Introduction of Company
Pump Aid is an international water and sanitation charity based in Africa and the UK. The charity establishes sustainable supplies of clean water and mechanisms to create safer sanitation, using innovative yet simple technologies that can be locally maintained. Pump Aid works to improve health and support the local agriculture and economies. Rural community members can utilise the clean water source for drinking, washing, and irrigationwhich can lead to generating income from their vegetable crops. As of 2010, Pump Aid had offices in Zimbabwe, Malawi, Liberia, and London, and employed more than 200 people, most of whom are national staff in Zimbabwe and Malawi trained in welldigging and water-pump installation. The charity's 2010 turnover was 3,600,000 pounds sterling.

Elephant Pump
Elephant pump is a rope pump designed by Pump Aid. It can be used for wells of depths of up to 30m. Its design is simple and communities are able to maintain the pumps after short training. The pump components are built in local workshops and using local workforce, but it appears that the communities that are supposed to use Elephant pumps are not sufficiently involved in the construction phase of the project, and thus do not develop sufficient sense of ownership. Moreover, Pump Aid marks the pumps with a logo of a donor, which creates a belief among villagers, that it is the donor who should take care of the pump. What is the problem the project is addressing? In Malawi diarrheal disease is the 3rd biggest killer of young children. The impact of diarrheal disease on children is greater than the combined impact of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. An infant born in Sub-Saharan Africa is 520 times more likely to die from disease than a child born in the United States or Europe - all because of a lack of clean water. This project will improve the health of up to 100 people in rural Malawi by providing clean and safe water for the community.

How will this project solve the problem? This project will install an Elephant Pump in a rural community. The project also includes the training of community members in pump operation and maintenance to ensure that once Pump Aid has left, the community members themselves have the knowledge and the ability to maintain their Elephant Pump for many years. The community also receives hygiene and sanitation training as part of the project, which further contributes to improving the community's health.

What is the potential long-term impact of this project? This project will provide a rural community with reliable access to clean water, improving people's health. By providing access to clean and safe water an improvement in water quality and quantity contributes to a 15-25% reduction of childhood deaths caused by diarrhea having access to a water pump can greatly reduce distance walked and time spent by women and girls fetching water. It helps reduce violence against women, as well as giving them more time for education and economic activities.

Results
By 2008, over 4000 Elephant Pumps had been built and these supplied clean water to over 1 million people across Zimbabwe and Malawi. About 80 Elephant Pumps were built each month and each pump provided water to around 250 people. In 2008, over 1,300 pumps were installed, improving water access for over 345,000 people...

Social Impact
According to experts, the Elephant Pump project had made a significant social impact by contributing to an improvement in education, food, and clothing of the people in rural Africa. The project brought about positive implications with respect to saving on time and labor, gender equality, quality, and quantity of water

Facts
Train other NGOs to implement similar program so that many other people can get clear water Establish 7650 nutrition guidance Implement a program to plant 1425000 productive tree so that people can do trade Install 32,000 pumps so that max people can get clean water Provide clear water to 9 million people

PROBLEMS OF ELEPHANT WATER PUMP:

1) Low Life Span:

2) Installation Cost: 3) Low Sucking Capacity 4) High Cost of Maintaining: 5) Low Pumping depth Comparatively 6) Hard Labor Work and wet thread rope

Analysis Of Problem
1) Low Life Span: Elephant pump usually installed in Africa and Maldives are not reliable for the long time use as they are made from cheap and local material and hardware. As you can see after few time periods, it expiry starts 2) Installation Cost: The installation cost is 250 euro, yet the material and hardware used are not included in the bill. Whereas other pumps like rope pumps are cheap in installation, the installation of rope pump costs about $150 to $200. 3) Low Sucking Capacity: When we compare elephant pump with other pumps, we find that its water sucking capacity from the underground storage of water is lower than the other pumps. Lets compare it with rope pump. Rope pump sucks about 70 liters water by using 5meter deep installed pipe, whereas elephant pump sucks about 1 liter per second at 20m head 4) High Cost of Maintaining: Maintaining pumps cheaply is also a tough task for organizations to rodeo with others in market place. Elephant pump costs more than other famous pumps around the globe. Rope pump costs $20 to $30 a year, whereas elephant pump costs almost $40 to $50 a year because of its critical huge design and because of complicated large hardware used in it. 5) Low Pumping depth Comparatively: Elephant pump is Suitable for extraction from depths of up to 30 meters whereas pumping depth of rope pump is 35 meters with one handle, 60 meters with 2 handles and 100 meters if run by machine.

Solution Of Problem
1) SOLUTION: To increase the life span of elephant pump instead of cheap material, good quality of material should be used. Means good and economic material should be used. Like bricks made in furnace. Natural sand, cement and pebbles must be used in large quantity to enhance the quality of concrete. By this water will not be polluted and its wall will not leak water. As you can see in image its walls are leaking water. 2) SOLUTION: To increase the life span of elephant pump instead of cheap material, good quality of material should be used. The width of output pipe should also be increased. 4) SOLUTION: Be designing it more efficiently and by using good economical material in reasonable quantity, its making and maintaining cost can be minimized easily. As I said earlier SMALLER DESIGN + LESS HARDWARE USED = LOW COST OVERALL. Wheel and axle used in it must be greased on daily basis for protecting it from rust.

MAJOR PROBLEM
Hard Labor Work and wet thread rope: Wheel and axle is a simple machine which is installed in the internal structure of the elephant pump; the thread is somehow fixed in the wheel so that axle can be rotated in order to fetch water. A person is always required to keep the water coming out from pump, as the wheel runs inside the water so it is very tough task for the person to keep the axle rotating. As the rope is made up of thread, so it becomes wet and absorbs water in it therefore within 4 to 6 months, rope expires. PICS OF INTERNAL STRUCTURE AND ROPE GETTING WET IN WATER AND BECOMING WEAKER AND WEAKER EVERY SECOND.

RECOMMENDATION FOR SOLUTION

To reduce the hard labor work, its internal structure must be redesigned such that it will face minimal friction, because due to friction between rope pistons and wheel the labor effort increases to enhance the life of rope, its material should be changed. Usually rope which is used made up of thread whose life span is very low while working in water. Rope of optical fiber must be used to become free from the problem of rope breaking. I do agree that optical fiber is a wire but it can be used as rope also. In the beginning of internet, its were under sea bed and those were made up of optical fiber. It is obvious that it will increase the expense of each pump but it will increase the life span and therefore profit as well. I am recommending this solution because I believe WHEN YOU INCREASE THE QUALITY, YOUR PROFIT INCRESES. Cover the rope of thread with plastic, by this friction will be minimized and rope will not be affected more than before. This method is cheap but not highly appreciated.
