- JANUARY Contraband Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Kate Beckinsale, Ben Foster, Giovanni Ribisi, Caleb Landry Jones Director: Baltasar Kormkur Out: 13th January 2012

After his brother-in-law botches a drug deal for a ruthless gangster (Ribisi), Chris (Wahlberg) is forced back into running contraband to settle the debt. A legendary New Orleans smuggler, he quickly assembles a crew with the help of his best friend (Foster), and heads to Panama to return with millions in counterfeit bills. Soon he must navigate a treacherous criminal network of brutal drug lords, cops and hit men to avoid his wife (Beckinsale) and sons becoming their targets. Its a bland story, but the trailer suggested a decent sense of tension and urgency. This is the same plot as Gone In 60 Seconds, without the cars, only this time the screwed up brother is playing the mob boss odd. [Critics (via Rotten Tomatoes): 51%] [Public (via IMDB): 6.4] Decent Red Tails Starring: Nate Parker, Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard, Bryan Cranston Director: Anthony Hemingway Out: 20th January 2012

The african-american pilots of Tuskegee have mastered the skies with ease but have not been granted the opportunity to truly spread their wings during World War II, mistakenly deemed inferior and assigned only second-rate planes and missions. Until now. Given a mission so

dangerous that all others have refused it, he pilots join the fiery aerial fray with something to prove and everything to lose. This is coming from LucasFilm, so you can expect great fx in the aerial battles but wooden acting and clunky plotting the rest of the time. [Critics: 39%] [Public: 5.8] Mediocre Safe House Starring: Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Brendan Gleeson, Sam Shepard Director: Daniel Espinosa Out: 10th February 2012

A dangerous renegade from the CIA (Washington) comes back onto the grid after a decade on the run. When the South African safe house hes remanded to is attacked by mercenaries, a rookie operative (Reynolds) escapes with him. Now, the unlikely allies must stay alive long enough to uncover who wants them dead. They want it to look like Training Day, it does Washington is walking that line where you dont know if hes a villain or not, and Reynolds is doing the Ethan Hawke role. This looks decent enough, and the South African setting should give it a bit of personality. [Critics: 53%] [Public: 6.8] Decent Act Of Valor Starring: Alex Veadov, Rosalyn Sanchez, Nestor Serrano, Emilio Rivera, and U.S. Navy SEALs Directors: Mike McCoy, Scott Waugh Out: 24th February 2012

A Navy SEAL squad goes on a covert operation to rescue a kidnapped CIA Officer, while also taking down terrorists who aim to strike America. Most of the people in the movie are real-life active duty Navy SEALs, and the action is intended to be as authentic as possible to actual military operations. This actually began life as a recruitment video for the U.S. military, so expect a black and white view of the world, lots of back-slapping hoo-hahs, and probably basiclevel dialogue and character-work. Still it is an original idea using real operators and military cooperation on this scale, and it should be interesting to see how the experiment turns out. It does look like a live-action Call Of Duty. [Critics: 25%] [Public: 6.4] Mixed Reaction This Means War Starring: Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, Reese Witherspoon, Til Schweiger Director: McG Out: 17th February 2012

Action-romance about two spies, and lifelong best friends, who fall in love with the same woman (Witherspoon) and wage an epic city-wrecking battle against each other to win her. The unfairly maligned McG (Charlies Angels, Terminator Salvation) is directing. Tom Hardys part was originally offered to Seth Rogen, which would have presented much less of a dilemma for a

woman. Good cast, fun concept, but as with any action-romance it may satisfy both genders, or neither. [Critics: 26%] [Public: 6.3] Mixed Reaction Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance Starring: Nicolas Cage, Ciarn Hinds, Idris Elba, Johnny Whitworth, Christopher Lambert Directors: Neveldine/Taylor Out: 17th February 2012

Johnny Blaze (Cage) is in self-imposed exile in Eastern Europe, convinced that his powers are a curse. There hes approached by a monk (Elba), seeking a protector for a mother and son who are being pursued by Blackout (Whitworth) someone with a detailed knowledge of the Ghost Rider and his different identities over the centuries. The filmmakers say they are shifting this toward horror, away from the 2007 movie. Hes not really a superhero. His superpower is that he sucks out your soul. Physically Ghost Rider will be more frightening this time, including a jacket that bubbles like tar, and a mouth that spews fire. From the directors of Crank, who also scripted the dire Jonah Hex, this could go either way their shoot-from-the-hip style could either mean something fresh, or a lack of care and attention. Good to see Christopher Lambert back. [Critics: 18%] [Public: 4.4] Avoid John Carter Starring: Taylor Kitsch, Willem Dafoe, Lynn Collins, Thomas Haden Church, Mark Strong Director: Andrew Stanton Out: 9th March 2012

Civil War vet John Carter (Taylor Kitsch Gambit in Wolverine) is transplanted to Mars, where he discovers a lush, wildly diverse planet whose main inhabitants are 12-foot tall green barbarians (one of whom is played by Willem Dafoe). Finding himself a prisoner of these creatures, he escapes, only to encounter the Princess of Helium who is in desperate need of a saviour. Based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel first published in 1912, this, astonishingly, went in pre-production in 1931 and has been in and out of development hell ever since. Directed by Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, Wall-E), it all sounds slightly Avatar. The trailers havent been too impressive. [Critics: 51%] [Public: 6.7] Decent The Raid: Redemption Starring: Iko Uwais, Ananda George, Ray Sahetapy Director: Gareth Evans Out: 23rd March 2012

A SWAT team becomes trapped in a derelict apartment building run by a ruthless mobster and his army of killers and thugs, after their mission to arrest him goes awry. This is directed by a Welsh film director based in Indonesia, with an all Indonesian cast. Critics and fans at the Toronto Film Festival hailed it one of the best martial arts action films in years. The trailer has

an exciting, kinetic energy, and suggests a string of inventive kills. [Critics: 84%] [Public: 7.7] Excellent Wrath Of The Titans Starring: Sam Worthington, Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson, Danny Huston, Rosamund Pike Director: Jonathan Liebesman Out: 30th March 2012

Perseus (Worthington) embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus (Neeson), who has been targeted for capture by his traitorous son, Ares (dgar Ramrez), and his brother, Hades (Fiennes). Despite all round shoddiness, especially in the post-production 3D department, Clash of the Titans made $500 million worldwide and scored the 2nd largest April opening in history. This time, Gemma Arterton has gone, with Rosamund Pike, as warrior Queen Andromeda, taking leading lady status. Danny Huston will play Poseidon. The director gave us the terrible Battle: Los Angeles so expectations are low. [Critics: 26%] [Public: 5.8] Mediocre Lockout Starring: Guy Pearce, Maggie Grace, Peter Stormare Directors: James Mather, Stephen St. Leger Out: 13th April 2012

A man wrongly convicted of committing espionage against the U.S. is offered his freedom if he can rescue the presidents daughter from an outer space prison taken over by violent inmates. Yes, its the plot of the unproduced Escape From New York sequel Escape From Earth, borrow ed and repackaged. Guy Pearce is a great leading man and this is rated R, which is a good sign. Lockout is the first feature for the directors, co-written by Luc Besson and produced by his Europa Corp who have been responsible for good, sometimes great, action titles like District B13, Taken and The Transporter. [Critics: 37%] [Public: 6.1] Mixed Reaction Safe Starring: Jason Statham, Catherine Chan, James Hong, Reggie Lee, Robert John Burke Director: Boaz Yakin Out: 27th April 2012

A second rate cage fighter (Statham) in the mixed martial arts circuit blows a rigged fight, and has his life ruined by the Russian mafia. On the streets, on the edge of suicide, he encounters a 10 year-old Chinese math prodigy. Shes been abducted and sent to America by the Triads to help their extortion racquets by storing valuable numbers in her head. Although the plot has some interesting elements the trailer suggests a bog standard Statham movie, the young girl is no Natalie Portman, and the action is of the ten mindless goons bursting through the door to

be gunned down variety. Still Statham does still do action and line delivery like a pro. I wish he was given more top end material because he can own that too. This looks more Mercury Rising than Leon. [Critics: 57%] [Public: 6.5] Decent The Avengers Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo Director: Joss Whedon Out: 4th May 2012

Summer begins with the biggest crossover movie ever made. The all-star line-up includes Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Nick Fury, Black Widow, and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). Mark Ruffalo is replacing Ed Norton as The Hulk. Theyre all fighting Thors brother Loki and, presumably, the Skrull army he helps invade earth. Itll be fascinating to see how the lead characters are balanced and how they play off each other, it really does feel like something unique is happening. Director Joss Whedon has a daunting task on his hands. [Critics: 92%] [Public: 8.4] Excellent Battleship Starring: Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgrd, Brooklyn Decker, Rihanna, Liam Neeson Director: Peter Berg Out: 18th May 2012

A small fleet of naval ships on exercise off the Hawaiian islands finds itself pitted against an alien force intent on building a dangerous power source in the ocean. The movie will apparently show the battle from both the human and alien perspectives, which sounds ballsy. The set-up and visual style do everything they can to appear like a Michael Bay movie, hoping to catch a fraction of the Transformers crowd. Its based on the board game, but would actually be getting people more excited were it not. 1985s Clue showed that you can make a good movie based on a board game, and Pirates Of The Caribbean was based on a theme park ride, but this seems sillier because its not being played tongue in cheek. Also casting Rihanna isnt helping its credibility. At least a futuristic war movie set at sea is original and offers a spectacle not seen before. [Critics: 34%] [Public: 6.0] Mediocre Men In Black 3 Starring: Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Rip Torn, Emma Thompson Director: Barry Sonnenfeld Out: 25th May 2012

Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones return, as does director Sonnenfeld. This ones a 3D time travel plot with Agent J (Smith) having to go back to the 60s to visit, and protect, a younger Agent K (Brolin playing Jones). Emma Thompson is an agent in the modern day, a secretary

played by Alice Eve in the 60s. Jemaine Clement and Nicole Scherzinger are villains. Bill Hader is Andy Warhol. There have been numerous rumours that the production has been a bit of a mess. Lets pray its a MIB, not a MIB II. The concept is still a great one and theres no reason it cant have some wild and inventive storytelling. Cant believe it will have been 10 years since Men In Black 2. [Critics: 69%] [Public: 7.0] Very Good Snow White And The Huntsman Starring: Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Ian McShane Director: Rupert Sanders Out: 1st June 2012

This reimagining sees the Huntsman (Hemsworth) ordered to take Snow White (Stewart) into the woods to be killed, but instead winding up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen (Theron). The dwarves are a whos who of British acting talent Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, Stephen Graham, Eddie Izzard, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost and yes there are eight, which means one gets killed probably. Tonally this is a dark fantasy adventure movie. Theres another Snow White movie out in Mar ch called Mirror Mirror, which is a ghastly-looking kids version. This actually has an excellent trailer and may well surprise the doubters. Part of a planned trilogy. [Critics: 49%] [Public: 6.3] Decent The Dark Knight Rises Starring: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gary Oldman Director: Christopher Nolan Out: 20th July 2012

It was a brave move naming a Batman film The Dark Knight, since it didnt have the word Batman in it. Theres nothing bold about the title here . That aside, this is easily one of the years highlights. The plot involves the whole of Gotham descending into anarchy and mob rule, while Batman is put out of action. Tom Hardy looks imposing as Bane but his vocals seem hard to follow, Anne Hathaway plays an angry-looking Catwoman who appears to steal from the rich because she has a chip on her shoulder, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a beat cop and Marion Cotillard plays a Wayne Enterprises board member. Director Christopher Nolan has made it clear this is the final chapter for his Batman, so expect fireworks and major character death, probably.[Critics: 87%] [Public: 8.8] Excellent The Bourne Legacy Starring: Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Scott Glenn, Joan Allen Director: Tony Gilroy Out: 3rd August 2012

Matt Damons not in it. The character of Jason Bourne is not in it. Damon and previous director Greengrass were determined to end the series with the third movie, but the studio wants to continue the franchise, as it has made them too much money. This is not a sequel or a reboot, but a standalone story about another agent (Renner) trained by the murderous shadow

government operation Treadstone, who went through experiences similar to Bournes or the character played by Clive Owen in the original movie. Rachel Weisz plays the love interest. Edward Norton is the antagonist. Matt Damon is not ruling out returning to the series at a later point, so this could act as something of a set-up for that. New director Gilroy adapted the original trilogy and directed Michael Clayton, so its actually in pretty decent hands. [Critics: 56%] [Public: 6.9] Very Good Total Recall Starring: Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Bryan Cranston, Jessica Biel, Bill Nighy, Ethan Hawke Director: Len Wiseman Out: 3rd August 2012

With a story lying half way between the 1990 version and the 1966 novelette, this sees a factory worker (Farrell) begins to suspect that hes a spy, though he is unaware which side of the fight hes on (between nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai). Incredibly (unless Ive missed something) the movie does not involve Mars in any way, which for me is an enormous letdown. Its also going to be PG-13, throwing out the wonderful bloody violence of the original. Colin Farrell can lead a good remake, as shown in the entertaining Fright Night redo. Unfortunately he is poison at the box office, and since this reportedly has a massive $200 million budget, theres an even chance this might be one of the biggest money losers of the year. The director of Underworld and Live Free or Die Hard will need to step up his game in every respect. [Critics: 30%] [Public: 6.3] Mixed Reaction The Expendables 2 Starring: Stallone, Statham, Arnie, Willis, Li, Lundgren, Van Damme, Norris, Couture, Crews Director: Simon West Out: 17th August 2012

The general feeling about the first movie was that it wasnt as good as its line -up. That may change here with Stallone handing over directing duties to Simon West (Con Air, Tomb Raider). This time Schwarzenegger will do a full weeks shooting, Bruce Willis will do two weeks as the expected villain. And with the addition of Van Damme and Chuck Norris this is now the greatest action cast ever assembled. Lets hope they can do it justice with a compelling story or at least some stunning fight scenes. [Critics: 66%] [Public: 7.2] Very Good Resident Evil: Retribution Starring: Milla Jovovich, Sienna Guillory, Colin Salmon, Michelle Rodriguez, Shawn Roberts Director: Paul W.S. Anderson Out: 14th September 2012

In this fifth installment, game favourites Ada Wong, Barry Burton and Leon Kennedy all join the adventure, with the latter as the leader of a resistance group that unites with Alice (Jovovich) to fight Umbrella corporation and the undead. Chris and Claire Redfield (Wentworth Miller and Ali Larter) are not in the movie as theyve been abducted by Umbrella. However, returning characters include Jill Valentine and, oddly, Rain, Carlos and One despite all three being killed in previous movies. Im guessing cloning or flashbacks are involved. Its not like the narrative

has to make any sense at this point. Jovovich has suggested that the Las Plagas parasite from the fourth video game will also feature in the story. [Critics: 29%] [Public: 5.9] Mediocre The Man With The Iron Fists Starring: RZA, Russell Crowe, Rick Yune, Pam Grier, Lucy Liu, Forest Whitaker Director: RZA Out: 2nd November 2012

In feudal China, a blacksmith (RZA) who makes weapons for a small village is put in the position where he must defend himself and his fellow villagers. From Tarantino-collaborator and WuTang Clan supremo RZA, and produced by Eli Roth, this is an ode to kung-fu, aiming at a cool, fun vibe, along the lines of 36th Chamber of Shaolin or Five Deadly Venoms. Were promised a side to Russell Crowe we havent seen before. His character name is The Baddest Man Alive. Its his presence that makes this intriguing for me. Skyfall (Bond 23) Starring: Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Judi Dench, Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney Director: Sam Mendes Out: 9th November 2012

MGMs bankruptcy troubles are behind them so Bond is finally back in production. The plot sees him question his loyalty to M when her past actions bring serious consequences to the present. After MI6 itself is attacked, Bond must seek out and eliminate the threat. Bardem plays the main villian. Fiennes role is undisclosed. Young Ben Whishaw is the new Q. China will be one of the main locations. Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Jarhead) directs from a script by Wade and Purvis, whove been the main writers on every Bond since TWINE. Quantum was a stumble from Casino Royale, replacing freshness with formula. Hopefully theyve learnt from the mistake. 2012 will be the 50th anniversary of Dr. No and the franchise. Red Dawn Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Adrianne Palicki, Josh Peck, Isabel Lucas, Jeffrey Dean Morgan Director: Dan Bradley Out: 21st November 2012

Chris Hemsworth (Thor) stars in this remake of the worst-fears-realised action-thriller from 84, about an invasion of the U.S. mainland by the Soviets and their Central American allies. That story focused on a group of American high school students who resisted their foreign occupiers through guerrilla warfare. This time, its a North Korean invasion. It was filmed as the Chinese army, but the studio lost its nerve and altered the flags in post-production. Nonetheless, with

the Cold War long over this feels like an edgy, un-pc concept and Im extremely curious to see the result. Also, due to MGMs bankruptcy, its been sitting on the shelf for over 2 years, so long that Kim Jong-Il has died waiting, so thatll have to be updated too. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Starring: Martin Freeman, Sir Ian McKellen, James Nesbitt, Richard Armitage, Andy Serkis Director: Peter Jackson Out: 14th December 2012

Hobbit Bilbo (Freeman) begins his journey to the Lonely Mountain accompanied by a group of dwarves to reclaim a treasure taken from them by the dragon Smaug. The first movie in what has now become The Hobbit Trilogy. The Desolation of Smaug follows exactly one year later, and the final chapter, There and Back Again comes six months after that. Sir Ian Gandalf McKellen returns, as does Andy Serkis, Cate Blanchett, and Hugo Weaving. Also in the mix are smaller roles for Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Ian Holm, and Christopher Lee. Some have had their fill of Lord Of The Rings, but after a 9 year break most will be pretty excited to see this particular story finally done right. The trailer has an adventurous spirit, showcasing fun and frolicking alongside hints of darkness to come. Jack Reacher Starring: Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Robert Duvall, Werner Herzog Director: Christopher McQuarrie Out: 21st December 2012

Django Unchained Starring: Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington Director: Quentin Tarantino Out: 25th December 2012

Spaghetti western set in Americas Deep South, which Tarantino calls a southern. The plot follows a slave-turned-bounty hunter (Foxx) who, with the help of his German mentor (Waltz), sets out to rescue his wife (Washington) from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner (DiCaprio). A plantation owner who forces his slaves to fight in twisted death matches. The fantastic cast also includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sacha Baron Cohen, Kurt Russell, Don Johnson, James Remar, Anthony LaPaglia, RZA and Tom Savini. It will be very interesting to see DiCaprio in a villain role, especially such a nasty one. SUMMARY Excellent The Raid: Redemption, The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, Looper Very Good MIB 3, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Bourne Legacy, The Expendables 2, Dredd Decent Contraband, Safe House, John Carter, Safe, Snow White And The Huntsman Mixed Reaction Haywire, Act Of Valor, This Means War, Lockout, Total Recall
