Another Hemingway returns for Key West Film Festival

BY SHIRREL RHOADES

ariel Hemingway says the first time she realized her grandfather was someone special, more than just a writer whose picture hung in her familys hallway, was when she went to school Ernest Hemingway Elementary School in Ketchum, Idaho. He must have been somebody important to have a school named after him, she thought to herself. Growing up in Idaho, she hiked, rode, climbed a real tomboy. I think my father wanted a boy, she laughed as she reminisced about her childhood. Her dad was Jack Hemingway, eldest son of the great writer. Jack was known for his love of the outdoors, a devout fly fisherman. A love of nature, Mariel said. I think I got that from him. She sees nature as a way to stay at peace, a way of find your balance in life. She recently wrote a book about it with her partner Bobby Williams, titled Running With Nature. She and the noted stuntman met on a hike. Starting off her acting career by co-starring in Lipstick with her late sister Margaux, she went on to receive an Oscar nomination for

Ernest Hemingway shot himself a few months before Mariel was born. Her sister Margaux overdosed on phenobarbital. Great Uncle Leicester committed suicide with a gunshot to the head. These are taboo subjects, Mariel maintains. But the film gives people permission to talk about these things. Why make such a revealing film? I did it because I was very curious myself, she says. And I wanted my children to know about these family secrets. But she also saw it as a way to help other people come to terms with mental issues. A friend of hers at the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) suggested this documentary about her family. Are you out of your mind? Mariel Mariel Hemingway responded. Theyre all crazy. But thats the point, her friend Woody Allens Manhattan. Among replied. her many other films were Personal When director Barbara Kopple (a Best, Mean Season, Star 80, and Creator (Peter OToole was crazy as two-time Oscar-winner for Harlan County USA and American Dream) a loon, she says fondly). that my sister did was a surprise for me. Listening to her talk about her pain gave me a new appreciation for what she was going through. In the documentary Mariel recalls her dysfunctional parents, the drinking, the fights, her father taking refuge in their basement while young Mariel dutifully cleaned up the broken glass and blood as if it were a normal nightly ritual. The actress and activist will be in Key West to present Running From Crazy at the upcoming Key West Film Festival, Nov. 13 through 17. Her actress daughter Dree Hemingway was a guest at last years Key West film Festival, appearing in her debut film Starlet. Looking back Mariel Hemingway finds it hard to believe shes only visited Key West twice before. My first trip was 20 years ago, briefly. I came back a couple of years ago. It was good fun. Now she returns to the island where her famous grandfather remains a legend, his image plastered on saloons, T-shirts, and his one-time home. She brings her familys untold story. Its a dark history of the family, she says. But its also an uplifting film.

Cooke Communication Film Review

AT THE MOVIES
SHIRREL RHOADES

Enders Game bugs some moviegoers

and has nothing to do with political issues that did not exist when the book was written in 1984, he says. With the recent Supreme Court ruling, the gay marriage issue becomes moot. The Full Faith and Credit clause of the Constitution will, sooner or later, give legal force in every state to any marriage contract recognized by any other state. Now it will be interesting to see whether the victorious proponents of gay marriage will show tolerance toward those who disagreed with them when the issue was still in dispute. Star Harrison Ford sums it up: I am aware of his statements admitting that the question of gay marriage is a battle that he lost and he admits that he lost it. I think we all know that weve all won. That humanity has won. And I think thats the end of the story. Well, that story, at least. srhoades@aol.com

ack in 1977 I picked up the August issue of Analog Science Fiction and Fact and read a terrific short story called Enders Game. About 10 years later it was expanded into a novel that won both Nebula and Hugo Awards. Now it has finally become a movie starring Harrison Ford (of Star Wars fame) and Asa Butterfield (from the title role in Hugo). The plot is perfect for todays CGI-dominated space operas: Earth is under siege by an alien force known as Buggers (think: bug-eyed monsters), so our military trains children to lead Earths International Fleet. One kid named Ender Wiggins proves himself unusually adept at strategy as he goes through training at the orbiting Battle School. Therefore hes picked by Colonel Graff (Ford) to

lead the fight against the Buggers. Its one of those Earth depends on you missions. Toss in Ben Kingsley (Gandhi), Viola Davis (The Help) and Hailee Steinfeld (Romeo and Juliet) as supporting cast uh, I mean, as intergalactic warriors and you have a winner. Almost. Directed by Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Enders Game is currently playing at the Regal Cinema 6. The real battle, however, is going on off-screen. Not intergalactic warriors versus bugs, but the author of Enders Game versus the LGBT community thats bugged by his personal views. Not realizing that hed one day have to sell a movie to audiences, sci-fi writer Orson Scott Card built a name for

himself away from the printed page as an outspoken critic of gay marriages. As a Mormon, he opposes samesex marriage. He is a greatgreat-grandson of Brigham Young. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) issued a statement suggesting its members should not support Cards creative endeavors. The films producers are hastily distancing themselves from Card. Roberto Orci says,

The movie should be judged on its message, not the personal beliefs of the original author. He insists that Card had minimal involvement in making the film. Even The Hollywood Reporter noted that The new scrutiny of Cards views could be a problem for the $110 million Enders Game movie. Card meanwhile is doing damage control. The Fifth Estate is a real-life thriller about WikiLeaks

he so-called three estates are the clergy, the nobility, and commoners. Later, Edmund Burke added the term fourth estate to refer to the press. A group operating outside of societys normal groupings is considered a fifth estate. For that reason, WikiLeaks has been described as a fifth estate. The new film titled The Fifth Estate, now playing at the Tropic Cinema, is in fact a thriller based on the real-life turmoil surrounding Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks. Directed by Bill Condon (Dreamgirls, Kinsey), the film tells the story of how activist Assange (played by Benedict Cumberbatch of Star Trek Into Darkness) and journalist Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Daniel Brhl of Rush)

came together to found a tell-all website called WikiLeaks. Starting off, WikiLeaks exposed offshore crime in the Cayman Islands, secrets of Scientology, and Sarah Palins email. However, the situation gets dangerous when WikiLeaks starts releasing classified documents provided by U.S. Army intelligence analyst Bradley Manning. Assange and Berg have a falling out over protecting sources. That leads to a coup, with Berg and his team blocking Assanges access to the WikiLeaks server. And, as we know from newspaper headlines, the real-life Assange is currently holed up in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, evading charges of sexual assault that he calls a ruse to turn him

over to the Americans. After all, the U.S. government has reason to exterminate him. Assange denounces this film, because its partially based on a book by his nemesis Daniel Berg. He calls it a serious propaganda attack on WikiLeaks and the integrity of its staff. Benedict Cumberbatch actually met with Assange while researching his part in the film. The actor appears to be somewhat sympathetic. No matter how you cut it, says Cumberbatch, hes done us a massive service, to wake us up to the zombielike way we absorb our news. Maybe, maybe not. The films working title was The Man Who Sold the World. srhoades@aol.com

Top 10 Favorite Space Movies

BY SHIRREL RHOADES With Enders Game opening at movie houses this week, my friends and I started thinking about our favorite space movies. So here are our picks for the Top 10: 10. Le Voyage Dans La Lune (1902) A Trip to the Moon was an early masterpiece by George Melies, the subject character in Hugo. A touch cheesy by todays standards, but groundbreaking for its time, proving that movies were indeed magic. 9. WALL-E (2008) Yes, its an animated film, and, yes, it stars a robot. But this film gives us a charming view of space from a robotic point of view. Thank you, Pixar. 8. Solaris (2002) Stephen Soderbergh has created a psychological love story set in outer space. George Clooney gets his astronaut training with this film. 7. The Right Stuff (1983) Based on the book by Tom Wolfe, we get the story of the Mercury 7 astronauts; brave men who had the right stuff. 6. Alien (1979) Ridley Scott delivers a horror film set in outer space, with Ripley (underwear-clad Sigourney Weaver) facing off against a space monster. 5. Silent Running (1972) Bruce Dern and his droids share their lonely existence as hydroponic farmers on a space station. 4. Apollo 13 (1995) Ron Howards tale about three men trapped in space who have no idea if theyll ever make it back to Earth. 3. Gravity (2013) Best seen in 3D, this survival film starring Sandra Bullock proves you dont need many characters to make a good movie. 2. Star Wars (All of them) George Lucas and his ILM wizards deliver the greatest space saga of all time, with Han Solo, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker. 1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) Stanley Kubrick shared the awe of outer space in this landmark film about Dave, HAL the computer, and apes tossing bones in the air. Based on the Arthur C. Clarke novella. Thats the collective list from my gang of space cowboys. Theres a reason we ignored movies like Prometheus, Moon, and Outland because they took place on planets and moons, not outer space. Grab your space helmet, rocket pack and blaster pistol then tell us which movies youd add to this list. srhoades@aol.com

Morgan Freeman in Last Vegas

FRONT ROW
Cooke Communication Film Review

AT THE MOVIES
SHIRREL RHOADES

ouve probably seen all three Hangover movies, that boys-will-beboys comedy series with an ensemble cast. In the first outing, they got themselves in trouble in Las Vegas. Now we have Last Vegas, a new comedy at Tropic Cinema, that features four older boys getting in trouble. Here we have four best friends in their late 60s who go to Vegas to celebrate the last among them to get married. These fun-loving old-timers include Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline. As directed by Jon Turteltaub (While You Were Sleeping, The Sorcerers Apprentice), the film gives four screen legends of a certain age the opportunity to chase skirts and punch out

guys a third of their age. Guys in their late 60s? Hmm, somebodys lying about his age. Morgan Freeman is actually 76. How does he stay so young at heart? Hang with young women, he laughs. Im telling you, it works. But its also about keeping yourself fit keep moving, keep exercising. And also, youve got to have reasons to get up. If you have work that you like doing, and those of us in acting have work we like doing, you can go on for a long time. While filming Last Vegas, the foursome spent two days judging a bikini contest. There was a lot of eye candy there, says Freeman. And we were all experiencing it big-time. Trust me. Its not bad duty. The other three range in age from 70 down to 66. They are described as living legends. Michael Douglas describes his character as a sleazeball

lawyer. Kevin Kline plays a guy kinda at loose ends. De Niro calls himself the protector of the group. Morgan Freeman says hes the calming force. So how do they get in so much trouble, these protectors and calming forces? Because Billy (Douglas) is finally getting married, having popped the question to a girlfriend one-third his age. So his friends the Flatbush Flour, friends of 57 years decide to give him a send-off. As Kline describes it, hilarity ensues. Could this story really have happened to them? Morgan Freeman says no speaking for himself. Im not the Vegas type, really. Im not a gambler, not a hangerouter. When I was there, I went to Cirque du Soleil, went to see Barbra Streisand, and I went to see Elton John. That was about all the goingout I did. Other than that, all I did in Vegas was play golf. srhoades@aol.com
