believe that almost everyone on the planet likes to gamble (at least once in a while). Its the reason that casinos are popping-up all over the world, and its definitely the reason that the Power Ball game is so ridiculously popular. I ignore Power Ball simply because the odds guarantee that you are wasting your money. You basically have zero chance to win. And now we know that a group of 16 workers from our area of the world just hit the massive jackpot. One of the three lucky tickets was sold in a local Acme Market in Little Egg Harbor, and the Ocean County group of 16 winners is splitting their $86 million jackpot; a whopping $3,872,445.94 each, after taxes, which explains the title of this column. This is actually a great story because all of them seem like really good people, and its a happy, local event. They work together; they have fun together; and if someone had to win, the Ocean 16 truly deserved the break of a lifetime. One of the most interesting members of the group, Will Seeley, was interviewed on a national TV show and was asked what he did when he discovered the unbelievably good news. He said that he immediately drove to tell his father not to worry about his present bout with cancer, the deadly disease that took the life of Wills mother. I have the money, he told his father, and we are going to beat this dreaded disease. After the massive destruction caused by Miss Sandy, and all the other struggles our area has faced, this memorable group of 16 somehow beat the devil. It seems as though Power Ball is not such a bad thing after all.

KATHY IRELAND REVEALED

This former swimsuit supermodel is now designing and licensing everything from bridal gowns to replacement windows, making her bigger than Martha Stewart and Tommy Bahama. We spoke exclusively with Nicholas Walker, Kathy Ireland Worldwides Design Ambassador, to discover the ins and outs of this successful lifestyle brand and whats next for the company.

Appearing in thirteen consecutive issues of the infamous Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition, as well as three of its covers, demonstrated that. But being a cover girl was never Irelands ideal. From a young age, Ireland had more of an affinity for business. As a toddler, she shared a painted rock stand with her older sister, where she showed early signs of possessing an enterprising mind by marketing her decorative pebbles for two for ten cents to her sisters one for a dime. At age 11, Ireland showed her buoyant gumption when she acquired her own paper route, driven by an advertisement that was explicitly recruiting paper boys. Modeling, which was always just a way to make some extra money in her early days, deterred her business plans for a while. While she maintained enormous success in the modeling world, she always knew that she belonged on the opposite side of the camera where she could call the shots. Last year though, Ireland was a cover girl once again. This time for Forbes magazine. Their story, Super Model/Super Mogul, detailed how this former swimsuit babe has now surpassed Martha Stewarts licensing empire and has become the first lady of flyover country. It all started thusly In the early 1990s, Irelands days as a high-fashion supermodel quickly waning, she was asked to model a pair of socks

for a company. She took the job. But on the condition that she could go into business with them too. Kathy Ireland Worldwide (kiWW) was launched in 1993 with those socks. Today, Fairchild Publications calls Kathy Ireland one of the 50 most influential people in fashion and her company is one of the Top 25 most powerfully-licensed brands in the world (according to Licensing Global Magazine), ranking higher than Tommy Bahama, Polo Ralph Lauren, and the previously-mentioned Martha Stewart. The still privately-owned company has since moved on to sportswear, sleepwear, furs, home and garden accessories, rugs, furniture, kitchenware, office supplies, jewelry, skincare products, crystal, bridal gowns, wedding destinations, replacement windows, and much, much more. Wait. Did we say replacement windows? Wheres the glamour and high-fashion in that? Thats the brilliance behind the branding of kiWW, whose goal is to bring style to (primarily) Middle American homes at realistic costs, and whose main mission is steadfastly unwavering; finding solutions for families, especially busy moms. Ireland, age 50, knows first-hand what it is to be a busy mom. She and her husband Gregory Olsen, an emergency room physician and CEO of a commercial fishing enterprise, have three children: Chloe, Erik, and Lily. She concedes that her priorities are faith and family first. Business comes second. But with a design and lifestyle business that has over 15,000 products in over 50 countries, not to mention as indicated in the aforementioned Forbes article reportedly retails nearly $2 billion annually (yes, billion with a B), which then converts into about $850 million in wholesale, business is clearly a very close second. Impressive as those financial statistics are, conversations about money are considered terribly uncouth. And Kathy Ireland is anything but. maybe its a combination of the bold colors of La Vida Buena with the clean lines of Architectural. Whatever it is, compliment it with what you gravitate towards. Dont be afraid to mix and match. However, you must honor Mother Nature and use her as a mentor shell win if you dont align yourself to her. Determine where the sun exposure and shade are. Figure out what your ground is like is it soil, clay, organic, or sterile? If you dont honor the basics, you can waste your money. In our sustainable practice, we try not to simply use grass (a great option, but do you really need a front and back lawn?). The kiWW brand advocates a holistic approach. A devout Christian, Ireland is also very outspoken in her support for Israel, where she and her family have a home. In 2009, she became an international ambassador for Friends of Sheba Medical Center, for whom she filmed a promotional documentary titled Holyland Heroes, which draws attention to the Centers work for Israels wounded soldiers and victims of terrorist attacks. With beauty, brains, benevolence, billions, and the gratitude of busy moms (who raise glasses of their kids milk and toast her daily), Kathy Ireland certainly seems to have it all. Mercedes-Benz/Porsche of Atlantic City of Atlantic City (MBPAC) was no different from many other businesses during Superstorm Sandy last October. They were hit. And they were hit hard. So in order to save hundreds of the most prestigious vehicles in the area from being flooded, they had to hustle. It took nine long hours, but the staff at MBPAC was able to successfully move every single one of their 287 cars to higher ground. However, the dealership itself still had over three feet of water to contend with. Long Motor Group, which had only recently acquired the franchise on the Black Horse Pike in West Atlantic City from Dr. Leonard Berger, a Baltimore businessman and philanthropist, quickly realized that a relocation was necessary. he emperor of legend would feel right at home in this spectacular beach house, a design showcase that, unlike many grand houses, also feels like just like home. Maybe its the evidence of family life here and there: pieces of mail tossed on an embossed-gold end table; a dispenser of Spongebob soap in a childs bathroom; a young girls rattan traveling desk, locked against prying eyes; a third-floor beach-themed hideaway, designed for a pair of rough-and-tumble boys. Mostly, there is the sense that someone loves this place, loved it enough to lavish it with one-of-a-kind furniture, fixtures and art. Five years ago, a split-level bungalow occupied this prime real estate in Margate. Though the ocean was just a stones throw from the front door, the squat bungalow, one house up from the beachfront,

did not make the most of its surroundings, particularly the incredible views, which were barely visible from the second floor. When the new owners bought the property, they recycled the interior fittings and old appliances and donated what was salvageable to charity. Then they set about building a home worthy of the setting: a Mediterranean villa with stucco walls, red roof tiles, ornamental iron work and lanterns, balconies with wraparound balustrades, and Old World arcade-style archways. Lucky guests may enjoy a circular saltwater pool with sun shelf or bubbling Jacuzzi set with cobalt Mediterranean tiles, or loll in the canopied poolside chaise that brings to mind the famous howdah or carriage atop Lucy the Elephant, the Victorian-era elephant-shaped building that is Margates most popular landmark. Inside, the foyer sets the stage for the rest of the home. The floor is a jigsaw of marble mosaic tile, imported from Italy and meticulously hand-laid. In the well of the demi-lune staircase hangs a dazzling nine-foot, 175-pound custom chandelier made of 40,000 Swarovski crystals. An adjoining salon with bar takes its aesthetic cues from an intricately hand-painted MacKenzie-Childs occasional table that looks like something from a Mary Engelbreit storybook. In a previous incarnation, this room was a Las Vegas-style lounge decorated in sleek black, white and silver. After damage from Hurricane Sandy, though the black-and-white marble tile floor remained, the rest of the room was transformed into this welcoming and eclectic space marked by a fusion of contrasting fabrics and textures, says Phillip Greenberg of Phillip Greenberg Interiors: the plush bar stools combine tone-on-tone stripes and a cheetah print in teal, no less. An imposing floor mirror with a black suede frame is set off by hand-rubbed metal nail-heads in a scrollwork motif. Of course theres plenty of room for revelers, who can have a drink at the bar or sink into a 160inch custom sofa. Overhead, a dual-headed Italo Venzania fan stirs the air and the senses: two fans at the end of a swing bar are contained in decorative chrome cages for an industrial-funky look that completes the room. A Summer Place For these homeowners this is their seashore getaway its all about the details. There is a surprise around every corner, and an anecdote behind every surprise. A kitchen chandelier is actually a hand-blown candelabrum discovered in a Paris flea market, and wired and hung with amber and clear glass seashells and fish. The kitchen table was crafted of wall panels from an old cathedral. A colorful channel-back settee is covered with a vintage tablecloth from the 1920s. In the baths and powder rooms, several vessel sinks are encrusted with rhinestones, crystals, mother of pearl or a combination of all three (one includes a tiny jeweled elephant, in witty tribute to Lucy). Such details lend charm to the opulent home and reflect the owners taste, creativity and sense of whimsy. The woman of the house thinks of all the

accessories the sinks, the faucets as the jewelry of the house, says Greenberg, who has offices in Longport and Philadelphia. To the smallest detail from a cabinet handle shaped like a cherry tree branch, to a brooch-sized sink stopper in the shape of a nautilus shell each element was carefully selected. As the new home was being built, we were shopping and designing and collecting, says Greenberg. It was turnkey a year from the teardown. Each room has its own personality, says Pat McCarthy, owner of Artistic Hardware of Northfield, which provided the ceiling fans, sinks and faucets, shower doors and kitchen accoutrements. Every bath and sink area is unique, and each one is done beautifully. Lets Eat Downstairs, an open floor plan makes this home perfect for entertaining from pool parties and family barbecues to lavish fundraisers hosted by the philanthropic couple. Of course, everyone gravitates to the kitchen, which adjoins a comfortable and low-key living area. Theres always room for one more: the oversized custom island, topped with a massive, 130-by50-inch slab of seamless granite, has seating for five. And the big dining table is flanked both by a tufted, tapestry-print sofa and upholstered armchairs inset with crocodile-leather backs. Appliances by Sub-Zero and Wolf make food prep a snap for the host or caterer. The hand-forged and hammered copper range hood and sink by Luxury Copper, installed by Artistic Hardware, has a cocoa finish that will age beautifully, says McCarthy. Its antique copper to begin with, which typically will hold its patina. Of course, its indestructible and will never rust. And 100 years from now if you polish it, it will come up like a new penny. For convenience as well as charm, a gantry faucet with articulated arm and matching pot filler are mounted over the cooktop. The kitchens rustic natural look is repeated in the backsplash, of terra cotta tile from Mexico, and the rough-hewn travertine floor, set in a random modular pattern. For really easy living, many of the furnishings, indoors and out, are covered in weather- and moisture-resistant Sunbrella fabrics, so guests can dash in and out of the pool area without changing out of swimwear.

Dream On Upstairs, the master suite is a vision in soft turquoise, butter and ivory a color palette echoed by the sand and sea, which are visible from the balcony. When its time for shuteye the drapes can be remotely drawn. And who wouldnt want to nod off in this kingsize bed, piled high with decorative pillows and a floral comforter of robins-egg blue? show house. More, More, More Such extravagance of design, such elegant, dazzling and occasionally unconventional style creates a sense of curiosity and discovery that no doubt drives guests from room to room to view the whole house. But when it comes to this place, a single visit wont do. One might overlook the distressed chest of drawers that serves as a vanity. It took a small village of artisans to create this piece, which was handpainted with a beach mural, fitted with a custom marble top and gem-laden basin, set on wooden turtles feet, and finished with a farmhouse pump faucet. Then there is the pool bath with its Under the Sea mural, made of more than 5,000 pieces of marble framed in black onyx. Or the Kohler hatbox toilet, that doesnt look like a toilet at all. Or the very polite Toto toilet that raises its own lid when someone enters the bathroom. Its all too, too much. And its just right. Or, as Coleridge might say, it is a vision in a dream. n

Welcome to Backyard & Beyond a new travel column that highlights a charming and distinctive New Jersey town and then showcases another fabulous destination within driving distance from our great state thats just as exciting.
addonfield, New Jersey has a vast, rich history and an exciting and active present, about which you probably already know a little something, like: its noted for its historic homes; it has an array of lovely and unique shops; its a dry town. Heres what you may not know about it: it was founded by a Quaker woman (Elizabeth Haddon); it is presently celebrating its Tricentennial; a dinosaur was discovered there. Located in Camden County, this quaint town the second municipality in New Jersey to establish a historic preservation district (Cape May was first)

is densely populated with lawyers, jamming with adorable boutiques and BYOBs, and easily accessible by car, bus, or train from Philadelphia to the shore regions. Haddonfield was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Indians, also known as the Delaware Indians, who lived throughout the Delaware Valley. Remnants of the Lenape, like arrowheads and pottery, are still occasionally found in Haddonfield, alluding to their role in the towns history. Haddonfields famous and historic Indian King Tavern (IKT) is named for the local Lenapes. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, IKT, currently a museum, was built in 1750 and is a leading example of 18th-century tavern architecture, as well as one of New Jerseys most famous buildings. Once a functioning tavern hotel used by travelers to and from Pennsylvania and Delaware, it played an important role during the American Revolution. Its not only where the New Jersey government rid itself of its colony status to become a state during the war, but it was also an active meeting place for assemblymen and legislators, due to the fact that the capital of Trenton was being overrun by fighting troops. Todays Haddonfield is much mellower. The scenic downtown district, which is about two miles long, is an eclectic mix of chic salons and day spas, contemporary dining establishments and a trendy shopping scene, which has more than six blocks of fashionable boutiques, apothecaries, haberdashers, jewelry stores, and home dcor, lingerie, and antique shops. It has been touted the areas Best Shopping District by Philadelphia Magazine. And The New York Times has described the setting as probably the best collection of shops anywhere in the state. The hip downtown area is delightfully blended with old-town goings-on for all ages like architectural walking tours, serene carriage rides and an assortment of festive community events throughout the year, such as tree plantings, quilt displays, First Fridays, historic house and garden tours, a farmers market, Colonial costume events, art shows, galas, singalongs, and more. And just off the beaten path is Haddonfield Plays & Players, a non-profit community theatre that does

everything from madcap musicals to significant straight plays year-round. Because of the towns 300th birthday this year, Haddonfield has been even more abuzz than ever with celebratory special events, triumphant live performances, and fun commemorative contests. Then theres the dinosaur. Finding an eight-foot bronze and stone sculpture of a Hadrosaurus foulkii dinosaur in the middle of Haddonfields shopping district may be somewhat disconcerting to many. But imagine if you came across the real thing there. Well, thats not far off from what happened back in October of 1858 when a crew of local diggers from the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences excavated a nearly-complete skeleton of a gigantic prehistoric animal from a marl pit on a nearby Haddonfield farm. This find became Americas first and the most complete dinosaur discovery in the world at that time, thus affirming Haddonfields significance in todays continuing study of paleontology. Now Haddy, as this loveable creature is affectionately called, proudly watches over the town from his permanent spot on Kings Highway. The statue has been a popular attraction for the past eight years, but even more so since recently being named Best of South Jersey Hidden Gems in USA Today. If you choose to stay overnight, The Haddonfield Inn is an intimate and elegant Victorian bed and breakfast thats been remodeled to ensure historic preservation. This enchanting Inns eight guest rooms and one suite (all with private en-suite baths) all suggest a feeling of an exotic culture, from Dublin to Hong Kong to an African safari. And the Inn is only a four to five block stroll to the downtown area, so its close enough to the heart of everything in Haddonfield, while still offering the quiet secludedness essential for a peaceful romantic getaway. Newport, RI Newport, an extraordinarily picturesque town, is considered the gem of Rhode Island if not New England as a whole (in fact, Good Morning America named Newport one of the 10 Most Beautiful
Places in America in 2011). From our state, it is a straight ride up the East Coast and even from Jerseys furthest part only about a five-and-a-half hour drive. Founded on the principals of religious freedom, it was originally established by English colonists in 1639. By the mid-eighteenth century, it had become one of the countrys top-five leading ports (along with Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Charleston). During the Revolutionary War, the town was in a state of turbulence and upheaval due to British occupancy. Just prior to the Civil War, however, Newport became known as a summer colony for artists, scientists, educators, theologians, and writers who helped to redesign its cultural foundation. However, it was during Americas Gilded Age (approximately 1870 to the turn of the 20th century) when Newport became famous as a playground for Americas bluebloods like the Astors, the Vanderbilts, the Whartons, and recently, Philadelphias own billionairess/ humanitarian/philanthropist, Dorrance Dodo Hamilton, of Campbell Soup fame. Modern-day Newport, dubbed the City-by-the-Sea, is a thriving coastal enclave thats rich with breathtakingly beautiful marinas. Unique shops, art galleries, antique stores, and souvenir stands ubiquitously line the streets and beckon you in to purchase a treat for yourself or a loved one at home. There are many spectacular festivals and music events that take place year-round. It also has a pleasing mix of international eateries like Italian, Mexican, and French that can take you from light, casual fare to an unforgettable fine dining experience. And, of course, there are the stunning Gilded Age mansions. The Gilded Age mansions or summer cottages as the rich and famous referred to them as are open to the public for tours throughout the year. Newports Bellevue Avenue is virtually besieged with these former seasonal homes of Americas elite industrialists, which include Gothic Revival cottages, grand Victorians, and opulent French and Italian-style palaces. Of special note is The Breakers, a

National Historic Landmark, and perhaps the grandest-of-the-grand of Newports mansions. In 1893, Cornelius Vanderbilt II (CNNs Anderson Coopers greatgrandfather) commissioned architect Richard Morris Hunt to design this magnificent and extravagant 70-room Italian Renaissance-style villa inspired by the 16th century palaces of Genoa and Turin. FRANK SINATRA
Francis Albert Sinatra, Ol Blue Eyes, may be New Jerseys most famous son. Born in Hoboken, Sinatra rose to fame crooning tunes for band leaders like Harry James and Tommy Dorsey. He eventually branched out to movies, playing roles in musicals like On the Town, Guys and Dolls, Can Can, and Pal Joey. But he proved himself a true actor in dramas like The Manchurian Candidate, Suddenly, and From Here to Eternity (which earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor). Often called Chairman of the Board, Sinatra headed up the Rat Pack, which included cronies Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop, and Peter Lawford. During his career, he was nominated for numerous awards and presented with many including Golden Globes, Grammys, an Emmy, a Peabody, the Kennedy Center Honors Award, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, the Presidential Medal Of Honor, and the Congressional Gold Medal Congress highest civilian award. Married four times (including to actresses Ava Gardner and Mia Farrow), he had three children, all of whom work in the entertainment industry. Sinatra is considered by many to be the greatest performer of popular music and the most popular entertainer of the 20th century.

After securing Hollywood immortality playing Rhett Butler opposite Vivien Leighs Scarlett OHara in Gone with the Wind, Clark Gable was hailed The King of Hollywood. During his reign, he starred in movies with the most famous leading ladies of his time like Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Jean Harlow, Lana Turner, Myrna Loy, Grace Kelly, and Ava Gardner. His 1934 screwball comedy, It Happened One Night, is one of only three movies to date to sweep all top five Academy Awards (Movie; Screenplay; Director: Frank Capra; Actor: Gable; Actress: Claudette Colbert). Gable was married five times, most notably to actress Carole Lombard, who was killed in a plane crash in 1942 while traveling home from a war bond-selling tour (dubiously making her the first war-related American female casualty of World War II). His last film, The Misfits, was also the last complete film for his co-star, Marilyn Monroe. His fifth wife bore his only child, a son, who was born four months after his death in 1960.

Generally considered to have been one of the greatest and most influential actors of the 20th century (by peers like Elia Kazan, Tennessee Williams, Martin Scorsese, Laurence Olivier, and Johnny Depp, among others), Marlon Brando was only 23 years old when he played Stanley Kowalski, the role that catapulted him to international fame, in Tennessee Williams Broadway play, A Streetcar Named Desire. He eventually went on to star in the Hollywood movie version of the play, as well as headline in such other notable films as The Wild One, On the Waterfront, Julius Caesar, Viva Zapata, Guys and Dolls (a musical in which Brando is supposed to know how to sing and Frank Sinatra isnt go figure!), Mutiny on the Bounty, Apocalypse Now and, of course, The Godfather. So powerful is his influence on the acting craft that today there are considered two chapters in acting before Brando and after Brando.
HUMPHREY BOGART
Affectionately referred to as Bogie, Humphrey Bogart the son of a doctor and an artist grew up comfortably attending private schools and learning how to sail. His first acting role was as a Japanese waiter in a stage play. Once in Hollywood, Bogart began to get typecast as villains and bad guys roles that quickly became rote for him. So he jumped at the chance to bring Dashiell Hammetts private eye, Sam Spade, to the screen in The Maltese Falcon, which essentially redefined his career. Following that success, he was cast in his first real romantic role opposite beautiful Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca a film that, to this day, still vies for best movie ever made. When Lauren Bacall, a 19-year-old model-turned-actress, was cast with Bogie (age 44) in the screenplay adaptation of Ernest Hemingways novel To Have and Have Not, sparks flew. They went on to make three more movies together, in addition to marrying and having two children. Other notable films include Sabrina, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and The African Queen, the last of which garnered him his only Oscar for Best Actor for his performance as the rough-and-ready boat captain. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Bogart the greatest male star in the history of American cinema.
CARY GRANT
Born Archibald Leach in England, Cary Grant is the ultimate Hollywood leading man devastatingly handsome, dashing, debonair, he was the epitome of elegance, charm and sophistication. He was equally at ease playing comedic roles (a veritable master of physical comedy and comic timing) as he was serious ones. Some of his most famous movies are The Philadelphia Story (with Katharine Hepburn), His Girl Friday (with Rosalind Russell), An Affair to Remember (with Deborah Kerr) and Charade (with Audrey Hepburn). He was the favorite leading man of legendary director Alfred Hitchcock, for whom he starred in classics like Notorious, To Catch a Thief, and North by Northwest. Grant was the first actor to become a free agent, effectively leaving the Hollywood studio system. Married five times, his wives included Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton (one of the wealthiest women in the world) and actress Dyan Cannon, who had his only child, Jennifer, when he was 62 years old. Never winning a competitive Academy Award, he was granted an honorary Oscar for his unique mastery of the art of screen acting and also earned the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor for Career Achievement in the Performing Arts. Grants Hollywood image concealed his deeply complex personal life, prompting him to once famously quip, Everyone wants to be Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant.

CLINT EASTWOOD
Clint Eastwood, who grew up in northern California, never considered himself a cowboy mainly because he wasnt one. But he sure did find his niche early on in Westerns, first starring in the television show Rawhide, and then spaghetti westerns like A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. He switched gears to play detective Harry Callahan in a string of movies such as Dirty Harry, Sudden Impact, and The Dead Pool. Aside from acting in numerous successful films, he has also directed over 30 movies including Play Misty for Me, Mystic River, Unforgiven, and Million Dollar Baby (the last two won him Best Director Oscars). Always interested in politics, Eastwood made successful forays into both local and state government he was elected mayor of his adopted hometown, Carmel-bythe-Sea, California, and appointed to the California State Park and Recreation Commission. A jazz aficionado, Eastwood composed the scores for several of his films including The Bridges of Madison County, Gran Torino, Flags of Our Fathers, and J. Edgar.
Paul Newman was a talented actor with a passion for race cars and a philanthropic nature. A Broadway stage actor, he moved to Hollywood with his first wife (with whom he had three children) and successfully transitioned to film. Always serious about his craft, Newman is known for such movies as Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Hud, Cool Hand Luke, The Verdict, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and The Sting the last two he starred in with pal Robert Redford. He first worked with actress Joanne Woodward on The Long, Hot Summer in 1957. They married in 1958 and through the years had three daughters and worked on more than a dozen more movies together. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for playing Fast Eddie in The Color of Money (1986), a role he originated in The Hustler (1961). In the 1980s, he founded Newmans Own, a food line containing salad dressings, pasta sauce, lemonade, and more. His policy was that all proceeds, after taxes, be donated to charity. To date, the company has earned over $370 million and donated all to various charities. He and Woodward remained married for 50 years, separated only by his death in 2008.

BURT LANCASTER SIDNEY POITIER

Sidney Poitier, the first black actor to win a competitive Academy Award, was born prematurely in Miami to vacationing Bahamian parents. He grew up in the Bahamas until a teenager, when he was then sent to live with his brother in Florida. He moved to New York City and made an arrangement with the American Negro Theater to get acting lessons in exchange for his janitorial services. After years on Broadway, Poitier went to Hollywood where he immediately began to break down walls, color barriers, and racial stereotypes. First nominated for an Academy Award for his role in The Defiant Ones with Tony Curtis (1958), he won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Lillies of the Field (1963). Other significant movies include A Patch of Blue, Guess Whos Coming to Dinner, In the Heat of the Night, and To Sir, with Love. Married twice, Poitier has six daughters. In 2009, President Barack Obama awarded Sidney Poitier the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the U.S.

Noted for his incredibly athletic physique, Burt Lancaster studied circus arts, specifically acrobatics, at an early age. After an injury thwarted his acrobatic career, he tried acting. His long, lean and handsome looks got Hollywoods attention and he was first cast with the gorgeous Ava Gardner in The Killers, a film noir version of Ernest Hemingways short story. While many of his earlier films tended to exploit his athleticism, he eventually grew out of those roles and began playing more serious and distinguished characters. Lancaster filmed one of the most iconic movie scenes of all time in From Here to Eternity, when he and Deborah Kerr made love on a Hawaiian beach amid the crashing waves which was quite scandalous for its time. In 1960 Lancaster won the Academy Award for Best Actor, a Golden Globe and the New York Film Critics Award for his performance in Elmer Gantry. Other important movies include Sweet Smell of Success, Judgment at Nuremberg, Birdman of Alcatraz and Atlantic City.

Despite his movie star good looks, athletic build, and tousled blond hair, California-born Robert Redford was expelled from college and fired from his first few jobs. After a quick jaunt to Europe to become an artist (he failed there too), he eventually moved to New York City to give acting a try. His breakthrough role was in Neil Simons Broadway hit, Barefoot in the Park (years later he starred in the movie version with Jane Fonda). Once in Hollywood, he won a Golden Globe for Best New Star playing a bi-sexual movie star who marries Natalie Wood in Inside Daisy Clover. Concerned about being stereotyped as a pretty boy, he began avoiding roles that played up his sex symbol status, instead contending for more demanding roles that would achieve him not just commercial success, but critical success as well. He attained both in films like The Candidate, The Sting, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Way We Were, All the Presidents Men, The Natural, and Out of Africa. Also a celebrated director (his directorial debut for Ordinary People won him an Oscar) as well as producer, Redford started the Sundance Institute in 1981, a non-profit organization created to advance the work of filmmakers and storytellers worldwide. The main program of the Institute is the Sundance Film Festival, a premier platform for American and international independent film. n

BE AT ONE WITH THE UNIVERSE. IF YOU CANT DO THAT, AT LEAST BE AT ONE WITH YOUR BIKE. LENNARD ZINN
EXPERIENCE THE BEAUTY OF SHORE LIVING BY TAKING A BIKE TOUR AROUND THE ISLAND
egardless of what you ride rugged dirt-bikes, Tour de France 10-speed, or an anywhere hybrid you want to find a nice trail with interesting scenery (and maybe a bite to eat or drink). If you are fortunate enough to live on or near Absecon Island, then your backyard is a perfect 8-mile bike path that includes the famous AC Boardwalk continuing into the end of Ventnor, wide streets with bike-only lanes in Margate and Longport, and, most importantly, views of the ocean from every angle. Biking, unlike most other sports, can be done alone or with a group. If you prefer the on-my-own route, biking allows you to become one with your bicycle a Zen blend of exercise and introspection. As your legs move the bike along, you almost become part of the mechanics and energy of the bike. The wheels rotate and your mind relaxes as you take in the sights. Or, you can make it a social or family event to share the experience. Scott Fleischer, a Philadelphia psychiatrist who bikes avidly when he comes to the shore, sees biking as his selftherapy. He feels strongly that there is something magical about the sounds that bicycle wheels make gliding over the boardwalk. Fleischer sings the praises of biking on the island from a physical and emotional perspective. He prescribes biking the island as if it were a healing salve. For those of us with sand in our cycling shoes, the sea air, sounds, and smells make everything, including cycling, better. Whether going solo or with friends or family, whats a typical bike tour of the island? Like the scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz said while pointing in both directions, Some people go that way. When you bike the 8-mile island, heading north towards Gardeners Basin or south towards the point in Longport, you are provided with opportunities for an easy and pleasant beach ride. If you head towards the Inlet, you can bike the entire boardwalk, from Atlantic City to the end of Ventnor. Since
Atlantic City strictly enforces its boardwalk biking hours, riding into the city means you are up early. Most stores and restaurants are closed, so it really gives you the chance to breathe in the morning air and view the unpopulated beach. As you bike through upper Chelsea, you see stately homes and condo buildings for about a mile until passing the Atlantic Casino. From there on, its AC at its best souvenir shops, hot dogs and pizza joints, salt water taffy shops, and casinos to your left. But to your right, the ocean and her breezes cool you off as you peddle away. Although there are plenty of stops along the way, you probably just want to go full steam ahead until you hit the end of the island. Unfortunately, years of disrepair and Hurricane Sandy, cut the boardwalk short past Connecticut Avenue. No worries here for a biker. Just head towards Atlantic Avenue, sail past the Absecon Light House, and down New Hampshire Avenue towards the inlet. New Hampshire Avenue is unpopulated early mornings and you can really pump those legs and fly the last few minutes of your ride. Just as your heart rate is up and you feel exhilarated, a giant statue of Neptune welcomes you to Gardeners Basin where you can rest on jetty rocks with stunning views of the ocean and Brigantine. If you need a bite to eat or drink at Gardeners Basin, Gilchrists serves an early breakfast on their dock. Grace Perez-Navarro, Margate resident and summer biker, enjoys her rides to the Inlet. After biking from Margate, I like watching the fishing boats and the Para-sailing crews prepare for their day. And, since I burn off plenty of carbs getting there, I dont feel guilty about indulging in Gilchrists blueberry pancakes best on the planet. After breakfast, try biking around the Aquarium, the once-upon-a-time Steel Pier diving bell, and some novelty shops before returning. Because you cannot bike the boards in AC after 10 AM (noon in the off-season), make sure you

allow enough time to cross the AC border and ride into Ventnor before ACPD waives you off. As you continue south towards Longport, the Ventnor boardwalk offers views of grand old beach houses on your right side. If you need another break, the Ventnor Pier on Cornwall Avenue is a great place to walk your bike onto and view the world standing right over the ocean. If you are with friends and family, its a great place for a photo-op of AC or downbeach in the background depending on your shot. As Ventnor ends, so does the boardwalk and your biking path leaves the beach onto Atlantic Avenue in Margate. Wide and well-marked bike-only paths give you a great way to peddle by Lucy the Elephant and gorgeous houses and gardens all through Margate and Longport. Once in Longport, meander through the side streets leading up to the beach to see homes to die for from modern Miami Vice safe-house architecture to Victorian-like mansions. Since Longport is 99.9% residential, Ozzies on Atlantic Avenue is the only place to get a bite to eat. At this point (pun intended), you are a few peddles away from the Point the end of Absecon Island in Longport. So, you may want to plan your Ozzies breakfast after reaching the bottom of the island. After a great bike ride, you are met with breathtaking views of Ocean City in the distance and the bay and Atlantic converging over giant jetty rocks at your feet a perfect spot for another photo-op or a place to just sit and ponder the universe. Whether you ride up to AC or down to Longport, Absecon Island is one great bike path. Some people peddle through the hills of Tuscany or along the roads of California wine country, but nothing feels better than the Atlantic Ocean breeze blowing through your hair as you take in the sights and sounds of Absecon Island from atop your trusty bicycle. n

Fall is a fine time for football, foliage, and Philadelphia.
Not too hot, not too cold, and not too crowded with summer vacationers, the City of Brotherly Love is a place to be savored and not gulped. History oozes from every nook and cranny. Philly was famous long before the Orlons sang about South Street. Its the place where Benjamin Franklin flew his kite, Betsy Ross sewed her flag, and Thomas Jefferson drafted his declaration. The hometown of W.C. Fields and Dick Clark is also the home of Americas most historic square mile. Theres no better place to mark the birth of the United States each summer. A week of fun, frolic, and fireworks marks the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Independence Hall is just one of more than two-dozen significant sites in the area. The Constitution was debated, amended, and approved at Congress Hall, home of Congress when Philadelphia was the nations capital from 1790-1800. The wording on the nearby Liberty Bell echoes the freedom theme: Proclaim liberty throughout all the land upon all the inhabitants thereof. Nearby neighbors include the National Constitution Center, the National Museum of American Jewish History, the Benjamin Franklin Museum, and the Presidents House where George Washington lived while Philadelphia enjoyed a short sojourn as the nations capital. The themes of liberty reverberate around every curve and corner. Philadelphia Museum of Art. Like Rocky, William Penn carved his niche in the citys history books. Penn designed Philadelphia as a greene countrie towne complete with trees, trails, and parks. Only two miles square, downtown Philadelphia is laid out in a simple grid stemming from the towering City Hall building at Broad & Market. Overlooking Center City is Billy Penns hat, once considered one of the worlds architectural wonders. It stands 37 feet high, 33 stories above the bustling world of Broad & Market. It was the tallest point in town for more than a century before the 62-story Liberty Place topped it in 1987. Penn deserves his prominent and permanent place: he wanted Philadelphia to be the worlds first planned city. Squeezed between the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers on its east and west, the city embraces five parks within a short walk of every compass point. European influences are evident everywhere. Greek Revival architecture is a hallmark of several prominent exhibition halls, while flag-lined Benjamin Franklin Boulevard, a broad diagonal avenue that links Center City with a myriad of museums, is called the Champs Elysees of America because it resembles the Parisian promenade. Franklins face, figure, and name are found all over the city. The Benjamin Franklin Life & Legacy Museum, a sweeping tribute to the inventor-diplomat, reopened in August after a two-year facelift. At the Franklin Institute, the domed Omnimax is one of three theaters (including the Fels planetarium and a smaller 3-D enclave) showing educational science fare. Part of the buildings exterior was built around an enormous steam locomotive that rolled into place on a specially-built track in 1937. Although such engines once rolled into Philadelphia with regularity, the city remains a transportation model. Amtraks futuristic Acela Express glides through the glistening 30th Street Station, an Art Deco edifice shiny again after a loving restoration. So many subways, trolleys, and trains of all descriptions rumble underneath that nobody needs a car in Philadelphia. Driving is a challenge anyway, with narrow streets, some covered in cobblestone, and many others designated for one-way traffic. Streets are especially clogged in Chinatown, a stones throw from the Convention Center and Reading Marketplace. The home of the worlds largest flower show every March, the convention center has even housed national political conventions. Many conventioneers stay across the street at the Philadelphia Downtown Marriott, which boosts 1,400 rooms, the fifth largest in the venerable chain. Double-decked tourist buses park on the side of the Marriott, making it easy for spouses of busy convention delegates to see the sights. Those sights include the busy Delaware River port, where the array of working vessels include amphibious vehicles of 1940s

The city gave the nation many firsts: the first public school, library, fire company, lightning rod, flag, bank, daily newspaper, circus, and theater.

vintage called the Philadelphia Ducks. Half their hour-long tour is spent on land, the other half in water. Also on the Delaware is Penns Landing, where the founder arrived in 1682. It includes a 37-acre park with a maritime museum, submarine, four-masted sailing ship, and even the U.S. flagship from the 1898 Spanish-American War. Penns promise of a haven for all obviously worked: there are 111 neighborhoods within the city limits of 129 square miles. The surrounding suburbs swell the metro area population to five million, making Philadelphia the fifth-largest city in the United States and second only to New York on the East Coast. It has been a river town, a railroad town, and a manufacturing hub, but has also established a reputation as a center for education and the arts. Philadelphia has more colleges than Boston and so many cultural venues along South Broad Street that the strip is also called Avenue of the Arts. The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the citys cultural crown jewel, has a 2,500-seat concert hall and 650-seat recital theater. When Washington and Jefferson walked the streets of Philadelphia, residents inhabited the compact townhouses that line Elfreths Alley, the oldest continually occupied street in the United States. Artisans and blacksmiths once lived in the 33 Colonial and Federal-style homes, which feature plaques indicating which of several competing fire companies was paid to put out the flames. The three-story homes, as narrow as the street itself, have outside mirrors so that residents on the third floor can see whos knocking on their door below. The restored City Tavern, where Washington once dined on West Indian pepper pot soup, was dubbed the most genteel tavern in the colonies by John Adams after its 1773 opening. The city gave the nation many firsts: the first public school (1698), library (1731), fire company (1736), lightning rod (1752), flag (1777), bank (1780), daily newspaper (1784), circus (1793), and theater (the Walnut Street theater, founded in 1809, is still active today). Also introduced in the city were the ice-cream soda (1876), X-Ray (1890), and the air-conditioned building (1932). Philadelphia has given the world Marian Anderson, Grace Kelly, Bill Cosby, Will Smith, Walt Whitman, Edgar Allen Poe, James A. Michener, and basketball legends Wilt Chamberlain and Julius Irving (Dr. J). Neither colonial portrait painter Gilbert Stuart, who dubbed Philadelphia the Athens of America, nor Alexander Graham Bell, who exhibited the telephone at the 1876 Philadelphia Exposition, would recognize the city today. Nor would the artists who created so many covers of the locally-produced Saturday Evening Post. The evolving skyline continues to change, from the permanent lighting of the Penn statue to the illumination of the seven Schuylkill River bridges. The City of Brotherly Love has come a such a long way that even W.C. Fields wouldnt hesitate to spend time in his hometown. In fact, hed be proud of it. n

As the daughter of a powerful Republican fundraiser and former member of the staff of President Gerald Ford, Fisher was in a unique position to share her message and dispel some of the myths and rumors about AIDS, especially in women. She urged everyone within the sound of her voice to show compassion for those living with HIV and AIDS. The speech, known as A Whisper of Aids is recognized in Words of a Century: The Top 100 American Speeches, 1900-1999, by Mario Cuomo. One of the most poignant points of the speech focused on the fact that HIV and AIDS can affect anyone; Tonight, I represent an AIDS community whose members have been reluctantly drafted from every segment of American society. Though I am white and a mother, I am one with a black infant struggling with tubes in a Philadelphia hospital. Though I am female and contracted this disease in marriage, and enjoy the
The Inspiring Journey of Mary Fisher, AIDS and Breast Cancer Survivor and Activist
The year was 1991. A young successful mother of two small boys was recently separated from her second husband when he gave her news that is difficult for anyone to imagine he was HIV positive. After testing, she found out that she had contracted the virus from him. This is how Mary Fisher began her journey as an outspoken advocate for the prevention and education of HIV and AIDS. Back then, there were limited treatment options for AIDS and HIV and people were dying everywhere, according to Fisher. She says she thought she would die within the month and began planning for her death. She became very ill and was unable to take the initial medications available, but as she experimented with various medications, she was able to manage the disease. Fisher says she didnt want her children to feel the stigma for her ex-husband or herself and made a choice to go public about her disease. After her story was published in a Detroit newspaper, she was invited to

They have not earned cruelty and they do not deserve meanness. They dont benefit from being isolated or treated as outcasts. Each of them is exactly what God made: a person. Not evil, deserving of our judgment; not

victims, longing for our pity. People. Ready for support and worthy of compassion. Fisher went on to create a support group for families and healthcare workers affected by AIDS, the Family AIDS Network. She was appointed to the National Commission on Aids by President George Bush and founded the Clinical AIDS Research and Education (CARE) Fund. Author of six books, her first memoir, My Name is Mary, was published in 1995. In 2011, Fisher was diagnosed with breast cancer, which she believes was linked to her HIV. In fact, The National Cancer Institute states that people infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) have a higher risk of some types of cancer due in part to a weakened immune system. After a mastectomy and while receiving treatment for breast cancer, Fisher began writing her second memoir, MESSENGER, A Self Portrait, published in 2012, which focuses on her experiences with breast cancer. When I asked her if she was treated any differently when diagnosed with cancer as opposed to HIV, she said the differences were enormous. With cancer, people are sympathetic. They offer opinions and come out of the woodwork to tell you their story and give you as much care and help as they can. With AIDS, they are reluctant to show compassion. They want to know
how you got it, what you did wrong to get it, and they want to blame. She says the shame is strong and people often feel helpless and hopeless. That is why she continues her fight against the stigma of HIV and AIDS. As an artist, Fisher is well-known for her textiles, quilts, and sculptures. She says her books, speeches, and art help spread her message of hope and let people know they have the power to help others. She believes in the power of art and healing and today, at age 65, she continues her work as an activist, artist, and author and will be the keynote at AtlantiCares 10th Annual Womens Health Signature Event on October 24. While her speech will focus on
her experiences with HIV and breast cancer, she wants to focus on the broad continuum of care and why women seek or do not seek care reasons they get tested or not for HIV or cancer. She will talk about fear, self-care and access and how we live with outcome. She says, It is really a matter of the choices we make. Do we quit, do we die? Do we see hope for a better day? Do we look for a way to help others and spread the message? I am hopeful that whenever I speak, I can reduce the stigma of HIV and show that this is a disease of not just men or gay men, but of human beings. All you have to do (to be at risk) is be human. She is looking forward to speaking at the AtlantiCare event and sharing

The Tall and Short of It

Can height predetermine your risk for certain diseases?
I HAVE OFTEN BEEN TOLD THAT GOD only lets things grow until they are perfect. Some of us do not take as long as others. New studies and research have shown that your height is not just a reflection of your perfection, but can affect your risk for a number of serious diseases. Being tall is not limited to inconvenience when you sit in a plane, car, or movie theater. And my biggest problem with my height (5 foot 1 inch) is not that when my friends drop something they ask me to pick it up because I am closer to the ground. Cancer It is often said that one of the benefits of being short is that you live longer. This is not just because tall people are more likely to get their heads caught in ceiling fans. In women, studies have shown that for every additional 10 cm (4 inches) in height, they have a 13-29% increased risk for developing a range of different cancers. These cancers include thyroid, breast, kidney, skin, colon, and rectal. This finding was not limited to women. In men, increased height is associated with an elevated risk for more lethal prostate cancer. There is a 23% increase for every 10 cm (4 inches) in height. One possible reason is that it could be an odds game: There is just more of tall people. They have more cells and tissue, meaning that there is an increased likelihood that some of those cells will develop abnormally and become malignant. Height is also influenced by a number of factors including hormones, other growth factors, and nutrition that could all play a role in elevating cancer risk. After all, cancer is abnormal growth of a cell. Heart Disease People who live at altitudes less than 5 feet 3 inches, are 50% more likely to die from heart disease than those north of that height. This may be explained by Randy Newmans song Short People where he pointed out that They got little hands, little eyes. They also have little coronary arteries. So when there is fatty plaque buildup in the vessel wall, blood flow is more profoundly affected. Another possibility is that tall people have a greater distance between certain points in their arteries and can put the heart under less strain (less resistance). Stroke When it comes to height, there is no mind over heart. Serious strokes are more common in short people. For every additional 10 cm (4 inches), there is a 13% increased risk of dying from a stroke. Reasons for this may date back to the womb. Reduced growth may result in a greater flow of blood supply and nutrition to the babys body and not the brain while in the uterus. Consequently, this may permanently alter the brains structure and make it more susceptible

to stroke later in life. Alternatively, taller people may have a different hormone profile that either protects them from or does not increase their risk for stroke. Alzheimers Disease Longer limbs can mean a decreased risk for dementia. One study found that for every extra inch of leg length, a womans risk for dementia is reduced by 16%. Additionally, women with the shortest arms were 50% more likely to develop dementia than those with the longest arms. Like real estate, this may be due to location, location, location. The part of the brain that influences limb growth is in the same region of the brain that is most severely affected by Alzheimers disease. Another possibility is that poor nutrition and health in a childs early life may not only stunt the growth of limbs, but also increase the probability of developing dementia. Important point: I want to maintain a great perspective on the big picture, probably because I am always looking up from where I stand. Height is NOT modifiable. What is modifiable is eating healthy, remaining active, and not smoking. n

Rising Interest Rates and the Effect on Your Portfolio

IN 1981, THE YIELD ON A 10 YEAR U.S. TREASURY peaked at over 15%. Over the last 30 years, fixed income investors have largely experienced a bull market for bonds as yields have consistently fallen, bottoming out in July 2012 at 1.53%. With the Federal Reserve taking unprecedented monetary policy action through the setting of the federal funds target rate between 0% and 0.25%, coupled with their bond purchases of $85 billion monthly, rates dont have much room to fall further. As the Fed tapers their bond buying, and eventually raises the fed funds rate, what effect will investors see on their portfolios? It is widely known that as bond yields rise, bond prices will fall. An investor who purchases a hypothetical bond today yielding 2% will earn $20 of interest annually per $1,000 par value bond. If yields were to rise to 3%, an investor can now earn $30 of interest per $1,000 par value, therefore making the 2% bond less valuable, resulting in a reduction in price. Investors today face heightened interest rate risk, the risk that rising yields will make their fixed interest rate bonds less valuable, as it is inevitable rates will rise in the future. Ben Bernanke, chairman of the Federal Reserve, raised the prospect of the fed lowering the amount of its monthly bond purchase in a June, 2013 speech. The fixed income market experienced a sell-off sending 10 year yields from just over 2% to 2.98% as of September 6. During that same time period, the iShares Core Total US Bond Market ETF (AGG) and Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF (BND) are down 3.78% and 3.71% respectively. From the July 2012 yield lows, AGG is down 6.59% while BND is down 6.91%. Although in the short term the bond market tends to overreact to interest rate moves, it is difficult to forecast the longer term effects of a bond portfolio as several factors come in to play. Principally among these factors are how long the fed takes to raise interest rates to their target level, the size of the overall interest rate move, and the starting level of rates at the onset of the rate hikes. Since 1994, there have been three periods of rising interest rates. From 2/4/94 2/1/95 rates were raised 3% over a 12-month period in seven installments. During the period 6/30/99 5/16/00, we saw rates rise 1.75% over a 10-month period through six increases. Finally, the period 6/30/04 6/29/06, the Fed raised rates 17 times, resulting in a 4.25% increase over 24 months. The total returns of the Broad Bond Market, as represented by the Barclays Aggregate Bond Index, were positive 0.01%, 2.11%, and 3.09% respectively during the above periods of rising rates. The Federal Reserve has maintained its commitment to keep interest rates low as the economy recovers, and has stated it will not begin to raise interest rates until the unemployment rate drops to 6.5%. When the Fed does start raising rates, it is widely believed they will do so in a gradual manner over a long period of time to help stabilize the markets. One unique difference today verses the past three rate hikes, is the much lower starting yield on the 10 year treasury. The starting yields during the last three rate hikes were 5.87%, 5.78%, and 4.58%. The income earned by investors during these periods helped cushion the price declines from rising rates contributing to positive total returns. The lower yield in todays environment may increase the likelihood investors will experience a negative total return in their traditional bond portfolios. It is important for investors to remain diversified within their fixed income portfolios, allocating their assets among different bond categories. Floating rate, high yield, convertible, and unconstrained bond fund managers can all provide diversification benefits to the traditional government/corporate bond portfolio. Alternative asset classes such as real estate, MLPs, and commodities can add additional benefits as these asset classes carry lower correlation to both bonds and equities. It is even more important to keep in mind that rising interest rates signify the economy is improving. As seen from recent rate hikes, total returns across the Aggregate Bond Market have been positive, and although investors may initially see their principal value fall as rates rise, their overall total return when factoring in income received may not be as bad as most predict. On the equity side, it is important to note that during the 21 periods of rising rates since 1970, the cumulative return of the S&P 500 during those periods have been positive 16 times, with eight of them positive by double digits. The worst cumulative return came during the rising rates between November 1981 and February 1982 when the S&P 500 returned a negative 5.47%. AtlantiCare representatives presented an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) Boardwalk Ambassadors on July 23. The presentation was the 100th AtlantiCare has made since 2002 through the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center Heart Heroes Matching Funds Program. This is the second AED AtlantiCare has presented to CRDA, said John Palmieri, executive director, CRDA. On eight occasions, our ambassadors have had to use the AED in resuscitating people on the boardwalk. These 100 AEDs have gone to schools, police and fire departments, various municipalities, community organizations, parks, businesses, and places of worship, said David Tilton, president and CEO, AtlantiCare. All are places where the public gather and where together, we have a chance to save a life. The ambassadors and all of our community partners who now have AEDs are helping AtlantiCare raise awareness about the importance of prompt care for heart attack and demonstrating their commitment to the well-being of our community. When it comes to a heart attack, time is muscle, said Howard Levite, MD, medical director, the Heart Institute and of ARMCs Cardiac Catheterization Labs. Golf fore Kids Event Exceeds All Expectations

The annual Golf fore Kids event benefiting The Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City and The First Tee DRIVE had a spectacular sold out golf event at Hidden Creek Golf Club on September 17th. Co-chairs Louis T. Barberio III and Tony Coppola Jr. hosted the golf outing amid perfect blue skies. NFL legend, Tiki Barber was a special guest who happily signed autographs and posed in pictures with every golfer
who attended. He later spoke graciously about his upbringing and the importance of being a positive role model for todays youth. Golfers were treated to an array of sponsorship tents, goodies and showed off their golf swings in the Big Break tournament. In conjunction with local support, sponsorships, and an amazing silent auction, the Golf fore Kids was highly successful in raising much needed funds for our youth.

The days are getting a little cooler, the ice cream lines
have melted away, and the leaves are a shade darker. As we say good-bye to sandals, shorts and SPF 50, I happily welcome the autumnal colors, the weather, and best of all the flavors. Change is never easy, and the transition from summer to fall should be a smooth one right down to the cocktail in your hand. So, good news dear reader, Sandeman Port has created Ciderhouse Sangria, featuring Sandeman Founders Reserve Port. I was skeptical, given my penchant for port, but I decided to give it a shot so to speak. Sandeman Founders Reserve serves as the foundation for notes of apple, maple, and spice to interlace seamlessly, with the end result, and I quote from their press release; Calling forth memories of apple picking, campfire stories and of course sprints into leaf piles. Well, I never did any of those things, but this recipe made me feel as if I had: Ingredients: 1 bottle of Sandeman Founders Reserve Porto 24-oz. apple cider 3-oz. rye whiskey 1.5-oz. maple syrup 2 Granny Smith apples 2 pears Directions: Dice apples and set aside. Mix all ingredients together in pitcher. Add apples. Let sit for at least 12 hours. Serve.
Speaking of all things autumnal, I just visited my old friend Joseph Maxian, owner of Sand Castle Winery in Erwinna, PA, (www.sandcastlewinery.com) and he poured me a warm glass of his Alpine Spice. The wine is made from Chardonnay, Sweet Riesling, and herbs and spices. And, to quote from texting jargon; OMG! Alpine Spice is very aromatic, with beautiful overtones of cinnamon, cloves, apple pie, and dried flower petals; a stunning sensual, experience. I am forever receiving newsletters from wineries informing me that a particular wine was rated 85 or 90 by a national

wine publication. So what? This is the opinion of a handful of dreadfully dull people sitting around tasting wines day in day out. Get a life! Why on earth do I care what points they have awarded a wine. Taste is subjective. That means my opinion is my opinion and may not be your opinion. Lets keep our opinions to ourselves and not be so intolerably pompous to assume we can speak for an entire nation of palates when we taste a wine. With this in mind, when enjoying our autumnal quaffs, or any seasons libations for that matter, avoid the bottles on the shelves which shout the praises from anonymous palates. Slip into your favorite wine store, find out which employee knows the most about their selection, tell them what youre looking for, and ask them if theyve tasted anything recently which comes close to what appeals to your palate. You do not have to speak to them in wine geek lingo, just tell them precisely what kind of taste suits your palate (sweet, fruity, semi-dry, full on dry, etc). This is the whole point of living in a democratic society. Your vote counts, and its a vote of confidence in, and acceptance of, whatever appeals to your taste. Wow! I feel better now that I have that off my chest. So lets move on. A couple of years ago, I had a splendid lunch organized by the marketing folks at Greg Norman Estates (yes, Greg Norman, the golfer) who wanted me to meet the winemaker Andrew Hales. The wines were so historic, I almost didnt notice the food accompanying them. Andrew is a soft spoken, passionate winemaker. One sip and you know you are in the company of a master craftsman. Normans own passion for wine inspired a range of wines with his name to reflect what the world would expect from his moniker on the label; Class! And believe me, theyve got it. I just tasted their 2010 Cabernet Merlot from the Limestone Coast in Australia. This delightful wine opens with vibrant aromas of blackberry, blueberry, brown spice, and light vanilla notes, while the palate is layered with hints of violets, clove and ripe, juicy berries. This wine is so smooth it makes George Clooney seem like a caffeine-wired buffoon. Its a palate caressing, smile across the face beauty! And at around $15 a bottle, its

ne of the most important things a restaurant can do is be consistent. One night its terrific and another night its very average (or even worse). You dont always know what is going to happen. Places like that just dont make it. I often find myself recommending a sometimes-overlooked restaurant simply because its consistent in every respect, and the food and the service is always first-class. I am talking about Phillips Seafood Restaurants. They are consistently outstanding each and every visit, and I have been to many of their locations in Atlantic City, Washington, DC, and Baltimore. I have come to believe that Phillips Seafood is one of those under-appreciated concepts and, perhaps, are looked upon by some as just another chain serving average food. This assumption could not be further from the truth. Their seafood is always first class, and their specialty (Marylandstyle crab cakes) are always delicious. Phillips Seafood Restaurants have been around since 1956 and they have 19 locations, all on the East Coast. Dont make the mistake of assuming they are just another chain. Maybe under-appreciated, but Phillips Seafood Restaurants are always a truly memorable experience.

Broadway Burger Raises the Bar

Atlantic City. Without a doubt, you will enjoy one of the great burgers of alltime and, if you look at their sign, notice that the word Burger is significantly bigger than the word Broadway. If you find a better burger anywhere, please let us know. The Broadway Burger Bar concept gets even more interesting when you consider the Broadway Bar unto itself. This bar is one of the great bars on the East Coast, and my advice is to experience your burger while sitting at their expansive bar. Enjoy their specialty cocktails, such as a Bloodytini; a Million Dollar Manhattan; or a Jersey Peach (featuring Stoli Peach Vodka). Their amazing beer menu includes a host of interesting craft beer selections, and some twenty beers on draft; not to mention Belgium, India Pale, Wheat, Pale, and Amber ales. You will find dark beers, specialty beers, and even domestic beers. And yes, there is a wellthought-out selection of wine by the glass and by the bottle. Burgers and a host of fabulous drinks in the excitement of the Tropicana you have to love it.

Road Ahead. Fear Behind. Power Within.

y first long distance bike ride was 36 miles through New Jerseys Pine Barrens. I couldnt walk up a flight of stairs for two days after, but finishing the ride was exhilarating. In 1997, after continuing to ride long distances, I signed up for a ride to raise funds for direct care for those living with HIV/AIDS. For three days in September, I joined over 3,000 people on a 275-mile road trip from Boston to New York. A few days after I sent in the application which included a promise to raise $1,500 for the cause I came across a quote from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: At the moment of commitment the entire universe conspires to assist you. It did. A gift of the hours of training and the solitude that comes with it gave me a veritable festival of life lessons. Ill share my top 10, but youll still have to put your butt in the seat to experience the power that exists inside of you: 1. When the wind is in your face, turn a corner. 2. If a corner is miles away, pretend youre Swiss cheese. 3. If you give up, the next time you try you may have to ride through a storm.
4. After you struggle and sweat to get to the top of what you perceive as an insurmountable mountain, youll look back and know it wasnt insurmountable after all. 5. Know that you have someone wholl ride directly in front of you to protect you from the wind. 6. Follow-through gets the ball in the cup. 7. If peddling gets too hard walk. Youll still get there. 8. Its so easy to peddle backward, but it only gets you where youve already been. 9. Dont let the sound of your own wheels make you crazy. (Apparently The Eagles were bike riders.) 10. Protect yourself. Wear a helmet. Being on a bike gave me the opportunity to see what most of us usually miss the beauty of a flower growing out of the asphalt; the wonder seeing one stray sock caught in the brush; a patch in the street that looks just like a bottle of Absolute; a gentleman riding 275 miles wearing a tutu; and knowing that if you can ride over the hills of Connecticut, you can do anything. n
