The town of Valask Mezi sits on the riverbanks of the Ronovsk Beva and its confluence with the Beva Vsetnsk. The first written notice about the town is from the end of 13th century. Thanks to its good geographical position the town became the residence of the district council by the mid 19th century and several grammar schools were established there. Amongst the most famous were the Gymnasium from 1871, the Vocation School for Woodworking from 1874, the teacher training-college and the first girls only gymnasium in Moravia. In 1908, the painter Rudolf Schlattauer founded a tapestry school and in 1914 the Municipal Institution for the Education of Deaf-Mute Children was opened. These schools educated students from across the Wallachian region, which increased the importance of the town and subsequently also influenced the publishing of postcards. The first lithographic postcards combined with those that came after allow us to observe the town and its transformations as in a picture gallery. Since 1881 Mr. Frantiek Vank had a lithographic printer in Valask Mezi and using this he printed the first known postcard of the town. The postcards were later printed by other owners of Vanks printer, such as the Chrastina brothers. These were printed mainly by book printingmethods using photos from the local photographer Otokar rtek. Several secession postcards of the town were printed at the turn of century by J. Slovk, a printer from the town of Krom. However, the majority of the postcards were published by a merchant called Josef Haas, a bookbinder and stationer Leopold Heinzl and later by the bookseller, Vclav Jeremi. Most of the postcards portray the town square, however, often illustrated are also the churches and the schools. Less common and therefore precious are the postcards from the other parts of the town, which often used to be independent villages and that were later joined to the town in the second half of the 20th century. Under the editorship of Josef Fabin, in 1992 and 1996 the Cultural Institution in the town of Valask Mezi published the paperback books, Valask Mezi in Old Postcards and also Changes of Valask Mezi on Postcards containing a part of Jindich Janoueks collection. In addition, in 1999 a further book titled Old Postcards of Valask Mezi and Its Surroundings was published containing postcards collected by Frantiek Baruch. The first hardback book containing postcards of the town was published in 2007, when the editor together with several collectors issued the publication Greetings from Valask Mezi. Now a new edition is being brought to you, called Valask Mezi in a Mirror of the Times, where the postcards are complemented by series of photographs. Josef Fabin

Before we began working on this book of postcards from Valask Mezi we had to make several decisions; how comprehensive the book should be, how would we deal with street names which have often changed over time, in what sequence to show the postcards and how to commence. In the end we agreed on a total of one hundred and sixty pages of pictures and text, current street names are shown and complemented with older or original names where necessary, and that the book begins with the composite postcards. Such composite formats have not lost their popularity up to this date and also the oldest lithographic photograph of the town was of this style. It was printed by Frantiek Vank in 1896, firstly only using two colours, however one year later it was published as a tinted postcard.

The next two lithographic postcards were published in 1898 in Nov Jin. The difference is not just that one has Czech whilst the other German text, but also that the German copy has the picture of the Czech gymnasium replaced by photo of a German casino.

V roce 1899 vydali sv pohlednice dal vydavatel. Tu horn pan Josef Haas, kter byl na potku dvactho stolet nejpilnjm vydavatelem pohlednic, a tu doln brati Chrastinov, kte na ni dali i svou tiskrnu na nmst. More editors published their photographs in 1899. The top one is by Mr. Josef Haas, who was the most diligent postcard publisher at the beginning of 20th century. The Chrastina brothers, who used their printer in the town square, published the bottom postcard.

Another hard-working producer of postcards of Valask Mezi was for many years a publisher from the town of Krom, Jindich Slovk. Here are two of his first postcards of the town from the end of 19th century. It is pleasure to look at these even today.

Nkter pohlednice tak zdobili tiskai rznmi znaky. Horn, se znakem Valaskho Mezi, pochz z roku 1900, doln, se znakem Valaskho Mezi a Moravy a s relifnmi ratolestmi, pochz z roku 1904. The publishers sometimes ornamented their postcards with various emblems. The top postcard was decorated with a symbol of Valask Mezi and originates from 1900. The bottom postcard, with a symbol of Valask Mezi, Moravia and an embossed olive-branch, originates in 1904.

Horn pohlednici s obrzky nmst a okresnho adu vydal Josef Haas, doln pozdrav z Krsna, s obrzky krsensk radnice, Mostn ulice a krsensk aleje T. J. Popelka. Josef Haas printed the top postcard with pictures of the town square and the District Authority. The publisher T. J. Popelka produced the bottom postcard from Krsno, with pictures of the local town hall, Mostn Street and the Krsno alley.

Dal dv hezk oknkov pohlednice msta jsou z let 1909 a 1910. Another two pretty composite postcards of the town are from 1909 and 1910. The top includes six pictures of the old Valask Mezi whilst the bottom comprises of four pictures from the old, and during those times, the independent town Krsno.

Shortly after the First World War in 1918, another composite postcard was issued. One year later an additional interesting postcard with a central picture of the town square, motives from town Valask Mezi on the left, motives from town Krsno on the right and couple of Wallachians in the middle was also published. Josef Haas produced both of these postcards.

On the composite postcard from 1920, in the top left corner is the hearing disability school, which became a dominant feature of the town and subsequently many published postcards. There were various types printed, for example, anniversary editions, such as the one to celebrate the establishment of the republic by Frantiek Zetek.

These two postcards from 1938 and 1939 show many images. The first postcard of the town square in Valask Mezi was published by Schwidernoch in Vienna, and shows the misspelling of the word nmst (town square). Josef Haas published a similar view onto the north west corner of the square in 1899.

We do not have many postcards from the one time independent villages that are today part of the town because these were not often published. Actually the numbers of postcards published by such villages were directly dependent on whether there were any taverns or businesses, which published postcards at their own costs. The commemoration postcards published by the photographer ob to celebrate the blessing of a chapel in Kotlina in 1945 are precious exceptions.

How the tavern looked a few years later is shown on this composite postcard from 1920. the second shows the Perovsk Tavern/Perov Hotel at the end of its life in 1983. Here we can see a tennis court and an alcove in the castle park and also a view onto the rear section of the castle before its reconstruction. We can also clearly see one of the former lanterns.

The summer cinema, which was build in the 1960s is now undoubtedly a part of the parks history. On the top photograph we can see how the cinema looked shortly after its completion and the bottom picture demonstrates audience of a festival called the Valask palek.

130

131

This postcard does not belong to the castle but instead the museum that has resided there since the war. It contained a Wallachian room which was part of an exhibition in the 1930s. The Church of Saint Trinity with its collection of statues also belongs to the museum today.

These two postcards show the Dlnick House located on Hbitovn Street. One traditional view, on a photograph by Mr. oba from 1937 and one unusual, taken from the Obora, which nicely illustrates the back side of the house and shows a gym and stage.

132

133

Dv fotografie z Hranick ulice. Here are two photographs from the Hranick Street. On the first is the Mr Zruneks butchery and the second shows a carrier with rabbit skins, which is heading into the Mr Janyeks factory.

No doln mj pohebn prvod starou benznovou pumpu na Hbitovn ulici. Ke hbitovu je to u jen pr krok. The top photograph illustrates Schlattauerova Street in the 1950s. The bottom picture depicts a funeral procession moving through the old pentrol station on Hbitovn Street, which is very close to the cemetery.

134

135

There is a modern chapel on the burial-ground and also many beautiful gravestones. Some of them, as well as the one on our photograph, has been moved here after the abolishment of the cemetery in the Krlova Street.

The mortuary in the Jewish cemetery as well as several graves were neglected in the 1950s as there was nobody to take care of them. The mortuary was later redeveloped into a ceremonial hall, which is still in use today.

136

137

There was a monument build on the cemetery in memory of the killed soldiers. This was achieved by cooperation with the Turkish embassy in Prague. There is a collective grave for 265 soldiers of different nationalities, who died in this town during the First World War.

The Jewish graves, or at least what is left of them, were concentrated in one section of the burial ground and are now taken care of by the cemetery groundsman.

138

139

Also the German soldiers who died during the Second World War found their resting place in the local cemetery. As is written on the memorial plate their fate evokes reconciliation.

Lets now leave the burial-ground and move onto the airport. This was build immediately after the Second World War, the foundation-stone was laid on 16th September 1945 and for many of us this was where we took off the ground for the first time. It was not a busy airport though so the cows were happily feeding there as well.

Vrtnice podniku DEZA, vlastn tehdy n.p. Urxovy zvody, na pohlednici z roku 1970. A pohled na arel tovrny s obc Bynina v pozad. Po letiti u nen ani pamtky. On this postcard from 1970 we can see the gatehouse into the DEZA Enterprice, which was formerly state owned and called Urxovy zvody. And yet another view onto the factory with a village called Bynina in the backround. There is now no sign of the airport.

Pohled na jednu z destilanch kolon dokazuje, e i technika me bt fotogenick. Z nedalek Byniny mnoho pohlednic nemme. This view depicting a distilling pipe proves that even technology can be photogenic. There are not many postcards of the nearby village Bynina, however, this postcard shows not only the overall view of the village but also a tavern, school and a shop.

142

143

Pohled na Krsno z Junkova s ndram vlevo dole na pohlednici z roku 1940 a jedin pohled na novou ndran budovu, kter jsme zskali v archivu. At the bottom left of this postcard from 1940 is shown a view onto the town of Krsno taken from the Junkov. There is also a railway station and the only postcard illustrating the new station building that we managed to obtain from an archive.

Hezk pohlednice starho krsenskho ndra v roce 1918 a dal pohlednice z opan strany, kterou vydal J. T. Popelka a vytiskli md a Admek v Perov. This is a nice postcard of the old Krsno station from 1918. Another postcard taken from the opposite side was published by J. T. Popolka and printed by md and Admek in the town Perov.

144

145

The Ndran Street used to be enclosed by wooden fence, which confined not only the train station but also the timber mill on the other side of the road.

The Butkv House, which disappeared during a redevelopment, used to stand where Kin Street meets Mostn Street. The bottom photograph illustrates how a Street Ulika looked in 1980.

146

147

Svrkova ulice podl parku v roce 1920. This photograph from 1920 depicts the Svrkova Street, which runs along the park. The interesting point on the bottom picture is not really the exercising people, but the building in the top left corner. That is the Jewish Synagogue, the most important building in on Vodn Street.

This is the only close-up picture of the synagogue and unfortunately it does not look its best after one of the pogroms at the turn of 19th and 20th century. However, this photograph depicting the synagogues interior looks fine.

148

149

Here is another view from Vodn Street, which depicts the home of the director of the church choir, Mr. Holeovsk from 1911. One more view of the same street, this is how it looked before 1990.

However, Krsno is very different today. On the postcard from 1978 is a view of Kin Street and over the River Beva are portrayed the old bricked apartment blocks. However, on another postcard from the same year we can see concrete slab apartment blocks on Brat apk Street.

150

151

This postcard from three years before shows Seifertova Street. We can see not only the housing blocks but also a nursery school. The housing apartment blocks are illustrated on another postcard of the Kin Street.

This postcard from 1979 shows the Apollo Hotel. The other postcard from 1986 depicts the Kin Primary School which is across the road.

152

153

Not too many years ago you could use the roof terrace in Hotel Apollo and observe the town from a different perspective. And even more recently you could still see these trees on Kin Street.

Vechny tyi nsledujc pohlednice pochzej z roku 1976. The apartment blocks on these postcards are also from Krsno but in a different housing development called Pod Oborou. The following four postcards are all from 1976.

154

155

The top postcard differs from the others as it depicts the family houses on a junction of Svrkova and Seifertova Streets which were not demolished when the apartment blocks were built. The following postcard portrays Zaovsk Street filled by slab apartment blocks.

Lets now go further back in time. The top postcard is a greeting from Valask Mezi from 1902 with pictures depicting the Vrbensk and Zaovsk Streets. The bottom is a view onto Zaovsk Street from 1905.

156

157

The Zaovsk Street was the second busiest street in Krsno, after the Masarykova Street so lets look at it in more detail. The top postcard shows the view from this street into the church and the bottom picture depicts Mr umns butchery.

This is an interesting photograph with a funeral procession on the Zaovsk Street and also with restaurant U Stank, inside are the employees of Mr. Hansls Funeral House. All we can see though is the first class funeral car.

158

159

This is a photograph from later date where we can see the whole restaurant. Opposite, where is these days the entrance to the bus station, used to be Mr. Janis shop.

Zaovsk se rozdvojovala, jeden konec smoval k radnici a druh k trnici. Uprosted stla cukrrna pana Janouka, pozdji vinrna Monika. Nkdy kolem roku 1950 a potom 1960 se Zaovskou ulic jel Zvod mru. The Zaovsk Street forks off into two, with one section leading towards the town hall whilst the other takes us towards the market. In the middle used to be Mr. Janoueks confectionery, later transformed into wine-bar Monika. Sometimes around 1950 and also later around 1960 a bike race called the Peace Race went through Zaovsk Street.

160

161

U trnice konila Zaovsk restaurac U Sttezskch zvanou Pstav. At the end of the Zaovsk Street used to be located restaurant called U Sttezskch , also known as Pstav. Around 1980 it was demolished and replaced by small car mechanic called Mototechna.

And yet another photograph from the Zaovsk Street before we head with the carriage on the bottom picture into the neighbouring Vrbensk Street.

162

163

On this top photograph is the Vrbensk Street in the first half of the last century and the bottom picture represents the same view at the end of the last century, shortly before it was demolished to give way to an indoor swimming pool. The swimming pool now stands somewhere completely different though.

Historick fotografie z roku 1945 zachycuje ruskou jzn hldku ve Vrbensk ulici. This is a historical photograph from 1945, which portrays a Russion touring patrol in Vrbensk Street. On the bottom photograph is the house of the potter Mr. Hauser, who used to live and work on Vrbensk Street.

164

165

V prostoru u kaple Svatho Rocha si postavil hezk dm architekt Kupka. The architekt Kupka built a nice home in a space by St. Rochs Chapel. We finish our visit of Vrbensk Street with a view onto chapelry, which already had to be repaired twice since 1990.

Pouze se nemodernizuje a ek Between the Zaovsk and Vrbensk Street is a bus station. There have been talks about moving it elsewhere for a long time, but it still remains at the same location and unmodernised whilst awaiting a decision on whether to move it or not.

166

167

The north side is dominated by the Heltn hill upon which is a memorial for the victims of the World Wars. The memorial was designed by the architects Msteck and Hlav. However, you will no longer see the steam train running along its hillslope.

At the location Pod Oborou used to be a fish pond. However, today you would find there is a traffic training ground for bicycles. On the bottom picture we can see the fish pond and fishermen. In the backround is a house, which used to belong to the pond. This house has remained there until today.

168

169

Pod Oborou postavila spoitelna pro sttn zamstnance kolem roku 1930 celou ulici novch domk. Zajmav doln fotografie ukazuje vystn ulice Potky do Zaovsk ulice ped Teslou. Around 1930 in the location Pod Oborou, the Czech Bank built a whole street with new houses for their employees. An interesting bottom photograph portrays the end of Street Potky and the start of the Zaovsk Street in front of the Tesla factory.

Tuto vydala krhovsk obchodnice Karla Broov. Before we move from Krsno to explore the village of Krhov we pass husk park where resided a popular restaurant in 1900. Despite the glassworks factory being located in Krsno, many residents of the village Krhov endorsed it as theirs and put its pictures onto the postcards of their village. This one was published by a local businesswoman Karla Broov.

170

171

Another postcard from Krhov showing the glassworks factory was published by Josef Coufal in 1907. On the bottom is a Greeting from Krhov, which was published around 1910 and where the glassworks is not depicted. Instead it portrays the village square, chapel, school and the Jehlin Restaurant.

172

173

Dv oknkov pohlednice Krhov, prvn z roku 1925 a druh z roku 1930. Ob vydal pan Josef Coufal, nejpilnj vydavatel krhovskch pohlednic. Another two composite postcards from Krhov, first from 1925 and the second from 1930. Both postcards were published by Josef Coufal, who was the most diligent publisher of postcards with motives from Krhov.

From all the villages that later joined Valask Mezi, Krhov has the richest postcard history. For example, this memorial for the victims of the war with the bust of the president T. G. Masaryk was in the local park until 1935 when the postcard was published. However during the war the bust had to be hidden. After the war the bust returned to its original place, however, it was then removed by the regime never to be found again. It was therefore replaced by a new bust by sculpturer petk.
174 175

Dv zajmav pohlednice restaurace Jehlin z roku 1930. These two interesting postcards show the Jehlin Restaurant in 1930. The first postcard portrays a view onto the restaurant from the Heltn hill and a view of the entrance to the restaurant. On the second postcards is the same view amplified by drawings to attract visitors.

Jedna z mla pohlednic Hrachovce. This is one of very few postcards of the village Hrachovec. It shows a family house of a local countryman, the cardinal Frantiek Bauer. Before we leave Hrachovec lets have a look at this postcard from 1980, which is showing the old lido. The oldest known postcard, from the end of 19th century, shows what during those days used to be a one storey high building that served as a boarding house for Christian children located on erotnova Street. The second postcard shows the castle and the boarding house once the building was raised by another storey in 1899.

178

A postcard published by Otokar rtek in 1902, shows not just the boarding house but also the castle (today youth housing) and the Mansk Court on the opposite side of the road. Another postcard from 1903 illustrates the interior.

Our last photograph of the boarding house is also by Otokar rtek and we can see the extension in 1940, which is how it looks today. The other postcard is very unique as it shows the inside of the Mansk Court.
