TruTrak

automated closed loop nonrotating steerable drilling system inclination from over 2 to less than 0.5 without creating doglegs

An independent power producer was drilling a geothermal well in the 101 mountains of Inyo County in Eastern California that tended to build inclination with rotary drilling. To successfully drill subsequent sections, a straight, vertical upper hole was necessary. Adding to the challenge of drilling production intervals was the potential loss of circulation when using standard water-based mud systems due to large formation fractures. While the standard practice of air drilling solves the mud loss problem, friction and drag increases. This high friction combined with a tortuous vertical upper borehole would increase casing wear and jeopardize the project. The customer had attempted to use a competitors

The TruTrak system reduced and maintained the inclination from over 2 to less than 0.5 throughout the whole interval, without Rosarito creating unwanted doglegs. Along with steering accuracy, the nonrotational aspects of the TruTrak system reduced wear on casing, drillpipe, and tubing, which saved well development costs.
