Dear Passengers,
Its rare to hear of cargo handling in connection with Malv since we primarily concentrate on carrying passengers. Nevertheless, right now it might be worth paying some attention to this lesser known activity, firstly because Malvs cargo business produces an annual profit of more than half a billion forints, and secondly since Budapest Airport, after completion of its new passenger hall SkyCourt, has begun another, large-scale development the construction of Cargo City. Malv, occupying more than 8000 square metres, will be one of the main leaseholders of this expansive air cargo logistics centre. Malv Cargo is scheduled to start operating at its new base on 1 January 2013. The modern centre being built in the immediate vicinity of the airport represents significant advantages for the airlines cargo and mail handling activities. As a consequence of the more advantageous location and thanks to simplified logistics processes, not only will rental fees be reduced but also operational costs. The city centre can be reached from the airport in a number of ways: 1. Airport Minibus minibuses from the airport to any destination in Budapest (return journey possible). Single tickets: 11 euros for one, 17 euros for two. 2. Ftaxi contracted partner of Budapest Airport. Find the taxis and external desk at the airport terminal arrivals. 3. Public transport airport bus 200E takes passengers to the Kbnya-Kispest underground terminal, from where trains go to the centre. Aria evening

Two remarkable artists are meeting on the stage of the Bla Bartk National Concert Hall to perform a selection of the finest opera arias and duets. Ildik Komlsi rarely performs in Hungary, so this concert an exceptional treat. With 150 performances to her credit most likely a world record no one has sung the lead female role in Bartks Bluebeards Castle, the best-known Hungarian-language opera, more than her. Under the direction of Franco Zeffirelli, the Arena di Verona has based its productions of Carmen on Komlsi as Jos Curas partner since 2004. She has sung the role of Amneris in Verdis Aida not only in Budapest but in Munich, Berlin and Milans La Scala. She has also appeared in several productions in the New York Metropolitan Opera, including the season-opening performance of Salome in autumn 2008, and has given memorable renditions of Busonis rarely heard Turandot in Seville. Marcello Giordani also has strong ties with the Metropolitan where he is a principle singer.

Bizottsg Exhibition
From September works of art by members of the band Bizottsg (Committee) who evolved from Szentendres Lajos Vajda Studio are being presented in the Kunsthalle where the prominent alternative band of the 80s is preparing a real surprise. The group of self-taught artists broke up before playing music became a routine or business. They created freely without any outside force in a world where freedom was mostly utilised as an ideological slogan. Their activity not only produced music but art events in the original sense of the term. The exhibition is presenting a retrospective of those.

programajnl Virtual reality on stage at the Hungarian State Opera House

The Hungarian State Opera House is preparing for a world premiere. On 7, 9 and 10 September an opera and ballet production, 3D Live Live, is being staged whereby the live performance is fused with 3D technology. The Budapest audience will wear 3D glasses to watch a ballet performance of Bartks The Duke Bluebeards Castle and Ravels Bolero. The part of Judith in the opera performance is being played by one of todays most celebrated mezzosopranos of international opera, Ildik Komlsi, who first suggested the production. The 3D animation designer, Andrew Quinn, is a computer specialist who has worked on the films Matrix, Dark City and Tomb Raider.

In focus during the 4-day Jazzforum Budapest, now entering its 9th year, will be Poland, which has taken over the EU presidency from Hungary. Making an appearance at the opening concert will be 25-year-old Polish pianist Pawel Kaczmarczyk, who with his groups two discs won the European jazz magazine Jazz Forums Album of the Year award. The second half of the evening will witness a special meeting of two musical worlds seemingly distant from each other. On stage will be the international formation Reggae Septet with their surprising fusion and unique arrangements of jazz and reggae.

Autumn at the bistro

Autumn slowly approaches Budapest and perhaps the weather still has some pleasantly warm, sunny days up its sleeve for September, after the sparse hot spells of summer. These September days also have a certain feeling of passing away, so at such a time its good to have something permanent nearby. A place which you can surely rely on when bitter-sweet gloom takes over; where seasons may come and go; it may rain or shine but theres always a couple of friends; where the waiter greets you as an acquaintance and an array of bustling folk fills the place. Then its good to swish through the carpet of fallen leaves and sit in your favourite bistro for a wine spritzer or lemonade with basil. The rest will just happen. As the freshly baked crispy bread is served with salty butter for an appetizer to customers at the next table and some steaming beef with marrow arrives elsewhere, you also order. Just a little for the sake of company. In order to stay longer. A morsel of duck liver terrine with toasted sweet bread has never harmed anyone. A few scoops of ice-cream would also be gratifying. Three scoops chilli and elderflower, passion-fruit and ginger. In the first week of September the Palace of Arts is holding its customary autumn Mahler Festival, which since 2005 has paid respects to the noted composer and conductor, Gustav Mahler, a former director of the Hungarian Royal Opera House. The maestro only spent the years 1889-1891 in the post, yet he established one of the best quality opera companies in contemporary Europe and ever since his activity in Budapest has been regarded as marking two bright years of classical music in Hungary. On 9, 10 and 11 September baritone Wolfgang Holzmair, one of most adept interpreters of Mahlers songs, is singing at the Budapest Festival Orchestras concert. On 13 September the Festival Theatre is hosting the composers chamber music when baritone Markus Werba, who has had great success in several opera houses of the world, performs in a joint concert featuring Gbor Csalog and Andrs Kemenes. The piano arrangement for four hands of Mahlers Symphony No. 4 can also be heard at the concert.

The international World Press Photo jury chose a picture taken by South African photographer Jodi Bieber as the best press photo of last year. It shows a young Afghan woman, Bibi Aisa, maimed by her family. The 18-yearold lived in Afghanistans Uruzgan province and she fled from her husband due to his violence. One night a group of Taliban arrived and at the command of their leader she was held down while her husband cut off her ears and nose. Breaking all records, a total of 108,059 images by 5,847 photographers from 125 countries were entered for the contest. The majority would arguably fit the not under 18 viewing classification. However, in addition to images of the worlds cruel brutality there are many artistic photographs providing an aesthetic experience whose beauty and uniqueness somewhat counterbalance the predominant genre pictures with their adult category.

Hungary's market leader energy drink Hell Energy is expanding to a further two countries. The manufacturer, having booked an increase of 120% in exports over the first half of 2010, is now advancing to Russia and Turkmenistan, extending the number of its export markets to 28. The brand is only five years old, but due to its well-considered export strategy the company already has its own sales and logistics centres in many locations across three continents, including New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Spain, Poland, Romania and Hong Kong. By launching Hell on the Russian and Turkmenistan markets it is expanding in a region where its export activity has already been successful. The energy drink immediately became a market Hell promci Krtn / Hell Energy promotion in Crete leader in Kazakhstan as soon as it was launched in 2010 and in spring this year Afghanistan joined the countries importing Hell. If, during negotiations underway in mid August, the company management finds the appropriate partners for distribution and marketing who it can co-operate with on the new markets, distribution may begin in the two new target countries as early as the beginning of September. At the end of October Pat Metheny without exaggeration one of the worlds greatest guitarists is coming to Budapest and will be performing tracks from his recently released studio album Whats It All About. This is Methenys first recording not to include any of his own compositions, rather acoustic arrangements of popular 60s hits. During his career spanning nearly forty years Metheny has played with such artists as Steve Reich, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Jim Hall, Milton Nascimento and David Bowie. He and his co-composer, Lyle Mays, resemble the renowned Lennon-McCartney and Ellington-Strayhorn partnerships at least according to critics and music fans. He has won 18 Grammy Awards in various ca tegories, of which seven were presented for successive albums of the Pat Metheny Group. The internationally famous jazz guitarist and his formation are giving a concert in the Budapest Congress Center as part of their 00-11 tour. The jazz maestro will be accompanied by Bill Stewart on drums and Larry Grenadier on base guitar.

On 17 and 18 September towers and palaces, mansions and industrial buildings, breweries and caves under cities across Europe are opening their gates calling attention to unique, rare or culturally interesting buildings and locations. During a simulated nuclear catastrophe in the Centre for Nuclear Emergency Response (CERTA) of the National Nuclear Energy Office you can learn what a nuclear institution can do for you when you yourself can no longer do anything. For the first time this year locations in Transylvania are also participating, including the Bocskai House in ClujNapoca, the Transylvanian National Museum in Sfntu Gheorghe and the Teleki Hungarian House in Baia Mare, where through its carved wooden gate you can virtually walk into the life of Count Sndor Teleki, a 19th -century Hungarian army colonel and memoirist whose life was full of adventures.

Yanni, one of the biggest stars at the cutting edge of so-called New Age music who became extremely popular in the 80s, is appearing at Budapests Syma Arena in mid September. During his new tour the Greek-born composer and keyboardist, who lives in America, is performing tracks from his studio album Truth of Touch, which was released in February.

Yannis style of fusing romantic yet dynamic classical and modern music still has a huge following across the world. His albums Dare to Dream (1992) and In My Time (1993) were nominated for Grammy Awards and although Yanni wasnt victorious with either of them he didnt mind the lack of success sales of around 20 million says more than all the golden discs together. Yanni has been playing the piano since the age of six and, discounting an adolescent detour when he dabbled with his band in rock and roll, he has been involved with individualising classical sounds and was performing with a symphonic orchestra already in the late 80s. The concert film Live at the Acropolis was recorded in September 1993 at the 2000-year-old Herodes Atticus Theatre in Athens. The event was broadcast live by Americas PBS channel and was seen by some half a billion viewers across 65 countries. Sales of the concert album reached seven million and a million copies of the video were sold. In 1996 Yanni performed at the Taj Mahal in India and at the Forbidden City in China. For his 2003 Ethnicity album he combined symphonic tones with such instruments as the Australian didgeridoo, the Celtic fiddle, the Armenian duduk and the Indian tabla. Yanni is one of those musicians whose compositions are whistled even by people who claim not to have heard of him. Among his works are the theme tune of the Miami Vice TV series and his compositions have been included in all Olympic Games TV broadcasts since 1988.

The large-scale exhibition at the Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art presents east-central European artworks of 60s and 70s Photorealism and compares them with prominent American and west European paintings. The show selects from hyperrealist and photorealist masterpieces by internationally popular as well as almost forgotten artists assembled from exhibitions held in Vienna and Aachen, and establishes a dialogue between art historically significant Euro-Atlantic works from the 60s to the 80s and east European paintings from the period following the ideological era of Socialist Realism. For a while works created by artists using photographs working in the new style in the late 60s were identified by different labels Superealism, Magic Realism, Radical Realism and Hyperrealism. Then in 1969 New York collector and dealer Louis K. Meisel finally christened the styles of Richard Estes and Chuck Close photorealist. In the exhibition the photorealist illusionists introduce the applauding, smiling everyday of the Cold War and the shortage economy through idyllic genre paintings with jeans, chequered crochet and metallically shining bumpers in the labyrinths of street reflections and wrinkled faces.

It may surprise many that Frances big-framed artist who knows how to get most out of life is deep down a sentimental brute. He has a sensual relationship with nature, mostly with the land, and life itself is his vocation. Grard Depardieus became an actor to give vent to his wild instincts, his hunger for love and the pain he experienced as an unwanted child. Cinema was therapy, helping him avoid juvenile prison. Disorderly behaviour, car theft and shady deals were among the offences committed by Gg, the child from a poor background. The Queens favourite castle is located practically at the edge of one of the worlds busiest airports. Hence at many of the royal familys official and informal events the background music is provided by giant aircraft landing and taking off. Thus several hundred thousand people can peep into the royal apartments every year. But to be fair, if this small disturbing factor is disregarded you encounter a fantastic, authentic medieval fortress castle. The worlds largest still inhabited castle rises at the end of the small towns high street. From Londons Paddington station it only takes half an hour to reach Windsor. Windsor is a great favourite of the Queen and she spends many weekends there. The castle is an imprint of English history: when the country enjoyed peaceful times the castle was continuously extended, renovated and added to, and before wars the walls were fortified. Thus nearly all the monarchs from William the Conqueror to Queen Elisabeth II added something to the building. Many significant events of the Empire took place here the Magna Charta was signed in the castle in 1215 and the Order of the Garter was established here. Glitter evoked from a perspective of 1700 years

Budapest is one of the few European capitals with a Roman heritage and thus amidst the modern bridges, buildings and busy thoroughfares of todays bustling city here and there you can find a large amphitheatre, an aqueduct or a garden of ruins, so much so that even between hypermarkets there are parks dotted with Roman tombstones. Two thousand years ago here stood Aquincum, a Roman settlement and military camp. Thanks to our photo series made with the help of Malvs flight attendants and specialists of the Aquincum Museum, Horizon readers are the first to see the former glitter of the more than 300 gold, silver and bronze pieces of jewellery found locally. Exact copies of these priceless findings decorated Malvs flight attendants one sunny afternoon in August.

In the Roman era the various parts of the Aquincum settlement occupied the territory of todays buda. In the Aquincum Museums garden of ruins you can see part of the civilian town, which was surrounded by a wall, while to the south there are the remains of the military town which, built in a remarkable manner, grew around a fortified legionary camp. The most easily identifiable part of the latter are the remains of the military amphitheatre, which was located to the south of the military town and could hold 13,000 people. Today it lies in the middle of a busy traffic junction. The other noteworthy Roman construction was the Procurators Palace on todays Hajgyr Island, where the Emperor Hadrian, the builder of Britains famous wall, began his career. Although the remains of the palace building cannot be seen today, thanks to the patient work of archaeologists the Aquincum Museum displays its uncovered frescos, mosaic floors, marble and bronze statues among them the emperor with the changeable head along with gold and silver jewellery from different parts of Aquincum. The magnificently built populous, rich sections of the settlement and the residents of the luxurious procuratorial palace even at the edge of the empire enjoyed the splendour represented by Rome. The most striking relics of this magnificence are gold and silver pendants, earrings, rings, hairpins and bracelets decorated with precious stones and genuine pearls, made with a variety of techniques. in Aquincum are displayed in a protected glass cabinet in the hall at the museum housing relics of the procuratorial palace. Among them is a gold necklace made from links shaped like a lyre and wire holding pearls, which researchers believe were fashionable in the third century. The necklace with its translucent blue pearls fixed with wire and its lyre-shaped links lent an elegant appearance to whoever might wear it, ensuring the requisite attention and respect. These days hairpins are out of fashion, but seeing the items made from gold and silver at Aquincum, their popularity could well return. An oval sapphire set in a gold fitting with so-called filigree and engraved technique provides the decoration for a beautiful piece which formerly could have been a fine ornament for the fairly decorative Roman hairstyle. Besides ensuring the hair-do is secure, this third-century treasure also adorned the tresses like an imperishable flower. It is perfectly matched by one of Aquincums most beautiful bracelets, which with alternating gold links and blue glass paste beads stands out from the range of widely used bracelets. Among the pieces of arm decorations the other item of note is a two-part armlet with gold decoration and fastener, made from jet, an originally organic black stone, also known as black amber. The dark jet and the contrasting gold decoration have an especially dramatic effect on the eye even today, not to mention what it must have been like when decorating a graceful arm. Earrings of many kinds were also important jewellery items in Aquincum. One of the museums most beautiful pieces bears witness to rare riches. An oval sapphire set in gold glitters in the middle of an earring with a floral pattern, while around it are arranged curved gold clasps, on which real pearls originally served as petals or leaves. Roman monuments In Budapest

In the territory of todays Budapest it was the Romans who built the first paved roads, streets, stone houses, water conduits, public baths, as well as the first temples, public institutions, theatres, urban markets, fortifications, villas and even pa laces and bridges over the Danube. Budapest was built on this heritage, the remains of which can be seen in the city today. Although only the foundations of most buildings have remained, thanks to reconstruction you can get a good idea of the former glory of Aquincum, where the emperors-tobe Hadrian and Septimus Severus both polished their political careers before they became head of the empire and gods of the Roman state religion. Discovering Budapests Roman heritages requires a little extra effort, but only a little since its easy to fit in the exploration of Roman remains as part of an average Budapest sight-seeing. For those interested in history its a real treat, but for others theres the motivation of discovering interesting, beautiful and often unique sights. A stroll in the military amphitheatre before dinner

The military amphitheatre is located by one of budas busiest traffic junctions, but fortunately via Bokor Street you can quickly reach the small, quiet island of Bcsi Street, where in this part many stylish cafs and restaurants can be found. This is noteworthy since taking in the amphi theatre a comfortable 30-minute stroll is an ideal afternoon activity before dinner. Unfortunately, after dinner theres not much of it to be seen as it is not illuminated. On the other hand, its good that theres no entrance fee, just an iron fence with a gate which you can simply open and then stroll around the arena in every direction without any restrictions. The arena itself is the most significant part of the military amphitheatre and is indeed larger than that of the Coliseum in Rome! It is the biggest relic of Aquincum and was located in the southern part of the military town surrounding the legionary camp. Aquincum Museum
Although the Roman civilian town to the north of the former military encampment is rather far from the main sights of Budapest, it can easily fit into an excursion to the environs of the city. Here you can find the aforementioned Aquincum organ, which is unique in the world. In a special hall you can see original parts of the instrument and its reconstructed version, watch a film and listen to the nearly 2000-year-old recreated organ. The remains of the former Procurators Palace, which stood on todays Hajgyr Island, can also be found in the museum. Mosaic floors, a fountain, wall frescos, the emperors statue, marvellous gold and silver jewellery, bronze and marble statues all bear witness to the former wealth of the palace and widespread luxury of the town. In the garden of ruins besides former dwellings there are the civilian town forum, a courthouse, a Mithras shrine, meat market and public baths, all located near one another. treasure signals to posterity the high level of Roman jewellery making, while its discovery at Aquincum reflects the wealth of the colonial city. Much more could be listed about these special, unique pieces, but there are two local finds which definitely deserve a mention. One is a so-called ring key, consisting of a finger ring with a key fitted to it. In Roman times such characteristic ring keys were presumably used to lock jewellery boxes. The other item, a pendant made from gold and glass, reflects the ideas of the time with its inscription in Greek: Whatever they say, Im not concerned with talk.. Love me, itll do you good. Viewing Aquincums special and exceptionally valuable pieces of jewellery can be recommended to all, not to mention the other rare finds held in the museum, including the Aquincum organ, the emblem of the institute. The organ is the worlds first and only such treasure dating from Roman times. It was reconstructed on the basis of its remaining original parts and can be played. Istvn Deltai, an artiste and performer who has won international competitions, was born into the world of circus. Up to the age of six he lived with his parents, themselves acrobats, in Italy. He has appeared in American and Spanish TV shows attracting many millions of viewers, and currently is the Saturday evening attraction on the stage of an Italian luxury cruiser. Apart from the flights of his profession he is in the air almost every day, since in the past five years he has flown nearly 1500 times visiting 40 countries. Within acrobatics you have specialised in hand balancing. Ive done lots of things. Essentially Im a performing artist rather than a circus acrobat. Currently I appear in a 45-minute, two-person show in large cabarets and theatres. Its perhaps Germany where this artistic form has the largest following the most wellknown venues are the Apollo in Dsseldorf and the Friedrichsbau in Stuttgart.

Mr nem rdekli a cirkusz? Inkbb arrl van sz, hogy a cirkuszmvszet vilgszerte talakulban van. Mert ami eddig volt, az idejt mlta. Kezdetben n is a klasszikus utat jrta be A cirkuszi alapok mellett, mint a kzenlls, a zsonglrkds s az akrobatika, a klasszikus balettl a jazz-balettig, a sznszmestersgtl a pantomimig mindenflt tanultam. Eleinte a porondon ugrabugrltam npzenre, ugrdeszka-mutatvnyokat csinltam. Tizenhat vesen lptem fel elszr a Moulin Rouge-ban s a Maxim varietban. Ugyanakkor mindig is nagyon rdekelt a sznhzi vilg, a balett, a tnc, a jazz balettes vonulata. Hogyan indult a klfldi karrierje? Vletlenl tallkoztam egy holland sznhzi rendezvel, aki szerzdtetett a stuttgarti Friedrichsbau varietba. Ha bekerlsz a krforgsba, egyik meghvs hozza a msikat. Versenyeken indultam, Prizsban fdjat, Wiesbadenben a nmet cirkusziskolk fesztivljn aranyrmet s a nmet kultuszminiszter klndjt nyertem. Egy vig Las Vegasban dolgoztam, bejrtam egsz Amerikt, l televzis show-msorokban szerepeltem. A hagyomnyos mutatvnyok helyett mindig valami jat, valami szokatlant csinltam. Pldul? Szentgyrgyi Rita Are you no longer interested in the circus? Lets say rather that across the world circus art is undergoing a transformation. What weve been used to has become outdated. At the start you also set off on the traditional road. Besides circus basics, such as doing the handstand, juggling and acrobatics, I learnt all sorts including classical and jazz ballet, drama and pantomime. Initially I cavorted around the arena to folk music doing springboard stunts. I first performed at the Moulin Rouge and Maxims when I was 16. At the same time I was always interested in the theatre world and the spectrum of ballet, dance and jazz ballet. How did your international career begin? By chance I met a Dutch stage producer who engaged me for the Stuttgart Friedrichsbau. Once you get into the circuit, one invitation follows the other. I entered for competitions and won the main prize in Paris. I got a gold medal at the German circus schools festival in Wiesbaden, as well as the special prize of Germanys education minister. I worked for a year in Las Vegas and travelled across America, appearing in live TV shows. Apart from traditional stunts, I always did something new, something unusual.

For example? I introduced elements from other artistic genres such as dance, drama and pantomime. In Japan, for example, I paused half way through the show, went to the middle of the stage and said a couple of words in Japanese. For the audience it was something unusual. It added a comic, show-like effect to the performance. Among your international adventures what special situations would you mention? I enjoyed Japan a lot because of the professionalism and fanaticism and I loved Las Vegas since its the home of show business. But for a couple of years now the luxury cruiser has been the tops for me. You have to imagine a four-storey theatre seating two thousand, where the technology is so modern it surpasses the level even of that found in the truly professional Operetta Theatre. What plans are you contemplating? Id like to get involved with young artistes, manage them, help them to succeed in the castings and get contracts. I gave a presentation to the teaching staff of the acrobats school about starting out. In addition, Im teaching pilates and yoga, which provides me with inner spiritual calm. Rita Szentgyrgyi

As a result of Malvs latest development the airlines frequent flyers can book air tickets online for their Bonus Points. The new service saves time and represents an added convenience for approximately a quarter of a million Malv frequent flyers. Members of Duna Club can already book bonus tickets on the airlines website for direct flights operated by Malv. Bonus flights can be redeemed for the whole fa mily or even a group of friends, and there is also the opportunity for members of Duna Club to purchase tickets for someone else in exchange for their bonus points. Malv Cargo moving

Malvs profitable cargo business is moving to Cargo City, the new air freight hub being developed within Budapest Airports large-scale investment project and scheduled for completion by autumn 2012. Under the terms of the finalized contract the Hungarian national airline will rent from the airport 4250 sq.m of warehousing, 583 sq.m of office space, 2300 sq.m of indoor and open-air operational space, and 1058 sq.m of landside area. Transformation and modernisation of Malvs payment card settling system has been completed in line with the final aim of creating outstanding information safety protection with special regard to counteracting the illegal appropriation of data, hackers and data pirates. Meeting the IT security requirements of PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) issued by VISA, EuroCard/Mastercard, American Express, Discover and JCB was set as a basic goal by Malv for the new system and its operational environment when it launched the development. The modernisation lasting one and a half years was conducted under the professional supervision of HOPET IT Ltd. and experts applied the risk management tools of Qualys Inc. during technical tests. Following installation, the system and its environment were certified, indicating that Malv fully corresponded to PCI DSS.

Towards the end of July one of Hungarys most renowned jazz formations, the Elemr Balzs Group, appeared in Madrid following an invitation from the Crculo de Bellas Artes cultural centre to fill an eve ning spot at the Jazz Crculo festival. The group performed tracks from their Early Music album as well arrangements of Hungarian folk music. They are the first and so far only Hungarians to take part in the concert organised on the open terrace of the cultural institutes imposing building. The event attracted more than 200 enthusiasts. Many important, large airports of the world take part. In the questionnaires passengers are asked to rate all services available at the airport, from parking, through security screening to the cleanliness of toilet facilities. Scores over 3.5 awarded on a scale of 1 to 5 are regarded as particularly good. It is therefore a great achievement that Budapest Airport managed to increase its average of 3.63 to 3.97 in the space of a single quarter, surpassing a host of European airports. A total of 52 airports participated in the regional (European) category of the ASQ survey, and in terms of overall satisfaction Budapest Airport outperformed a number of competitors. It is an

important fact that both tourists and business travellers awarded high scores to the services provided by Budapest Airport. The courtesy of airport security staff, short waiting times at the otherwise thorough passenger security screening, the choice of airport restaurants and their excellent value for money, and the prices in airport shops were amongst the categories receiving the highest marks. In terms of general ambience of the airport and ease of wayfinding, SkyCourt ranked amongst the best in Europe, with Budapest Airport voted into the best 10 airports on the continent. It is especially noteworthy that whilst transferring was often challenging during the construction works, now, after the handover of SkyCourt, transfer passengers consider Budapest Airport to be an excellent location for changing flights, with easy wayfinding. It is Budapest Airports strategic objective to become the best airport in east-central Europe in terms of service quality and dynamic growth. Airports and the services of airlines are well known to all, yet in the course of travel no one meets air traffic controllers. Their job is invisible for passengers, yet they ensure that all flights reach their destinations safely. National air navigation services navigate aircraft as the land pilots of pilots in every European country. Over Hungary HungaroControl makes sure that aircraft and their passengers can proceed safely. In the control centre Hungarian air controllers scan the airspace with the help of state-of-the-art technology, radar and software, and scrutinize the runway from the airport's control tower in order to navigate pilots successfully. The staff of the company employing nearly 700 people navigate more than 600,000 flights annually. Continuously increasing traffic presents a great challenge for navigation services monitoring air transport to avoid traffic jams. The European Union has launched an initiative whereby national air control services closely co-operate so they can smoothly handle traffic which is expected to double in the next two decades. The Hungarian air navigation service is an initiating and active member of the Single European Sky project. HungaroControl is preparing for the future with significant investments in order to have sufficient navigation capacity and provide high standard services however large the traffic may be. Thus, by the end of 2012 it will have built a new, hightech control centre covering nearly 10,000 square metres. HungaroControl is financing it with nearly 11.4 billion forints of its own resources, while a further 1.6 billion forints are being provided by the European Union as part of its TEN-T project. The service also places great emphasis on training air traffic controllers. Together with one of Europes most prominent Scandinavian training institutions, HungaroControl has established a top international academy in Budapest where, from September this year, the future generations of Hungarian air traffic controllers will be trained. Az amerikai htkznapokban jtszd trtnet idegen volt a magyar nzk szmra, nem tudtak azonosulni a kalandos esemnyek szereplivel. Turn on the sound

The first Hungarian talking movie, A Blue Idol, was screened in Budapests Royal Cinema 80 years ago, on 25 September 1931. The age of sound films began in 1927 with Warner Brothers The Jazz Singer, in which the leading role was played by Al Jolson who was blacked up since at the time a black actor could not have a title role. The romantic film, which was partly so successful due to the song Sonny Boy, was very popular in Budapest, too, being shown 291 times in the Forum Cinema and screened in the Capitol on 123 occasions to full houses. As a newspaper of the time reported: The Hungarian audience has surrendered to talkies. Cinemas devoted to showing premieres changed over to screening sound films in quick succession and by the end of the season the number of Hungarian talking picture cinemas equipped with various devices had already exceeded fifty. A total of 91 sound films were on during the 192930 season. Talking movies caused a lot of problems for film-makers across the world. Producers tore their hair out over completed or half-ready silent films, since they could find no outlet for them anywhere. Despite the budding success, the film indust ry was reluctant to change over to talking movies as the conversion involved significant costs. Studios had to purchase sound film recorders at a price ranging from 250,000 to half a million dollars. Those unable to change dropped out and the era of silent films ended. So in late September 1931 A Blue Idol was shown in Budapests Royal Apollo. However, the film starring Pl Jvor and Gyula Gzon did not live up to expectations. The story, set in America and reflecting ordinary life, was alien to Hungarian cinema-goers who couldnt identify with the characters in the plot. In contrast, the next talkie, Hippolyt, the Butler, was very popular and the success continued with such films as Dream Car, Half Rate Honeymoon and Wisteria. G. SZ.
