Icom Demos 6.25kHz Radios at Enterprise Wireless

Icom executives used the opportunity of this years Enterprise Wireless Expo to exhibit its 6.25kHz migration solutions. Icom and Kenwood, who together have developed the digital technology, demonstrated the 6.25kHz radios and other equipment by communicating between the two company booths on the trade show exhibitor floor. The demonstration samples that Icom displayed are the first steps to present a migration solution to digital technology for the Business and Industrial two-way radio user. Consumers have come to expect robust voice-and-data capabilities in their wireless communications devices. Digital radios will offer similar capabilities, enabling Icom dealers the possibility to provide radio communications solutions never before imagined. These radios can be operated on both 12.5kHz and 6.25kHz channels. This allows the customer to replace equipment slowly over time, rather than having to purchase an entire system that meets the new 6.25kHz requirement. With this technology, Icom digital radios could effectively double or even quadruple spectrum licensing and the rate of migration in the future. A huge impediment to radio solutions growth in the past has been the lack of available spectrum. One of the solutions to this problem could be solved with 6.25kHz capable Icom digital radios. Icom takes an industry leadership role with digital radios that meet the 6.25kHz equivalent efficiency standard set by the FCC (which was the original intention in the re-farming Docket). Our dealers and their customers will benefit from this Icom leadership and they can take comfort in the fact that Icom can provide them with exciting products for years to come. In reality, the old way of using frequencies is finished. Its up to us as communication companies to embrace the innovative solutions that move us and our customers forward, Chris Lougee, Vice-President of Icom Americas Land Mobile Division, said.

Rugged Features of the F50/F60 Series Earns Record Sale for Dealers in LA /TX Region
A dealer from the Southeast Texas and Louisiana area earned the regions largest sale of Icom products in 5 years, reports Joe Conely, an area manager for Walker Associates, an Icom manufacturing representative. At minimum, hundreds, and possibly thousands of F50/F60 radios will be provided to this one customer over a multi-year contract, negotiated by one of the many dealers Conely oversees. The radios will be used for a variety of public safety, commercial and industrial usage by hundreds of employees, Conely said. The deal, which was finalized during the summer, was a huge breakthrough for Icom America. The customer actually switched brands to start using Icom America products, Conely said. Besides the ruggedness, performance, ease of programming and technical service, the waterproof features are what made this product particularly attractive to the customer, he said. Note: This sale was made prior to hurricane Katrina and is not disasterrelated.

Meet Your Icom Team

Scott Bigger
Land Mobile Systems Specialist Scott, 38, who came to Icom America from Day Wireless out of Spokane two months ago, is a systems specialist who will be working with both Icoms new 100-watt repeater series and developing new systems projects. He specializes in building and integrating 911 systems.

To create a radio frequency that can squeeze transmissions through a 6.25kHz bandwidth, Icom used a 4Level FSK for modulation. Though other technologies are available, they require a linear power amplifier in PA, which will not be compatible with existing FM radio. The proposed 4Level FSK, though, can use existing PA circuitry in current FM radio. Data Baud rate runs at 4,800 bps; has a combined voice and slow speed data transmit; GPS location with voice; and requires no data modems.

Icom has tried in as many ways as possible to gear this equipment towards the end user. The FDMA approach was selected over TDMA because the FDMA approach is simpler for after-service maintenance, as well as serving as a better method for a large consumer market. The new technology has approximately the same receiver sensitivity as the existing FM radio. As well, Icoms P25 radios can be updated to work in 6.25kHz mode.

Programming Public Address /External RX Speaker Functions
The 521 and 621 series Icom mobiles allow the dealer to connect an external amplified speaker (dealer sourced) using either the Public Address or External RX Speaker functions.
The 521 and 621 mobile radio series can connect to an external amplified speaker using two functions: Public Address and External RX Speaker.

NEW A & W Water Repellant

Cases

These new cases are waterrepellant and attach with a unique clip that allows the user to insert the case in any direction, locking it into place. It is made out of a hard, leather-like material that is lightweight and has the same abrasion resistance of nylon.

The Public Address function allows the user to speak into his or her microphone and broadcast voice through the dealer-supplied amplified speaker. The audio signal (low level) is accessed by connecting speaker input to pin 5 of the J 6 Jack on the main board using an OPC 617 accessory cable. A button is programmed in as Public Address and when the PA is required, the user presses that button (the display will read PA On), keys up the microphone and speaks. Their amplified voice will be projected through the amplified speaker. The RX speaker function allows you leave your vehicle and still hear the receive signal of the radio. The connection is identical to the PA function. Just hook it up to pin 5 of the J6 Jack and utilize an external amplified jack (dealer supplied). A RX Speaker button is programmed in, and when the customer needs external audio, they would push the button to enable the feature. Volume is controlled by the amplified speaker or, to a lesser extent, by the volume knob of the radio.
