CHAPTERS 4 TO 6 WHILE READING
1 Spiros friend Adoni said he would marry Miranda,
even though there wouldnt be a dowry (unless her
godfather Sir Julian gave her one).
2 It was not the body of Spiro, as Lucy expected, but
the body of the Greek man she had seen the night
before.
3 The fact that he had seen Yanni Zoulas the previous
night, when Yanni had come up to the Castello.
4 They said he had had some kind of accident and
was dead when he went into the water.
5 She found her sisters ring and the dolphin.
6 Because she couldnt get the dolphin back into the
water on her own, and if the dolphins skin became
too dry it would die.

Encourage students to speculate and to make
guesses, but do not tell them if their guesses are
right. They will find out as they read that the
answer to all three questions is Max Gale.
CHAPTERS 7 TO 9 WHILE READING

8 T
9 F Max was keeping Spiro in his cellar in secret.
CHAPTERS 10 TO 12 WHILE READING
1 Spiro thought that Godfrey was angry with him
because he had gone into the boat-house without
asking Godfrey first.
2 Godfrey had gone out in the boat that night in order
to take photographs.
3 When the wave carried Spiro away from the boat,
Spiro kept quiet so that Godfrey wouldnt be able to
find him and kill him.
4 Max wanted Lucy to keep Godfrey away from Corfu
harbour so that Godfrey wouldnt see Spiro when
Max brought him back from Athens.
5 Godfrey had encouraged Sir Julian to get drunk in
order to find out what he knew about Spiro.
6 Miranda was excited by what Adoni showed her
because she thought it was proof that the stories
about Saint Spiridion and his magic books were
true.
7 Lucy realized that Adoni must have found something
which connected Godfrey with the murders.
8 Lucy felt she had to go to the cave in case Godfrey
removed the proof before Max and Adoni came
back with the police.
CHAPTERS 13 TO 15 WHILE READING
1 Godfrey removed the box from the pool in the cave,
and Lucy and Miranda followed him to see where he
took it.
2 Lucy found the packets on a shelf under the
floorboards in the boat.
3 When Lucy saw Godfrey coming, she put the packet
in the water by the side of the boat and hid under
the blankets on the bed in the cabin.
4 If the Albanians caught Godfrey with the forged
money, they would shoot him.
5 When Godfreys bullet missed Lucy, she jumped into
the sea.
6 Lucy was pushed out of the sea by the dolphin.
7 When Lucy arrived at the Villa Rotha, she stood
outside the french windows to listen to what people
were saying in the room.
8 Godfrey said he had been smuggling, but the truth
was he had been taking forged money to Albania.

9 When Adoni saw Lucy outside the room, he left the
room quietly and came outside to find her.
10 Lucy told Adoni about the packet of money, and
then Adoni went to fetch it while Lucy went into the
room.

Acceptable answers to this cloze passage are any
words that have an appropriate meaning and fit
the grammar of the sentence. Students might like
to check each others work and discuss alternative
answers. Some alternatives are given below.
You know, Phyll, I really enjoyed opening the window
and going into the room when Godfrey said he had no
idea where I was. You should have seen his face! And
then suddenly bullets were (started) flying across the
room, and Godfrey was holding my arm and pulling
me to (towards / through) the door. I was terrified,
of course. Then Sir Julian arrived, acting completely
drunk, but he really was acting. After he threw his
whisky bottle at the light, the next thing I knew was
that Sir Julian was holding me, and Max and Godfrey
were fighting like wild animals (cats / things). Spiro
tried to shoot Godfrey, but missed, and Godfrey
escaped, ran down to the boat, and started the engine.
But as (when) the boat headed out towards the open
sea, suddenly there was this huge explosion (bang /
noise) like a rocket going off. You must have seen that,
Phyll and heard it! I think Adoni knew that Godfrey
might (would) try to escape, so when he was down in
the boat-house, getting the packet of forged money, he
must have turned on a gas tap on the boat. But dont
tell anyone that, Phyll, because (as) the police believe it
was an accident.
And Ive got another piece of news as well. Its been
quite an exciting (amazing / extraordinary) night!
This might be a bit surprising (unexpected) though
Sir Julian says that he saw it coming from the start!
Anyway, the (my) news is that Max has asked me to
marry him, and Ive said yes!
ACTIVITY 3 AFTER READING
Any appropriate answers are acceptable. Suggested
answers:
MAX: Adoni, Im afraid Ive got some bad news.
ADONI: What is it? Whats happened?
MAX: A bodys been found on the beach. Its Yanni.
ADONI: Yanni? But thats terrible. Are they sure its him?
MAX: Yes, quite sure. I saw the body myself. And I
think he was murdered, Adoni.
ADONI: Murdered! But who would want to murder
Yanni, Max?
MAX: Well, do you remember how Yanni warned us
last night not to tell Godfrey Manning about Spiro?
ADONI: So you think Mr Manning attacked Yanni as
well as Spiro? What are you going to do?
MAX: Im going to try and find out why. Spiro must
have found out what was going on, which is why
Manning tried to kill him.
ADONI: Yes, Spiro almost certainly knows something.
You and Yanni were going across tonight to get
him, werent you?
MAX: Yes, we were. And I cant do it alone, so I need
your help, Adoni. Will you come with me?
ADONI: Of course I will.
MAX: But dont say anything to Miranda or her
mother, will you?
ADONI: No, I wont say a word to either of them.
ACTIVITY 4 AFTER READING
1 Yanni, as he made his way up to the Castello with
news of Spiro on the night that Lucy saw him.
2 Godfrey, when he realized that Lucy was hiding in
the cabin of his boat.
3 Spiro, after he had been pushed into the water off
Godfreys boat, and as he realized that Godfrey was
trying to kill him.
4 Adoni, when he caught sight of Lucy looking in the
window of the Villa Rotha while the police were
questioning Godfrey.
5 Phyllida, when she realized that she had probably
left her diamond ring on the beach.
6 Sir Julian, when he saw Lucy in his rose garden and
realized that she was the same girl that Max had
told him about.
The order in the story is: 3, 6, 1, 5, 2, 4

An English visitor, Mr Godfrey Manning, was killed
last night when his boat exploded in the bay. Just
before the accident, Mr Manning had been at the Villa
Rotha where Inspector Papadopoulos interviewed him.
Mr Manning told police that he had been smuggling
but said he knew nothing about the death of Yanni
Zoulas whose body was found on the beach a few days
ago. The Inspector also questioned Mr Manning about
the disappearance of Miss Lucy Waring, who had been
out with Mr Manning in the afternoon. However,
Miss Waring returned to the Villa Rotha during the
interview, and Mr Manning left soon afterwards and
set off in his boat. Police believe that gas from the
boats kitchen caused the explosion because Miss
Waring said that she had noticed a strong smell of gas
on board the boat. The police now have information
that Mr Manning was responsible for killing Mr
Zoulas so their investigation into his death has been
closed.
Students may add as many details as they like to
give their own version of events.
A possible answer might be:
An English visitor, Mr Godfrey Manning, was killed
last night when his boat exploded in the bay. Just
before the accident, Mr Manning had been at the Villa
Rotha where Inspector Papadopoulos interviewed him.
Mr Manning told police that he had been smuggling,
but in fact he had been taking forged money to
Albania. Although he said he knew nothing about the
death of Yanni Zoulas, whose body was found on the
beach a few days ago, he had in fact killed Yanni and
then tried to make his death look like an accident.
The Inspector also questioned Mr Manning about the
disappearance of Miss Lucy Waring, who had been
out with Mr Manning in the afternoon. Mr Manning
said he had not seen her since 7 oclock, but Miss
Waring suddenly appeared at the Villa Rotha and told
the police that Mr Manning had tried to kill her on
his boat. During the fight that followed, Mr Manning
escaped and tried to leave in his boat, which exploded
soon afterwards. Although Miss Waring told the
police that she had noticed a strong smell of gas on
board the boat, she suspected that Adoni had turned
a gas tap on when he went to collect the proof she
had hidden in the boat-house. The police now have
information that Mr Manning was responsible for one
murder and two attempted murders, but with his death
their investigations are now closed.
