Objective: Model and solve simple problems involving absolute value.

What is the absolute value of an integer?

 How is absolute value represented?

If there are operations inside of the absolute value sign, what do you do?

What are some real-life situations that require use of integers?

Vocabulary:
Absolute value – the distance between a number and zero (0)
Integers Number line Positive number

Opposites Expression Negative number

Distance - length between two things

Direction - the way in which somebody or something goes, points, or faces

Circle the distances and box the direction

20 miles south 100 miles southwest

3 cm to the right 2.5 inches to the left

44 feet north 8 yards below sea-level

Absolute value doesn’t care about direction (positive or negative), only distance!

Avenues = Negative 0 = Central Ave. Streets = Positive

Phoenix Streets

Finding absolute value:

Ex) |- 50| = Steps
 1) Find the distance between the number and zero (0).

Note: any negatives inside the absolute value are

cancelled out.

Find the absolute value of the following:

1) |- 30 | 2) |40| 3) |124| 4) |- 9|

5) |11| 6) |- 18| 7) | 90| 8) |- 1|

9) |- 5.2| 10) |10.3| 11) |100| 12) |- 100|

13) |77| 14) |- 92|

Line Up Activity
Your challenge is to line up in order from least to
greatest WITHOUT talking!

*Sometimes we need to find absolute value when we see vertical bars on either
side of an expression!

Finding absolute value of expressions:

Ex) | 40 – 30 | = Steps
 1) Use order of operations to simplify the
expression inside the absolute value to one
single number
 2) Find the distance between the number and
zero (0).
Note: any negatives inside the absolute value
are cancelled out.

Find the absolute value of the following:

1) | 40 – 20 | 2) | 6 – 6| 3) | 4 • 3|

4) | 124 + 9| 5) | 14 –15| 6) | 20- 18|

7) | 12 + 9| 8) | 7.8 – 3| 9) | 0 • 3|

10) | 0 – 100| 11) | 0 – 10| 12) | 0 – 25|

13) | 3+10| 14) | 5(0 +2)|

Finding absolute value of with negatives outside:
Ex) -| 4 – 5 | = Steps
 1) Use order of operations to simplify the
expression inside the absolute value to one
single number
 2) Find the distance between the number and
zero (0).
 3) A negative outside the absolute value
remains, making the value negative.

Find the absolute value of the following:

1) - | 40 – 2 | 2) - | 6 – 0| 3) - | 4 • 3|

4) - | 12 + 9| 5) - | –15| 6) - | 20- 1|

7) - | 12 + 9| 8) - | 7.8 – 3| 9) - | 0 • 3|

10) - |– 100| 11) - | 0 – 10| 12) - | 0 – 25|

13) - | 10| 14) - | 5(2 +2)|

Partner Talk: With your partner explain the concept of

absolute value.

Put it in your own words:

DIRECTIONS: Select one of the choices provided and write it on the line next to the
corresponding number.

1) Which statement is true about the given numbers?

Column A Column B
-|6| |-6|
A The number in column A is greater.
B The number in column B is greater.
C The two numbers are equal.
D The relationship cannot be determined from the given information.

2) Which expression has the smallest value?

A |-5|
B |-35|
C |6|
D |3|

3) Which expression has the smallest value?

A |-1|
B -|-4|
C 0
D -|7|

4) Which expression has the smallest value?

A |15|
B |-40|
C -|6|
D |38|

5) Which expression has the smallest value?

A -|-12|
B -|4|
C 0
D -|-20|

6) Which expression has the greatest value?

A 0
B |-4|
C -|6|
D -|38|
Find the Fi ction Set A
You will be given 3 statements. Determine which of
the statements is the “fiction”.

DIRECTIONS: Consider whether the statements below are True or False. In the
corresponding box indicate a T for TRUE or an F for FALSE.

1) |-9| = |9| True/False

2) |-7.5| = -|7.5| True/False

3) -|-12| is larger than -|12| True/False

4) |18 - 2| - |12 - 1| = 5 True/False

5) Opposite numbers have equivalent absolute values. True/False

6) -|-10| is larger than -|10| True/False

7) | - 5| - |2 - 1| = 5 True/False

8) The absolute value of a number is its distance from True/False

zero times 4.

Using Visuals to Solve for Absolute Value

Directions: Draw a picture of each situation below to help solve the problem. Use the
picture to develop an equation to represent the situation.
