rect contact with the North Vietnamese Army, he did become friends with some of the soldiers who surrendered. "There was one guy who worked for me that had surrendered," he said. " I called him Joe. He was taught English so he could be an interpreter for us." After serving for one year at Vietnam, Smith returned to Saltillo for a 30day vacation. "I was getting paid while at Nam so I was sending my money back home," he said. "There was nothing there to spend it on. When I went back home for my 30-day vacation I bought a car and just hung out until it was time for me to leave again." Smith spent his next six months in Berlin, where he had light duty. "My contract required that I had two years of active duty," Smith said. " I spent one year in Vietnam and six months in Germany. I cam back home still in the service but with inactive duties. I was not officially discharged until 1971." But like many returning soldiers of that war, he found that the home front wasnt

very friendly. "Coming back home was hard because we did not come home to any parade or anything like that," he said. "People were not fond of us. They did not welcome us home." But he did come home with recognition for his valor. He received two bronze stars for heroism, a subject that he keeps to himself. "That is something I do not talk about, he said, tears in his eyes. To me those medals mean nothing. The guys that deserve this stuff are not alive. I am just fortunate that I am alive." After the military, Smith worked in the grocery store business for 25 years for Tate's Big Star, Todd's Big Star and Turner's Big Star. He also worked for the American Legion for 10 years. He now owns a dry cleaners in Saltillo. Smith has two sons: Jeff, 28, and Stephen, 17, who pitches for the Saltillo High School baseball team. "It took me over 30 years to get over that war," he said. " I am good now. I love spending time with my kids and granddaughter."
