IMPRESSED CURRENT CP TANK SYSTEM UNDER TANK MATERIALS Materials Required MMO Titanium Ribbon Anode Titanium Conductor Bar Reference Cells and #14 awg yellow RHW Cables Positive #8 awg black HMWPE Cable Connections Titanium Spot Welder

Procedure The under tank catholic protection system materials are to be installed during the construction of the foundation. The ribbon anode, conductor bar, positive connection cables and reference cells are to be installed a minimum of 4 below the final tank base plate level in river washed sand. The system operates better at a depth of 6 and may be installed up to 12 below the base plate. Where there is a secondary containment liner, be it Claymax, HDPE or similar, the cathodic protection system may be installed directly on top of the liner. The foundation sand material is then placed over the top of the CP Tank system. Alternatively the foundation sand may be prepared and compacted to a level at which the CP tank system is to be installed. It is possible to bury the system in the foundation, or simply lay it on top of the sand. After installation of the CP Tank System the foundation contractor should carefully add and compact more sand until the final level is reached. The Ribbon anode is supplied in rolls of approximately 330 length. The Conductor Bar is supplied in rolls of approximately 330 length. Note that both the ribbon anode and the conductor bar can be twisted and do not need to be laid perfectly flat. If the system is being installed on a liner it is required to twist the ribbon to stop the ribbon lying flat on the liner and so to allow both faces of the ribbon better contact with the foundation sand. A minimum of two men are required to lay out the Ribbon anode and conductor bar. Two more men are required to spot weld the ribbon / conductor bar intersections. A measuring wheel (feet) and some spray paint are useful to assist in marking out the system. Mark the center of the tank. Pick a tank north direction. For the purposes of this instruction the anode ribbon will be assumed to run east / west and the conductor bar north / south. Note there is an additional conductor bar through the center in the east / west direction. Using the wheel and spray paint, start at the center of the tank moving in the northerly direction and mark the first east / west ribbon run 2.5 feet from the center and at 5 foot intervals thereafter. From the center moving in the southerly direction mark the first east / west Ribbon run 2.5 feet from the center and thereafter at 5 foot intervals.

Job 2922

At the center mark the first conductor bar run north / south through the Corrosion Engineering & Materials center. Mark the east / west conductor bar run through the center. Mark the additional north / south conductor bar runs at 20 spacing each side (east and west) of the center as shown on the drawing. Mark the ribbon spacing at 2 more locations 25 feet either side of the diametric north south line. This provides three spray marks to lay out the anode ribbon in the correctly spaced straight line. Lay out the anode ribbon on the east / west lines at 5 foot centers. The ends of the ribbon should be cut so that they are within 1 foot of the perimeter of the tank. Lay the conductor bar run in the east / west direction through the center. Lay out the conductor bar runs in the north / south direction through the center and at 20 foot spacing each side. Spot weld the conductor bar and ribbon once (or twice) at every intersection. Weld the conductor bar / conductor bar crossings a minimum of twice at each intersection. Spot weld (a minimum of three welds) the titanium bar at one end of the positive cable connections to the conductor bars at the center and at two more locations either side of center at the conductor bar / conductor bar intersections as shown on the drawing. Install the reference cells at the desired locations (one cell should be placed at the center of the tank). Excavate a 6 deep hole in which to place the cells if in sand Remove the cells from the plastic shipping bags and discard the bags. Soak the cells with water (use 5 gallons of clean, fresh water) and bury them. All the power feeds and reference cell cables should be marked and laid across the tank, as directly as possible to the exit conduit in the ring wall. All wires should be coiled and placed in a protected position outside the ring wall for termination in the junction box at a later date. Extreme care must be taken to prevent metal to metal contact between the anode ribbon / conductor bar and the tank metal bottom, sides or sump.

Subsequent to the construction of the tank, the junction box and rectifier will be installed and all wires connected and terminated. Please refer to the drawings of the wiring required, Drawings #2922-001, 2922-002, 2922-003 and 292-004 apply. The negative connection to the tank shell may be made at an earthing lug welded to the tanks close to the junction box location or the cable may be Cadwelded to the bottom plate outside the shell.

Titanium Ribbon Anode and Conductor Bar

Titanium ribbon anodes are manufactured using ASTM B265 Grade 1 titanium which is coated with Mixed Metal Oxide Coating. The MMO coating consists of IrO2/TA2O5 and is suitable for use in all cathodic protection applications. Mixed metal oxide anodes have an extremely low consumption rate. The titanium substrate remains constant throughout the design life of the anode. Strict quality control procedures applied during the coating process to ensure proper coating adhesion and loading. Production of a quality product is fundamental in every step of the manufacturing process. High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Cable

The cable in cathodic protection systems is a critical component. CEM provides cable manufactured specifically for cathodic protection applications from a variety of cable manufacturers. The industry standard cable for direct burial is a stranded copper conductor covered with an insulation of high molecular weight polyethylene (HMWPE). The thick, tough, insulation provides both electric isolation and mechanical protection. During installation, this cable can withstand considerable mechanical abuse without compromising the conductor. The HMWPE insulation is chemically resistant and protects against most organic and inorganic substances. Application: A direct earth burial DC feeder cable for use in cathodic protection systems, for storage tanks, pipelines, wells, vessels and metallic structures either buried or water submerged. Standards: Conductor - Stranded copper conductor conforms to ASTM Specification B-8. Insulation - Insulation is high molecular weight polyethylene conforming to ASTM D1248, Type 1, Class A, Category 5, Grades E4 & E5. Tensile Strengths Jl, J3. Available with high density polyethylene (Types II, III, IV) Class B & C (all colors).

Permanent Reference Electrodes for Chloride Free Soils

NEW! Moisture Retention Membrane - MRM
Features

Minimum 20 year service life. 8 square inches of sensing surface area gives 5-8 times more surface area than other electrodes. This makes electrode positioning less critical to achieve accurate readings. Will not dry out in desert dry soil, a condition that renders other electrodes ineffective. Cyclical variations in soil conditions, ranging from hydrated to dehydrated, have no adverse effect on the Stelth2 electrode. Electrodes may be taken out of service for extended periods of time and reintroduced into the system without affecting electrode accuracy or ability to reactivate. (Electrode will fire up in less than 5 minutes.)

New! Now two levels of chloride ion trapping technologies are used in the "Stelth 2". First We impregnate a trapping material into the ceramic sensing tube that traps chloride ions before they reach the chemistry of the "Stelth 2" (patent pending). Second We employ a chloride ion trapping system that removes chloride ions that penetrate the CuSO4 chemistry of the "Stelth 2" before these ions can cause damage. Both of these systems have given an additional benefit of lowering the internal resistance of the "Stelth 2" reference electrode. Note Chlorides at levels of only 200 parts per million alter the chemistry of a Cu-CuSO4 reference electrode enough to cause a complete breakdown, resulting in loss of stability and finally a total shutdown. Stelth2 Model SRE-007-CUY Copper-Copper Sulfate (Cu-CuSO4) for Underground and Concrete Service Dimensions 1.5" (3.81 cm) diameter x 6" (15.24 cm) long "space age" ceramic tube with yellow protective caps. Lead Wire 50' (15.24 cm) of #14 RHH-RHW yellow wire. Stability +/- 10 millivolt with 3.0 microamp load. Temperature Range +32 to +135 F (0 to +57.2 C)
