The Medieval Christmas Market at the Chocolate Museum may disappoint in terms of the selection of stalls (unless youre interested in seeing a blacksmith at work or want to know what happens to wool fresh off a sheeps back), but what it lacks in holiday trinkets it more than makes up for with the delicious hot chocolate and Lindt goodies! Head also for Heumarkt, where the ice skating rink is at, just a stones throw from the Altstadt Market. You should be aware that the markets get very busy at weekends (to the point of having to squeeze your way to the front of a stall to take a look at whats on offer), so if youre planning on visiting with young children, try to make it on a week night to avoid unnecessary stress! Also, most markets are more or less identical in their offerings, so it really doesnt matter where you start as all the markets are within walking distance of each other. Remember also that Colognes Christmas Markets, whilst undeniably a wonderful holiday experience that youll remember for a long time, tend to cater very heavily to tourists and busloads of Brits and Italians coming in on package tours carrying plenty of Euro, so you may find things a little pricey and the atmosphere rather more commercialized in comparison to some of the smaller, more intimate markets in other parts of Germany. Also, you may find the wander from market to market a little cumbersome if youre pushing a stroller. Aside from the markets, the citys holiday calendar is jam-packed with events such as variety performances, Christmas concerts, nativity displays and of course the large (temporary) ice rink on Heumarkt. Dates: 25 November - 23 December Times: 11am-9pm (Sun-Wed), 11am-10pm (Thu-Fri), 10am-10pm (Sat) Where: Alter Markt, Cologne, 50667 More Info: www.koelnerweihnachtsmarkt.com
