into tbe 2014 edition....
The sheer number and quallty of
Derby's Peal Ale pubs means that
an entry ln the Gulde 8eer Gulde
ls somethlng to be prlzed and
qulte an achlevement lndeed as
wlth only about l5 places up for
grabs the quallty of the pubs ales
has to be conslstently hlgh over
the course of a year. Lnter two
Derby mlcrobrewerles, Danclng

transformed two run-down, back

and clders at reasonable prlces
and breathed llfe lnto the pub by

formula lt may be but one that so
many pubs, brewerles and pub

All of thls of course ls old hat to
the Derby 8rewlng Company
who are celebratlng once agaln
after a lean year ln the 20l3

Derby 8rewlng Company bought
and renovated the pub back ln

venture wlth Lverards 8rewery
and ever slnce the pub has gone
from strength to strength servlng
top quallty ale and food wlthln a

Derby 8rewlng Company beers ls
served alongslde rotatlng guest
beers and the pub ls very popular
wlth locals and vlsltors allke
(plctured - Paul & Trevor Harrls
from the Derby 8rewlng

Shardlow 8rewery ls back ln

The pub has not been ln the
gulde slnce 2008 but makes a
welcome return to the new
edltlon servlng a range of ales
from the Shardlow 8rewery plus
guests.
Purther lnto Derbyshlre, The
NeIson Arms ln the small hamlet
of Mlddleton near wlrksworth ls
after belng acqulred by Alan

range of real ales to the pub that
have proved popular. |t's now

Plnally 25 years on slnce lts last

the Miners Arms at rassington

A Real Ale galn
Por years, most of the pubs ln Plddlngs have
served Peal Ale, wlth the maln exceptlon belng
the CreenbiII 7avern, whlch hadn't seen Cask
Ale on lts bar slnce lt was owned by the long-
defunct Shlpstones 8rewery. All that changed ln
the last few months however, as the Greenhlll
underwent a tasteful refurblshment and, when
lt reopened, among the selectlon of drlnks were
Draught 8ass, whlch was very palatable when |
vlslted, and a couple of Peal Clders. Now run by
Poger and Sylvla, the Greenhlll ls a falrly large
three-roomed pub that hosts sports Tv and
Domlnoes. The cask menu wlll be two Peal Ales
and one Clder over the wlnter months, all
competltlvely prlced at 2.50 - 2.80 per plnt.
The openlng hours are l2 - ll every day, and
several buses pass by the Greenhlll, lncludlng
the 90, Hl Derby to Alfreton servlce and Pl.
There ls a large car park and outdoor seatlng.
A new beglnnlng
when Amber valley CAMPA was formed as a
sub-branch of Derby ln September 2008, the
Ceorge on
Lowes Hlll, Plpley. Desplte appearlng ln the Good
8eer Gulde only a couple of years ago, the pub
has not done well of late, and closed earller thls
year, wlth lts future looklng uncertaln. However,
all that changed when Marle and her partner
Matt took over ln August. The pub reopened
wlth a couple of Peal Ales, the Hartlngton |PA
was very good when | vlslted, wlth the posslblllty
of the range belng lncreased as buslness plcks
up. After all the trlals and trlbulatlons of the last
couple of years or so, lt's good to report that the
George ls gettlng back on lts feet agaln. The
openlng hours vary, wlth the pub belng open
from 6pm - l2 on Monday - wednesday, then 4
- l2 Thursday, 3-l2 Prlday and l2-l2 at the
weekend. The George ls a short walk from the 9's
Taphouse and walk to the left of that pub, about
300 yards down Lowes Hlll. The pub ls on the
rlght hand slde of the road and there ls a CAMPA
dlscount of l0 pence per plnt.

After three years at 8utterley, thls year found us

Lach of these pubs wlll be stocklng

have to stop drlnklng real clder
then! All you have to do to take

drlnk at least a half of clder of perry
and text the name of the pub, clder

Of course, October ls clder month
because lt ls the maln month for
clder maklng. The apple crop looks
good thls year and the pear crop ls
excellent, very good news for clder
makers after the dreadful summer
last year resulted ln a one of the
worst crops ever. There couldn't be
a better tlme to make some of your
own, even lf you haven't trled
result can be very satlsfylng. Get
yourself some apples / pears, don't
worry about the varletles except
that a blend generally works better
than all from one tree and you
need more eaters than cookers
(although some cookers or crab
kllograms of frult to make l lltre of
clder. The problem wlth small scale
clder maklng ls that even though
there ls plenty of [ulce ln the frult, lt
speclallst equlpment. The
extractlon process ls ln two stages,
mllllng and presslng. Mllllng ls [ust
reduclng the frult to a coarse pulp,
a food processor works lf you [ust
want to make a few lltres, for larger
quantltles | have seen lngenlous
devlces uslng garden shredders
and the llke! Presslng lnvolves
contalnlng the pulp ln somethlng
porous (usually boards and clothes)
to extract the [ulce. wlne presses
do the [ob, as do home-made
presses uslng screw threads or car
[acks! After that lts easy, put the
[ulce lnto a fermentlng vessel wlth
wlne yeast (optlonal, apples
contaln natural yeast and the [ulce
wlll ferment anyway). Patlence ls
needed whlle lt ferments, perhaps
2 months ln a warm place but
much longer (6 months) wlthout
external heat, and you have your

S

25 years later and real clder and

Our two branch area pubs of the year - 7be Smitb's
7avern, Ashbourne and 7be Sycamore, Parwlch -
have both been lncluded ln the new 20l4 Good
8eer Gulde and the branch has presented both
llcensees wlth a copy to mark thelr lncluslon.
8ranch surveys and nomlnatlons for the next pub
of the year competltlon begln ln earnest
throughout October and November, wlth a shortllst
belng drawn up ln December and [udglng/votlng
taklng place ln 1anuary 20l4.
The Coacb & Horses, Ashbourne re-opened on
August 22nd, now servlng food all day and wlth a
cholce of 4 ales on tap. The openlng nlght was a
llttle chaotlc, probably due to underestlmatlng the
lnterest ln the re-launch, so the beer cholce was
llmlted towards the end of the evenlng, but slgns
are promlslng.
|n stark contrast, 7be Wbite Hart, Ashbourne [ust
l00 yards away, has closed agaln after the new
management team brought ln was wlthdrawn. No
slgns yet of a re-openlng any tlme soon.
The Horns, Ashbourne ls due to change hands ln
mld-September and the new tenants have
promlsed a dramatlc revamp of the pub. Although
stlll tled to Marston's, they are promlslng to do all
they can for the beer scene ln the town.
The Creen Man, Ashbourne alteratlons contlnue,
wlth a pro[ected openlng of the shop to replace the
bar area ln early October. After that, the lnterest wlll
swltch to the courtyard area where a development
of retall areas ls slated to lnclude a pub or bar area
ln some form. Plngers crossed.
The Sycamore at Parwlch has recently taken
dellvery of the new season's, Poblnsons Old Tom.
The Yew 7ree at Ldnaston closed ln August but
there has been some lnterest so hopefully lt mlght
re-open agaln.

On Sunday 29th September our soclal secretary,
Kelth Palmer, suggested and organlsed a 9-mlle
Ashbourne by way of 4 lntermedlate vlllage pub
deep valleys, country lanes and a short blt of the
A52...the weather was spectacularly warm and
sunny, a perfect |ndlan summer's day. Plve of us,
and two unsuspectlng dogs thls tlme, assembled at
7be RoyaI Dak at Hanging ridge, vla roadslde
paths, arrlvlng [ust before mldday. The cholce
Prlde. Unfortunately, nelther beer was ln good
condltlon, although both barrels were then
changed lmmedlately we commented on them.
we walked on vla the rlverslde and across a couple
where the sole cholce was Pedlgree, albelt a very
well-kept plnt and one whlch Dave sald rlvalled hls
own for quallty - pralse lndeed! Thls stop slgnalled
the polnt at whlch the walk became much, much
harder as we made for Stanton vla a very steep and
long uphlll cllmb, then a drop lnto and out of a
steep-slded valley, followed by a long drag across
farmland and an extremely muddy patch by a stlle,
whlch only myself and Dave were foollsh enough
to negotlate, whllst the others cheated by taklng an
ad[acent (dry) farm gate.
Plnally emerglng at Stanton vlllage, thls would have
been a natural polnt for another break, but there
hasn't been a pub ln Stanton for many a long year,
so we had to push on vla a gentle green lane, but
then another steep-slded valley followed by a long
steady cllmb up to Swlnscoe - the hlghest polnt of
the walk and some stunnlng vlstas to be en[oyed -
Dog & Partridge,
or two from Peakstones Pock. Pegrettably, the
Peakstones Pock beers were only moderately
drlnkable.
Prom there, thankfully, the rest of the walk was
Mapleton vlllage and arrlved at the Dkeover Arms,
wlth a decent cholce of 4 local ales. would you
to vlnegar (| forgot to note lt down and can't recall
lt now, but lt wasn't the brewery's fault, so perhaps
[ust as well not to put thelr name to lt) and lt had to
be swlftly substltuted for a thoroughly decent plnt
of wlncle Pambler, whllst others en[oyed Peak Ales
The last leg saw us cllmb the hlll out of Mapleton,
taklng ln yet more stunnlng vlews of Thorpe Cloud
and the surroundlng hllls, before we crested the
rldge across the caravan park and falrly sprlnted
down hlll to [oln the Tlsslngton Trall for the last half
tunnel. Our arrlval back at the Smitb's 7avern at
[ust after 5.30pm saw an opportunlty to sample
Marston's Old Lmplre, a very decent strong ale
guaranteed to ensure that, lf not tlred after all that
exertlon, we would soon be snoozlng deeply.
Thanks agaln to Kelth for selectlng and plannlng
the route - the next walk wlll posslbly be ln late
October/early November, detalls to follow.

onsiderl Dear 7oper, a recent autumnaI evening, wbereon I
ventured into a city centre bosteIry witb tbe intention of
meeting up witb an oId acquaintance of mine, wbo bad agreed
to bring aIong a vintage CAMRA pubIication, wbicb be bad
been promising, for some time, to Iend to me. As tbe evening
was coId and wet, be bad wiseIy pIaced tbe pubIication witbin
name of one of tbe big supermarket cbains. 7bis IittIe episode
niceIy iIIustrates, just bow usefuI pIastic carrier-bags can
continue to be once you've emptied your groceries from tbem.
Indeed, Dear 7oper, I wouId venture to suggest tbat tbey are
one of tbe most usefuI tbings on tbe pIanetl 7bey can, and are,
used over and over again for a variety of purposes, sucb as,
keeping bicycIe seats dry wbist tbeir owners are inside pubs
on wet evenings, taking
oId cIotbes to cbarity
sbops, and I've even
seen bikers putting
tbem on over tbeir
muddy boots to avoid
Ieaving a muddy traiI
of some ruraI bosteIry.
And as tbey are made
from a by-product of
tbe oiI industry, tbe
manufacturing costs
are minimaI, enabIing
supermarkets to give
tbem away, secure in
tbe knowIedge, tbat
witb tbe store's name
printed on tbe bags,
tbeir customers wiII be
waIking around advertising tbe pIace for freel It's a win, win,
situationl You wouId tbink tbat tbe bumbIe pIastic carrier-bag
wouId be ceIebrated as one of tbe greatest acbievements of
our modern age, a great boon to bumanity, ricb and poor aIike
- wbo in tbeir rigbt mind couId despise tbem! - nter our
mind boggIingIy stupid poIiticaI cIassl
Uslng the lame excuse that some antl-soclal scumbags have
allowed certaln plastlc bags to become lltter, our breathtaklngly
lnept polltlcal class, no doubt egged on by llttle green men (and
women) who desplse anythlng remotely connected wlth the oll
lndustry, have declded to punlsh all of us for the slns of the few by
lntroduclng the "8ag Tax"! |n other words, shops wlll be compelled
to charge us for plastlc carrler-bags. | for one hate lltter louts and
am of the oplnlon that the punlshments meted out to them are
derlsory, however, anyone who ls deluded enough to entertaln the
notlon that a tax on plastlc carrler-bags (whlch are often used for
gatherlng up lltter, such as empty drlnks cans and dog excrement)
ls golng to stop knuckle-draggers throwlng lltter around, ls
beyond havlng any senslble dlalogue wlth, and ls probably a
polltlclan, or one of thelr
polltlcally correct hangers on.
our slnklng polltlcal class, ln a
half-hearted attempt to tackle
late-nlght, aggresslve
drunkards, (they could start
by closlng the House of
Commons bars) ls the
lntroductlon of so-called
"Drunk Tanks", whlch are to be
run by prlvate companles.
Presumably those of our
leadlng pubco's, who run the
sort of establlshments
whereln most of the problem
drlnkers get fuelled up on
chemlcal lagers and rotgut
clders, wlll take full advantage
of thls lucratlve, state-funded buslness opportunlty, and get even
rlcher by settlng aslde deslgnated rooms ln thelr varlous outlets as
"Drunk Tanks", thereby keeplng the whole process of gettlng the
ldlots drunk on overprlced drlnks and then punlshlng them for lt,
under one roof.
| wonder lf all of thls nonsense wlll be funded by the "8ag Tax"!
Conslder that, Dear Toper! D.7.
