It is typical Tchaikovsky music - sometimes almost overly dramatic, sometimes ridiculously bea utiful, and always interesting in rhythm and harmony. This is the complete ballet, not the collection of extracts from the ballet know n as 'The Nutcracker Suite'. The recording was released in 1995, but is digitally remastered, and was originally made in 1974. IMO it is still one of th e best recordings of the complete ballet, very much so because the music is not rushed (which is otherwise all too common, perhaps in order to fit the wh ole ballet into one CD). If you want to hear the music the way it might be danced, this is for you. The latter half of CD 2 contains Offenbach's Le Papillon, his only full length b allet.
