Junior Preparatory Newsletter 2:1

Dear Families, A big welcome back to all the children and families! I trust that you all had a good break. It seems hard to believe that we are now into the second term of 2013. We have had a busy start to the term with reports going out and Parent Interviews. Thank you to all the parents that took the time to meet with the teachers to discuss their childrens progress. Extra Mural, Sports & Cultural Programme: Our Extra Mural, Sports & Cultural Programme for term 2 will commence on Monday 15 th April. Please note that the teachers name stipulated in the timetable is the co-ordinator for the activity and all enquiries must be directed to the mentioned teacher. Morning Routine: All children need to put their bags in their lockers and move down to the field where a teacher will be on duty to supervise the children before school starts. Children are not allowed to stay in the corridors before school starts. Teachers will line the children up at 7h45am and classes will commence at 8h00am. Please ensure that your child is at school on time. We are very pleased to be able to send our two co-ordinators Mrs Gerazounis and Nicola Crooks to Italy. They will be leaving this evening to attend a weeks conference in the town of Reggio Emilia. We wish them well on their travels. Lastly, a big welcome to all our new little children and their families that have joined Reddam Waterfall this term. Wishing you a very good weekend, Regards
Amy Goodlace

Sports And Cultural Program

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE ONLY ALLOW CHILDREN THAT HAVE ENROLLED IN AN ACTIVITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CHOSEN ACTIVITY. The reason for this is that we need to supply materials and staff to facilitate the activity and it can only be well organized if we are well prepared. Should you wish to change your option or add your childs name to an activity please email Natalie Cargin at natalie.cargin@reddamwaterfall.co.za so that we can make the necessary arrangements and inform the relevant teacher. Please take note of the following procedures and view the timetables at the end of the newsletter: The teacher will collect your child from class and escort them to the Extra Curricular activity. All children will be brought to the Reception area (Prep school) after their activities if they are not collected from the specified venue following which they will be taken to Adventure Zone and parents will be billed accordingly. Please not that if you have chosen netball for your child it will now be on the school field and finishes at 2:30 NOT 2:45 as per the previous timetable. If you have not collected your child within 15 minutes after the activity before taking children to adventure zone .

The Hundred Languages of Children

The child is made of one hundred. The child has a hundred languages a hundred hands a hundred thoughts a hundred ways of thinking of playing, of speaking. A hundred. Always a hundred ways of listening of marveling, of loving a hundred joys for singing and understanding a hundred worlds to discover a hundred worlds to invent a hundred worlds to dream. The child has a hundred languages (and a hundred hundred hundred more) but they steal ninety-nine. The school and the culture separate the head from the body. They tell the child: to think without hands to do without head to listen and not to speak to understand without joy to love and to marvel only at Easter and at Christmas. They tell the child: to discover the world already there and of the hundred they steal ninety-nine. They tell the child: that work and play reality and fantasy science and imagination sky and earth reason and dream are things that do not belong together. And thus they tell the child that the hundred is not there. The child says: No way. The hundred is there.

The Art of mime

Looking at Loris Malaguzzi poem The Hundred Languages of Children, I was struck by the many ways in which children and people interconnect. I really agree that there are many ways of exploring communication. a hundred thoughts a hundred ways of thinking, of playing, of speaking. somewhere in between those amazing activities is The Art of Mime. A simple gesture spoken through the body can say one hundred words. Mime artists speak to all of us by using their bodies. A simple thought processed in the mind expressed through the body is a beautiful sight to behold. A painted face in costume, a mirror reflection and an aim to touch the hearts of many is what we are trying to achieve in Mix-aMime club. When I decided to be a stationary mime in our school Piazza, little did I know the impact it would make on the children of our school and their parents. There were many different reactions from the children like apprehension and excitement. These reactionary emotions raised some important questions in my mind, and from these many questions my answer was always that, the busking artist will be there for society. Be it in a mall, a flea market or at a traffic light, you will always have a fleeting moment in time with the friendly person behind the painted face. Ms A (Drama teacher)
