My Dear People:
Not too long ago a parent of a child, who has
fallen from the faith, told me how much that
parent regrets not sending her children for
religious instructions. She thought the child
would pick up the faith simply by going to
Mass on Sundays. She is not the only parent
who suffers remorse after the children have
left the faith. Parents incur a serious
obligation to raise the children in the faith
and if they are not going to a Catholic school
they need instructions K-12! The vast
majority of you send your children on Sunday
mornings and the children learn and
appreciate the faith.
The greatest challenge for parents is when
the teenagers hit the age of the “Declaration
of Independence.” One noted family
counselor once said… “if the parents can
only survive those teenage years of their
children.” It is really not that bad! Every now
and then teens must be given a review of the
4th commandment: HONOR THY FATHER
AND THY MOTHER. When the parents send
their children, teens need to go without
confrontation!
Unfortunately, after 8th grade Confirmation
many believe they no longer need religious
instructions. Some parishes actually
postpone Confirmation to the end of the 10th
grade to keep the teens under instructions.
The knowledge of our faith cannot be learned
only once. We are forgetful people; it must
be relearned and so imbued in our system
that it is second nature to us.
Next Sunday, our High School Youth program
starts the year with the 6:00 p.m. Mass. Our
program is centered around catechetical
instructions, social, and prayer. Going
through life it helps our faith greatly if our
friends share our faith. One of the purposes
is for our youth to meet and socialize with
members of their own faith; it helps them
faith. One of the memorable moments of the
retreat our youth attended in Atlanta recently
was praying together. This is what is
planned for our youth as well as instruction
and the social. For teens, prayer seems to
come easier when praying with others,
especially with their peers. It is not just
learning the faith; it is living the faith that we
have programmed in our Youth Ministry
program.
Parents who love the faith and see their
children leaving the faith suffer a heart
rendering experience. …and the regret that
when the teens were in the formative years
of high school, as parents, they did not do
everything to encourage the teen’s faith.
The schedule for the Youth meetings on
Sundays nights is that happy blend between
the catechetical, social, and prayer. I just
don’t see how parents can skip the Sunday
evening religious activities for their teens
without good reasons. I beg our teenagers
to give the program a try at least for a couple
of months…and see the religious benefits
that come from this. Parents take seriously
the obligation to educate your children ages
1-12 grades in the faith. No one wants life-
long or longer regrets.
