LAB REPORT REACTION RATE

AIM: The purpose of this experiment is to find out what determines the speed of a reaction (in this case, between Hydrochloric Acid and Zinc). Hypothesis: I believe that the most concentrated the HCl is, the faster the reaction will be. The speed of the reaction also depends on the mass of the Zinc used in the experiment. The more mass it has, the longer it will take to fully react. Variables: In this experiment, the factors that we keep constant are the total weight of the Zinc in each test tube(4.0g) and the amount of milliliters of HCl in each test tube(50ml). The dependent variable in this reaction is the time that the reaction will take to occur, because, as stated before, it depends on the two independent variables: zinc(because of its mass) & hydrochloric acid(because of its concentration levels). Materials: The materials used for this experiment to succeed were: - 3 balloons (that were later removed from the experiment due to its lack of efficiency) - 3 test tubes - HCl (concentrates, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2) - 50ml of each - Measuring tape - 120g of Zinc (40 each test tube) Procedure: I am first measuring the Zinc. I now have exactly 40g in each test tube. Next Im going to measure, with the help of the measuring tape, the amount of HCl that I will drop in each test tube. The value will be 50ml ea. Finally, before starting the reaction, it is necessary to label each tube, being test tube number 1 the one with the highest level and test tube number 3 the one with the lowest concentration levels. Everything is ready and now Im going to drop the HCl in each test tube at the same time with the help of a classmate, and will set a timer of 5 minutes. I will also record everything that is happening inside each tube. It already passed 2.5 minutes and we can clearly see that the speed of the reaction in test tube nr.1 is clearly ahead of the other 2, due to the concentration levels in the amount of HCl; its bubbling a lot. Test

tube nr.2 is also going fast, we can already see a lot of bubbles around the Zinc. Meanwhile in test tube nr.3 it is reacting very slowly, with a very little amount of bubbles. It has now passed 5 minutes and Im going to remove the HCl and weight the Zinc. The Zinc in test tube number one lost 0.4g of weight; test tube number two lost 0.2g and test tube number three lost 0.1g. Results: Concentration levels (HCl) 0.2M 0.1M 0.75M Mass before reaction(Zn) 4.0g 4.0g 4.0g Mass after reaction(Zn) 3.6g 3.8g 3.9g Amount of HCl(ml) 50 50 50

This table shows us how the Concentration levels of HCl can affect the speed of the reaction. We can clearly see that the test tube with 0.2M of HCl had a faster reaction, and it dissolved way more Zn in 5 minutes comparing to the other two. Discussion: The aim of this lab experience was to figure out if the concentration of HCl (hydrochloric acid) in each test tube affects the speed of the reaction between HCl and Zinc. I was able to prove that the concentration of HCl does speed up the reaction, but I wasnt able to prove that the more mass the Zinc has, the slower it will be. Conclusion: With this experiment, I proved that a higher concentrated HCl when reacting with Zinc, makes the reaction faster, and the graph that I made before shows us this. For 0.2M of HCl in contact with Zinc for 5 minutes, 4.0g of Zinc went down to 3.6g; for 0.1M of HCl in contact with Zinc for 5 minutes, 4.0g of Zinc went down to 3.8g and for 0.75M of HCl in contact with Zinc for 5 minutes, 4.0g of Zinc went down to 3.9g.
