kolkata's Best Durga Pujas

Durga Puja is organized in large numbers in all corners of Kolkata and in fact it is quite
difficult to cover all on a single day. Durga Puja in Kolkata can broadly be divided into
four parts: East, West, North and South. While South and North host majority of the best
Durga Pujas in Kolkata, some in East and West too attract fair amount of crowd. While
some of the pujas are famous for the idols of the Goddesses that are made by the most
reputed potters in the city, some pujas attract people for the decoration and artworks
inside and outside the pandals. Even there are some pujas where thousands of people
gather at night to enjoy the show of colorful lights. The efforts made by the puja
committees, the potters, the artists and the electricians create an amazing ambiance in and
around the place where the Durga Pujas are held and that’s what attract the people like
magnets. Bengalees living in Kolkata are well aware of the best pujas in the city, but for
those who are not inhabitants of the city, here is a brief description of some of the best
Durga Pujas in Kolkata:

North Kolkata

Mohammad Ali Park

Held inside a large park on mahatma Gandhi Road, Mohhammad Ali park is one of the
oldest Durga Pujas in North Kolkata. Mohammad Ali Park’s Durga Puja is famous for
large and beautiful earthen idol, which is made by Ramesh Paul.

mandap is built every year. College Square’s Durga Puja is famous for its light show.
Different stories, incidents and characters are displayed on electrical light boards and
their reflection on the water of the pool creates a magical atmosphere. Besides, the
beautiful idol speaks about the mastery of Mohan Banshi Rudra Paul.

famous pujas in South Kolkata. Located right on the heart of Gariahat, the nerve center of
the South, Ekdalia Evergreen pulls huge crowd for its large mandap and idol, which again
is a specimen of the artistry of Mohan Banshi Rudra Paul.
