What is a resume?
A resume is a marketing tool, it is your personal advertisement, it used to help you get an interview. It is a one-page (sometimes two-page) documents that briefly highlights your educational background, experience, and skills. It is not a biography of everything that you have done. The most effective resumes must be well written, concise, organized and clearly focused on a specific job title and address the employers stated requirements for the position. The more you know about the duties and skills required for the job and organized your resume around these points the more effective the resume. Keep in mind there is no one correct way to write a resume. It depends on your unique education, experiences, and skills.

General Guidelines
Your rsum has 20-30 seconds to catch an employers eye and get an interview. Make it count!
Length In general, if you are an undergraduate student or recent graduate with modest experience, you want to try to limit your rsum to one page. An employer takes an average of 30 seconds to review your rsum. The less they have to sift through to get to the most relevant information, the better. Paper When printing your rsum for submission by mail or in-person, use high-quality paper in conservative colors (white, ivory, or very pale gray). Do not use paper with visible flecks in it. Use a laser printer to print your document. Header Utilize the same header on all documents (rsum and list of references). Include your name and your complete contact information. Be certain your email address sounds professional (e.g., not prettypinkprincess@whatever.com) and make sure your voicemail message is professional. Do not use your work email address. Put your name at the top of page two on a two-page resume. Font & Styling Use a standard font (e.g., Times New Roman, Arial, Garamond). Avoid casual fonts like Comic Sans. Text size should be 10-11 points. Your name and section headings can and should be a bit larger. Fully utilize styling tools such as bolding, bullets, italics and ALL CAPITALS for ease when skimming. Order Readers lose interest as they read down and across the page. Thus, prioritize information in order of importance, with the most important text up high and to the left where it is most likely to be read. Numbers & Abbreviations Spell out numbers under and including ten; use the numerical form for numbers over and including 11 (as a general rule), unless they are the first words in a sentence. Spell out abbreviations unless they are unquestionably obvious. Format Formulate bulleted statements rather than using paragraphs of text: Use as much white space between sections of writing as possible. Keep sentences as short and direct as possible. Maintain uniformity, such as either using periods or not using them after all bulleted statements. Start each bulleted statement with an action verb. Use present tense verbs for jobs you are still doing, and past tense verbs for tasks you have completed or are no longer doing. Avoid use of the first person (e.g., I, me, my, mine). For example, Organized filing system instead of I organized the filing system.

3|P a g e

Accuracy Proofread for spelling and grammar very carefully! Make sure all information is accurate and truthful. Watch your verb tense: If the accomplishment is completed, it should be past tense. If the task is still underway, it should be present tense. Information to Avoid Do not include personal information such as age, height, weight, health status, marital status, number of children, military classification, photographs, etc. unless it is required for the specific position. Templates and Sample Rsums Templates and sample rsums will give you an idea of what the format of your rsum should look like. However, there is no one right way to write your rsum. You can use a template as a guide, but customize it to fit your needs.

If you would like to have your rsum critiqued utilize our daily walk-in hours, drop off or email your rsum to a staff member or contact us to make an appointment.

Parts of a Resume
Objective An objective is optional. You may find that an objective is good for one version of your resume and not needed for another. The purpose of an objective statement is to let the employer know what position or type of job you are applying for, and your qualifications for that position in a short concise statement. Focus on what you have to offer rather than on what the job can offer you. Employers are not so much interested in what you hope to get out of a job with them so much as they want to know whether you fit their needs. In this section, you want to assert yourself as the best person for the job. Summary of Qualifications This section is also optional. In the interest of space, it is best to include an Objective or Summary of Qualifications not both. A Summary consists of 3-5 concise statements that focus the readers attention on the most important qualities, achievements and abilities you have to offer. The rest of your rsum will need to include information which supports your summary statements. In this section, you want to assert yourself as the best person for the job. Education This section should be listed first on your rsum as long as you are in school (after your Objective or Summary if you choose to include). Begin with your most recent level of education and degree and list in reverse chronological order. Include the name and location of schools, expected date of completion (not dates of attendance), major fields of study, and degrees received. Do not list your high school information unless you are a freshman or sophomore applying for an internship. Your GPA should be included if it is above 3.0. (Most recruiters will assume that it is below 3.0 if they do not see it on your rsum). Honors and awards that are directly related to your academics may also be listed under this section. Experience This section can include full-time, part-time, internship, and volunteer experiences both paid and unpaid. Start with your most recent employer. Give dates of employment, your job title, name of the company, and the companys city and state. This section should detail your accomplishments, transferable skills, and important responsibilities. It should not be a listing of your job duties. Begin each statement using action verbs. See the list of action verbs included in this packet. Avoid Responsible for or Duties Included Use numbers and percentages to provide measurable results when appropriate (e.g., number of people supervised; number of children in classroom; size of event; budget you oversaw, etc.). Use keywords where possible. Activities It is important to show involvement throughout college in areas other than the classroom. This is an optional section where you can list campus activities, as well as job-related professional, humanitarian, or other groups. These activities may be worth mentioning, particularly if you were an officer or were active in some other way. Honors & Awards This section can showcase any special honors and awards you may have received. If the only awards received were in school, put these under the Education section.

4|P a g e

Skills & Certifications List skills such as knowledge of foreign languages, computers (operating systems, relevant applications), and relevant certifications. Other skills or special abilities (e.g., quick-learner, people-oriented, dynamic public speaker) should be demonstrated through your experience section. Other Sections Because each person has diverse experiences and strengths, there are many different categories that can be included in a rsum. Of course, this is not a comprehensive list of all of the sections you might choose to include on your rsum. Ask yourself what you want the employer to know about you, and then be sure to incorporate that information into your rsum. You might also choose to include any of the following sections: Leadership Experience Project Experience or Class Projects Professional Affiliations & Memberships Relevant Coursework Community Service Volunteer Experience Publications & Research Conferences & Presentations References Do not list references or former supervisors on your rsum. You also do not need to write References Available Upon Request on your rsum it is assumed you would provide them if requested. References should be listed on a separate page from your rsum. Try to have a diverse list of 3-5 references that know you in a professional or academic setting (current or previous employers, professors, coaches, colleagues). Be sure to ask permission before listing someone as a reference and provide them with an opportunity to refuse. Provide your references with a copy of your resume and a copy of the job description, if available. It provides them with information about you and will help them to talk to an employer about your qualifications. Remember, no reference is better than a negative one.

Top 10 Resume Mistakes

Before finalizing your rsum, make sure you dont commit any of these mistakes:
1. Failure to customize. Your rsum should be tailored to the targeted opportunity. Be prepared to revise your rsum many times throughout your job search and into your career. Your resume should convey why you are the perfect candidate for a specific job. If you are applying for several different positions, you should adapt your resume to each one. There is nothing wrong with having several different resumes, each specifically crafted for a different type of position. You may even want to change some parts of your resume for each job you apply for. 2. Highlighting job duties instead of accomplishments and transferable skills. Employers dont care as much about what youve done as what youve accomplished in your various activities. Highlight accomplishments and transferable skills. 3. Use of personal pronouns. Eliminate any use of personal pronouns such as I, my, we. 4. A bad objective statement. Give employers something specific and, more importantly, something that focuses on their needs, not just your own. 5. Listing references. References should be listed on separate document. 6. Use of abbreviations. In general, avoid using abbreviations except for two-letter state abbreviations. 7. Inconsistent or unattractive format. Above all, make sure your rsum looks professional. Your resume should have a simple, clean structure and be very easy to read. Be sure bulleted statements are in line, margins are approximately 1 on all sides, spacing between sections is consistent, and headings are easy to find. Use standard fonts, standard 8.5 x 11 paper, and black ink.

5|P a g e

8. Typos and grammatical errors. Your rsum needs to be perfect from a grammatical standpoint. One typo, misspelled word, or grammatical error could eliminate you from consideration. 9. Use of graphics or pictures. Unless you are applying for a job in a creative field, graphics should not be used on a rsum. And your picture should never go on your rsum. If its necessary, include it as an attachment. 10. Failure to include a cover letter. A cover letter should always accompany your rsum. Your cover letter is an introduction to your resume and should clearly articulate why you are the best person for the job. When submitting your resume via email, your email message will serve as your cover letter. See the Cover Letter Guide for tips on creating a cover letter.

Dos & Donts

Do:
Target your rsum to a specific occupation or type of job. Write your rsum as an advertisement. Emphasize your marketable skills and abilities. Order your information with your most important qualifications first. Keep the information on your rsum current. Use solid, round bullets. Start your descriptions with active verbs. Use a laser printer on non-colored paper. Have someone proofread your rsum before sending it.

Dont:
Depend on employers to determine the job for which you qualify. Fold or staple your resume and cover letter Expect employers to spend more than 10 seconds reviewing your rsum at first glance. Use complete sentences. Use personal pronouns such as I, me, or mine. Include negative information. Overlook volunteer experience. Include personal information beyond your name and how to contact you. Be afraid to brag. Lie on your rsum. Depend on job titles to convey the functions that you performed. Depend on spell checker. Mail, e-mail or fax a rsum without a cover letter. Forget to have the Career Services staff critique your rsum.

Resume Formats
Chronological
A chronological rsum starts by listing your work history, with the most recent position listed first. Your jobs are listed in reverse chronological order with your current, or most recent job, first. Employers typically prefer this type of resume because it's easy to see what jobs you have held and when you have worked at them.

Functional
A functional rsum focuses on your skills and experience, rather than on your chronological work history. It is used most often by people who are changing careers or who have gaps in their employment history.

Combination
A combination rsum lists your skills and experience first. Your employment history is listed next. With this type of resume you can highlight the skills you have that are relevant to the job you are applying for, and also provide the

6|P a g e

chronological work history that employers prefer.

Action Verbs
The following are action-oriented verbs that can be used throughout your rsum and personal presentations to convey energy, accomplishments, and skills. Too often, job seekers unconsciously adopt a passive approach to describing their past experiences. Typical of this approach is the phrase "Responsibilities include..." which appears regularly on rsums. However, a prospective employer doesn't want to know what you were supposed to do; he or she needs to know how you discharged the duties! These words should be the lead words in phrases, which tell you what you really did! These phrases will convey what you are capable of taking on in the future. Incidentally, they are often the words employers use when they describe their needs in the positions they have to offer. This list is not all-inclusive, so use your own action verbs when you don't find the right words here. REMEMBER: if you are currently doing the task, keep the action verb in present tense. Try not to end the action verb using ing.

Resume Tips
Electronic Submission: Many companies today request that rsums be sent to them electronically. Follow the companys instructions regarding the submission process. If the companys preferences are not stated, submit your cover letter as the body of the e-mail and make the rsum document the attachment. Ask the reader to let you know if they are unable to open your attachment. Scannable Rsums: A substantial number of companies in the United States use scanners to input rsums into a database. These rsums will not be read by a person prior to being scanned so keep the following in mind: o Scanners pay attention to key words, especially industry terminology found in the job description. o Use only white paper. o Make sure your name is at the top of each page. o Scanners cannot read lines, borders, multiple columns, italics, or underlining. o Stick with simple fonts like Times New Roman or Courier, and keep the font size between 10 and 14.

Other Tips: 10-12 point font; Times New Roman this tends to look the best. Use good quality resume paper (white, off-white, ivory, or a subtle grey).

7|P a g e

Be consistent throughout your resume, make sure your dates are written in the same format and that your sections and fonts are consistent. Consider the overall aesthetics of your resume use blank space between sections for easy reading and make sure bullets line up If your resume is more than 1 page, make it at least 1 pages so it doesnt leave a virtually empty page. Also, put your name on the second page along with page 2 and use the bottom have of the 2nd page for your reference list. Customize your resume to fit each employer. Look for ways to target your resume to the specific needs of the employer. This will take some research on your part. Always send a cover letter with each resume. Anything you bold, italicize, or put in all CAPS will stand out. Use these sparingly. Dont include anything that you dont feel comfortable explaining in an interview. Always follow-up the sending of your resume by contacting the employer to ensure they have received your materials and to ask for an interview. The Chronological format is preferred by employers (start with most recent experience). Only use a Functional format if youre sure a skills-oriented format would be an advantage! Proofread; using a spell checker is not enough. Also, cut out all unnecessary words and phrases then, go through and do it again. Make sure every word in your resume (and cover letter) has a purpose and is adding value.

Cover Letters
What is a Cover Letter?
A well-written cover letter should always accompany your rsum. The cover letter gives you the opportunity to draw an employers attention to specific skills and experience outlined in your rsum, convey your research and knowledge of the organization, and expand upon information which particularly matches you to the position for which you wish to be considered. If you are emailing your rsum to a potential employer, your email message can serve as your cover letter. Remember that the cover letter is a reflection of your writing skills, so take time and care to proofread your document.

Format & Content

Cover letters should be one page in length, and three to four paragraphs long. The structure of the cover letter typically consists of an introductory paragraph, a middle paragraph identifying your specific strengths matched to the employers needs, and a concluding paragraph restating your interest in the position and requesting an interview. They should be written in professional business format and printed on the same paper as the rsum. Cover letters are not form letters. They should be targeted to each position and should address the specific employers qualifications. Cover letters are also more effective when addressed to an actual person rather than Dear Sir or Madam or To Whom It May Concern. The heading of the letter should include your return address, the date, the person you are sending the letter to, and the business address. That will be followed up by a proper salutation (e.g., Dear Mr. Jones). Paragraph 1 Explain your Purpose Clearly identify the position for which you are applying or why you would be the right candidate for a specific job. If answering an ad or a job posting, state where you heard about the opening. If someone referred you to the position, mention that persons name. If you do not know whether the employer has an opening, indicate the type of position you are seeking. Paragraph 2 Your Sales Pitch Explain your qualifications and why you are interested in the position and the company. Generate the readers interest in you by referring to an enclosed resume. Do not repeat your rsum; rather, highlight specific examples of your experience and qualifications as they relate to the desired position. Paragraph 3 Your Plan of Action Identify what you will do next.

8|P a g e

Make a request for an interview. If you know you will follow up, then say so. Keep this paragraph short, positive and avoid sounding aggressive or pushy in tone. Thank them for their time and indicate your eagerness to speak with them. Include your contact information (phone and email address).

At the end, you must include a signature block. Be sure to sign the letter before it is mailed or faxed!

9066 Herty Street Apt C Statesboro, Georgia 30458 September 2, 2011 Ms. Jane Grey Director of Personnel Large Bank Corporation 111 North Street Atlanta, GA 32121 Dear Ms. Grey: I am writing to express my interest in the marketing research position you advertised in the August 20th edition of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. With my undergraduate research background, my training in psychology and sociology, and my work experience. I believe I could make a valuable contribution to Large National Bank Corporation in this position. In May 2012, I will complete a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from Georgia Southern University. As part of the requirements for this degree, I am involved in a senior marketing research project that has given me experience interviewing and surveying research subjects and assisting with the analysis of the data collected. I also have completed a course in statistics and research methods. In additional to academic work, my experience also includes working part-time as a bookkeeper in a small independently owned, restaurant with an annual budget of approximately $150,000. Because of the small size of the business, I have been exposed to and participated in most aspects of managing a business, including advertising and marketing. As the bookkeeper, I produced monthly sales reports that allow the owners to project seasonal inventory needs. I also assisted with the development of ideas for special promotional events and calculated sales proceeds after each event in order to evaluate its success. I have enclosed my resume with additional information about my qualifications. I believe that the combination of my business experience and social science research training is well-suited to the marketing research position you described. Would you please consider my request for a personal interview to discuss my qualifications and to learn more about this opportunity? I shall call you during the week of October 23rd to discuss further. Should you need to reach me, please feel free to contact me at 912-555-1212 or via email at johnsmith@georgiasouthern.edu. Sincerely,

John Smith

9066 Herty Street Apt C Statesboro, Georgia 30458 September 2, 2011 Ms. Katherine Ortiz Director of Development WLMR - Channel 57 10656 Columbia Parkway Atlanta, GA 31301 Dear Ms. Ortiz: It was indeed a pleasure meeting with you and your development team on August 15 to discuss your needs for an Assistant Director of Development. I cannot thank you enough for your decision to offer me the position; however, at this time I am unable to accept your offer of employment. As I discussed with you during our meeting, I have a strong interest in international communications and specifically in developing relationships with international stations. After careful consideration, I have realized that I would be better suited for a position that concentrates on international markets in addition to domestic markets. Should a position that would concentrate on international markets become available, I would be pleased to be among those considered for the opening. You have a fine organization and I would enjoy being a part of it. Best wishes in your search. Sincerely,
