit the Initial Apprentice Plumber Registration form and receive a registration card prior to engaging
in on-site plumbing work. Call the Department of Labor and Industry at (651) 284-5067 to obtain a copy of the most current
registration forms.

The fee for an initial apprentice plumber registration is $25. Additional fees would apply if the application is late or credit is being
sought for previous plumbing-related schooling or out-of-state work experience. Checks returned for nonpayment will be
charged a $30 fee (M.S. § 604.113, subd. 2)

Apprentice Plumber Renewal

It is the responsibility of the apprentice, not the contractor, to ensure that the apprentice registration is renewed annually. A new
apprenticeship card will be issued each year upon receipt of the completed renewal form and fee. Failure to renew can result
in loss of credit for hours worked.

The annual registration period for a plumber’s apprentice is from July 1 to June 30 of the following year. An apprentice must
renew their registration prior to July 1 of each year. The department will mail renewals to currently registered apprentices.

The fee for an annual apprentice plumber renewal registration is $25. If the application is submitted after July 1, a penalty fee of
$25 must also be paid. Checks returned for nonpayment will be charged a $30 fee (M.S. § 604.113, subd. 2)
