Reading Worksheet 1 Read the passage about a nurse called The Lady With The Lamp

Florence Nightingale, was the daughter of a wealthy landowner, William Nightingale. Florence wanted to become a nurse and her father gave her permission to train as one. Florence went to Germany where she studied to become a nurse. At that time a war broke out in Europe. This was called the Crimean war. British soldiers began going down with diseases like cholera and malaria. Florence Nightingale and her nurses were based in a hospital. Florence wasted no time in going to the place of war and attending to the soldiers. She was always at their side when they were in discomfort. At times she was found treating wounded soldiers from both sides while the battle was still going on. She hardly slept at night and the soldiers forgot their pain when they saw her coming towards them carrying a lamp. She was soon known as The lady with the lamp. In 1856 Florence Nightingale returned to England as a national heroine.
