Technical Advisory Bulletin

TAB#: Revision: Page: Subject: 96 0 1 of 2 Main Processor Re-education Due to a COMM module in Chassis #2, Slot #1 Release Date: Part No.: January 27, 1999 9791006-096

Affected Products: Model #3006/3007 Main Processor Module, Version 9.4 and earlier V9.x Problem Description: A problem has been discovered in the communication (COM) firmware of the TRICON systems Main Processor module (MP). Installing and configuring any communication module in Slot #1 of a Version 9 High Density Expansion Chassis #2 causes all three Main Processor modules to fail and begin the re-education process. Background: The TRICON system is designed to allow the use of communication modules in Expansion Chassis #2 if the Main Chassis I/O slots are fully populated. This type of configuration provides flexibility when interfacing with multiple external hosts. During TRICON System Test at the Triconex factory, it was found that by configuring and installing any communication module (model #4119/4119A EICM, #4329 NCM, #4509 HIM, #4409 SMM or #4609 ACM) in either the left or right position of Slot #1 in a High Density Expansion Chassis #2 causes all three Main Processor modules to fail and start a re-education. The discovered problem revealed that the communication (COM) firmware does not handle the addressing of a communication module properly in Slot #1 of a High Density Expansion Chassis #2. This addressing problem causes the TSX diagnostics to fail the Main Processor modules.

Operational Restrictions / Recommended Actions: You must not install and configure any communication module in Slot #1 of Expansion Chassis #2 until the next maintenance release for Version 9 TRICON systems. Use any other available, empty slot in the Main Chassis. If the Main Chassis does not have any available slots, then remove its Input/Output modules and reconfigure them in an Expansion Chassis. If Expansion Chassis #2 must be used, observe the following rules: Connect Model #9001 I/O COMM cables directly to the Main Chassis If Model #4509 HIM modules are used, install them in the Main Chassis only If Model #4409 SMM modules are used, install them only in Slots #2, #3, #4 and #5 of Expansion Chassis #2 Install all other communication modules in any other slot except Slot #1 of Expansion Chassis #2
