Liu Shiwen of China clinched Womens Table Tennis World Cup 2013
Chinese table tennis player Liu Shiwen clinched Womens Table TennisWorld Cup 2013 after beating teammate Wu Yang in the final play of the tournament held in Kobe, Japan. Liu had won the World Cup in Guangzhou in 2009 and in Huangshi one year back. It was her third world cup victory.

Indian Team reserves berth Wrestling World Cup for the first time

With India finishing 6th in the mens freestyle at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, it also reserved its maiden Wrestling World Cup berth. India qualified for the big event by finishing sixth behind Iran,Russia, Georgia, Ukraine and the USA. As per FILA norms, the top 8 teams in the World Championship automatically qualify for the World Cup.

Mohameddan Sporting Club wins Durand Cup after 73 years

After a long gap of 73 years, Mohammedan Sporting Club (MSC) of Kolkata won the Durand Cup football tournament. The club vanquished ONGC 2-1 in the 126th edition of the tournament played at the Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi. It was in 1940 when MSC last lifted the Durand Cup when they won the tournament defeating Warwickshire Regiment.
The Durand Cup:

The inaugural Durand Football Tournament was held at Simla in the year 1888 by Sir Henry Mortimer Durand, who was then, the Foreign Secretary to Government of India. Durand is the third oldest football tournament in the world and oldest in Asia and India.

Thomas Bach is new President of International Olympic Committee

Thomas Bach (59) from Germany has been elected as the President of the InternationalOlympic Committee (IOC). He is the first Olympic gold medallist to become the President of the IOC. He will succeed Jacques Rogge, who stepped down after 12 years in service.

Serena Williams wins US Open 2013

World no.1 Serena Williams conquered her fifth US Open title by defeating second ranked Victoria Azarenka to clinch her 17th career Grand Slam crown. Serena became the oldest Open Era womens winner in US Open history, 293 days older than Margaret Court when she set the prior mark in 1973, and the third-oldest Grand Slam womens champion of the Open Era. Paes-Stepanek clinch US Open mens doubles title

The pair of Indias Leander Paes and Czechs Radek Stepanek clinched US Open mens doubles title as they vanquished Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares in the final held in New York. For Paes, it is his eighth mens doubles Grand Slam title. Leander Paes won his eighth mens doubles Grand Slam title, and overall this was his 14th.

Tokyo bags 2020 Olympic hosting right

The 2020 Olympic Games will be hosted by Tokyo as it has won the right to host the games, beating Istanbul in the second round of voting in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This makes Tokyo to be the first Asian city to host the Olympics twice, having also hosted the 1964 Games. Note: Olympics 2016 will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt won his second gold medal of the World Athletic Championships being held in Moscow, Russia,cruising through the finish line to win the mens 200 meters. The 100-meter champion won the race in 19.66 seconds for his third straight world title in the 200. Warren Weir of Jamaica was second in 19.79 and Curtis Mitchell of the United States took bronze in 20.04. In Marathon, Olympic champion Stephen Kiprotich of Uganda beat two Ethiopian rivals in the final two kilometres to win the world championship marathon.

Rafael Nadal wins mens singles title in Rogers Cup 2013

Rafael Nadal of Spain defeated CanadasMilos Raonic in the final of the mens Rogers Cup 2013 in Montreal, Canada. This is the Nadals third Rogers Cup title. He also won Rogers cup in 2005 and 2008. This triumph brought Rafael Nadal his 25th ATP World Tour Masters title. As per the latest ATP world rankings Rafael Nadal moves to third rank and Milos Raonic rose to tenth rank and also became the first Canadian to be ranked in the top 10 on the ATP Tour. Shree Ganeshan Chundan wins Nehru Trophy Boat Race 2013

Shree Ganeshan Chundan, the snake boat of the St Francis Boat Club, Harippad won the 61st edition of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race 2013 held in Punnamada Lake in Alleppey (Alappuzha), SouthKerala. This is the second consecutive win for Shree Ganeshan that was captained by Arunkumar, Karthikapally. Ganeshan was honoured with the silver trophy that was donated by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1952 with his signature embossed on it.

About the Nehru Trophy Boat Race:

The practice of the boat race started in 1952 after the first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru visited the area in Kerela. The villagers held a boat race to honour his visit in the area. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is conducted every year on the second Saturday of August. Nehru donated a silver trophy to the winners of the race and since then the competition is held by his name. The main attraction of the contest remains the snake boats, which are locally known as Chundan Vallam, which means Beaked Boat. Snake boats have been named following its structure that is long and narrow in shape and 36 to 42 meter in its length.

Usain Bolt regains 100-meter gold at worlds

Six-time Olympic gold medalist, Usain Bolt, regained World 100 meter title as he won the race in 9.77 seconds at the IAAF World Athletics Championships held in Moscow. Bolt finished ahead of Justin Gatlin of the U.S. (9.85) and Jamaican Nesta Carter (9.95). Bolt had previously won the event at the World championships in Berlin in 2009 where he set the current world record of 9.58 seconds.

Olympic decathlon champion Ashton Eaton of the U.S. won gold in the event. Olympic winner Brittney Reese of the U.S. won the womens long jump for the third consecutive time with a leap of 7.01 meters. Christopher Froome has became the second successive Briton to win the race after teammate and compatriot Bradley Wiggins Froome who made history as Britains first winner in 2012, when Froome finished runner-up.

Shane Warnes Achievements: He represented Australia in 145 tests between 1992 and 2007. He took 708 test wickets at an average of 25.41. Shane Warne also took 293 wickets in 194 one-day internationals at an average of 25.73 He was in the playing Australian side that beat Pakistan in the 1999 World Cup final at Lords and was named man-of-the-match. Deepika Kumaris gold and bronze medal performances on the concluding day helped India finished fourth in the Archery World Cup Stage 3 in Medellin, Colombia. She came into limelight after clinching the 1993 Roland Garros junior title at just 12 year of age. Won three Australian Open titles (1997, 1998, 1999), one Wimbledon (1997) and a US Open title (1997). Stood at the number one ranking for 209 weeks. She also won nine grand slam doubles titles and a mixed doubles title. In 1997, Hingis became the undisputed World No. 1 womens tennis player. Russia to send Olympic torch to space

Russia who will be hosting 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi has announced to send an unlit Olympic torch into space. The Russian Federal Space Agency will take the torch to the Soyuz TMA-11M manned spaceship in early November 2013 as part of the four-month torch relay. Once it reaches space, Russian cosmonauts Sergei Ryazansky and Oleg Kotov will take the Olympic torch on a spacewalk. It will be first event of its kind.

India to host 2016 World T20 and 2023 ODI World Cup

As per the announcement made by the International Cricket Council (ICC), India will host the World T20 in 2016 and the 50-over World Cup in 2023. The Champions Trophy, the last edition of which was won by India recently has been replaced with World Test Championship,the first edition of which will be held in England and Wales in June-July 2017. India will host its 2nd edition in February-March 2021. ICC agreed on the following: Full members of the ICC will play a minimum of 16 tests over a four-year period. In order to ensure that all ODIs player over the four-year cycle b/w World Cups count towards a teams ranking, the ODIs ranking period will be changed from three years to four years. In order to bring consistency, the calculations of the T20 ranking will be changed to cover the same period. The date of the annual ICC Rankings update will be changed to May 1 rather than August 1.

Ammu: Mascot for 35th National Games The official mascot of the 35th National Games has been named Ammu which is a hornbill. The games will be hosted by Kerala in November-December 2013. India defeated Egland by 5 runs, giving their skipper M S Dhoni, the unique record of being the first captain to win three world titles. Awards: The Man of the Match and the Golden Ball Award: Given to Indian allrounder Ravindra Jadeja for picking the most number of wickets, 12, in the tournament. The Golden Bat: Shikhar Dhawan, Indias left-handed batsman won this award for scoring the most runs in the tournament, 363 runs from five matches at an average of 90.75.

World footballs governing body FIFA has announced that goal-line technology will be used during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Why is Goal-line technology? A method to determine whether the Football has completely crossed the goal line or not. This is done using electronic devices. This technology will assist the referee in taking the final decision that whether it was a goal or not. On 5 July 2012, IFAB officially approved the use of goal line technology. FIFA has already approved two systems Hawk Eye and GoalRef. The Hawk Eye system, used in cricket and tennis, involves the strategic placing of cameras from different points within the stadium while GoalRef uses an electronic chip inside the ball.
