Los Angeles 90017 September 17, 2010 Dear Parent: The Arts Education Branch of the Los Angeles Unified School District is sponsoring a Districtwide Elementary Music Festival on Sunday, April 10, 2011 at the Luckman Performing Arts Center at California State University-L.A. Music students from throughout the city will audition to be part of the select group of 120 players in the Elementary Orchestra and 200 singers in the Elementary Chorus. Congratulations, your child has been recommended to audition for the orchestra! This Districtwide Music Festival will be a very special event and an outstanding opportunity for the selected young musicians to rehearse and perform with other fine players from schools throughout our city. The experience will provide educational and social enrichment. Auditions for the orchestra will take place at the students school in January and February and they will be notified regarding acceptance at the end of February. Not every student who auditions will be selected. Selection of students for the orchestra will be based upon musical accomplishment and will also require approval of the classroom teacher. Students selected for the Festival Orchestra will rehearse at the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood on Wednesday, March 9, and Thursday, April 7, 2011 and at 11:30 a.m. at the Luckman Auditorium on the performance day. Rehearsals on 3/9 and 4/7 will take place during school time and bus transportation from central locations to the rehearsals will be provided by the District. There will also be a third rehearsal on Saturday, April 2, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Hollywood Presbyterian Church. This rehearsal is highly recommended but not required. For the rehearsal, students will need to bring a sack lunch and parents will need to arrange transportation. Bus transportation will not be provided for this rehearsal only. The festival committee will provide snacks and drinks. Please indicate your permission for your child to audition for the Festival Orchestra by completing the attached page and having your child return it to her/his music teacher promptly. Please do not give permission for your child to audition unless s/he would be able to attend the rehearsals on March 9 and April 7, as well as the 11:30 dress rehearsal on the performance day. You will receive more detailed information regarding this event if your child is selected for the orchestra.
