November 2013 Culture Alert

This is a very odd November: the month ends with Thanksgiving weekend, so almost all the listed events are before then. (Chanuka coincides with T-day for the 1st time since 1888; this apparently won't happen again for another 77,798 years). But there's still plenty to do in LA this month, including the almost 800 free cultural events listed here: talks, walks, readings, plays, hikes, movies, openings, & concerts. Among the interesting people you can meet around town are Agns Varda, Petula Clark, Jeff Garlin, Ann Rice, Tim Conway, Roy Choi, Corey Feldman, Graham Nash, Randi Zuckerberg, Artie Lange, Giada De Laurentiis, Tori Spelling, Will Ferrell, Mike Tyson, & astronaut Chris Hadfield. A growing number of Day of the Dead fests celebrate life & honor ancestors; there are Veterans Day commemorations, the Great LA Walk from Disney Hall to the ocean, & 80+ classy films at the week-long AFI Fest, free again this year (see afi.com). The DWP celebrates the centennial of the LA Aqueduct; ArtsReStore LA takes over Westwood for the month; & DIY Days returns to LA with 4 free days of events (11/15-18; exact schedule not online at our press time, so go to http://la.diydays.com for details). Museum members: 11/29 & 11/30 are Member Appreciation Days, with reciprocal admission & 20% store discounts at 17 So Cal museums (see http://bit.ly/17vLLba for details). As usual, everything listed is free & open to the public as far as I know. Please call ahead if you dislike surprises, & please note that RSVP means you must reserve a place. Call to verify means I couldnt confirm the event. Some events requiring museum admission are listed, because many of us have memberships. Have a great month & keep in touch - & please get out there & support the arts. Happy Turkey to all! Cheers, Rina
