Session 3

Whats New in Revit Structure 2013

Desire Mackey, Martin/Martin, Inc.

Class Description:
This session will present the new features that specifically relate to Revit Structure users. Some of the features new to Revit

About the Speaker:

Desire (Dezi) received her bachelor's degree from University of California, Davis and her master's degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and now is a practicing structural engineer at Martin/Martin in Denver, Colorado. In the past several years she has been a regular Autodesk University speaker and has spoken at Revit Technology Conference USA. In addition she is the President of the Denver Revit Users Group, the Chair of the Structural Engineers Association of Colorado's BIM committee, and she is currently serving as an AUGI board member as well as Treasurer. Finally, she also acts as a partner in her husband's BIM consulting company, BD Mackey Consulting. Notable Platform "Productivity and Functionality" Features

Dimensions
Diameter dimension type with diameter symbol, but the symbol has to be copied in - no "alt +" shortcuts Split dimension chains Equality formula can be added to dimension strings, i.e. 3 @ 3"

View Templates
Discipline filter drop down list to sort view templates Associate view templates with view types/new views as they are created Underlay options within the templates Sort project browser based on view templates Any changes in the view template pushes through to the views that are dependent on the template Views that are dependent on view templates are "locked down". The only way to change visibility settings is to remove the template or remove the dependency

Material Properties
New interface and dialogs - a little confusing and time consuming Thermal and additional structural properties can now be assigned to materials

Miscellaneous
Ghosted Surfaces is no longer a visual style option, also no longer a check box in visibility graphics Transparent is no longer a check box in visibility graphics, but now a percentage slider override Project browser is now searchable, but it is not case sensitive! View references can now reference any view and be placed in any view (but not a schedule, and not on a sheet)

Structural Elements
Component-Based Stairs
Stringers can now be changed to any member instead of only unintelligent rectangular shapes Direct manipulation (instead on having to enter sketch mode) of stair elements Manipulation of sub-elements is sort similar to a truss but not as easy, for lack of a better analogy New subcategories in Visibility Graphics (undocumented)

Parts
Can now merge, exclude and restore parts Divide parts with a gap or with custom profiles More elements can now be divided into parts - beams and columns Linked model divisions and manipulation

Assemblies
Assembly views can now be placed on regular (non-assembly sheets) Elements can now be added or removed from assemblies Assemblies have an origin that is visible and editable in the edit mode The origin determines the default orientation of assembly views - the origin can be rotated to suit

Grids
Grids can now be multi-segmented Caution: may cause issues in section and elevation views Caution #2: elbows added to the ends of grids can never become perfectly straight again/will never get the proper line type/pattern spacing again

Reinforcement
Area and Path reinforcement similar to beam systems now in that they host structural rebar families Now snaps to the inside edge of fillets and hooks instead of snapping to the cover and overlapping bars

Analytical Enhancements
Analytical Model
Direct manipulation of slab edges - analytical slab edge independent from physical Direct manipulation of openings - can ignore openings in the analytical floor, analytical edges and corners of openings can be manipulated independently from the physical

Analytical Links
"Rigid links" are now "Analytical Links" Now completely independent from other elements Links are automatically placed but can now be manipulated, turned off, etc. Links can be created within analytical adjust, between two nodes only

Autodesk 360 Structural Analysis

Send analytical runs to the cloud Simultaneously perform static analyses and model in Revit Nonfictions when analysis is complete Analysis results can be viewed within Revit Enhancements in interoperability with Robot Structural Analysis

Undocumented Features, Quirks and Frustrations

Grid head elbows, view references and material property frustration mentioned above Cannot temporarily hide categories in views that are dependent on view templates Enhanced control on view templates is a double edged sword - more control and continuity/uniformity, but also fewer quick visibility changes. The solution will likely be more working views 3D orbit pivot point "gets stuck" on last element that was selected. Fix it by clicking on the view cube or closing and reopening the view "Override graphics in view: by category" now prompts a dialogue box instead of visibility graphics Can now have multiple floor plan types, i.e. Structural Plans, Enlarged Plans, etc. Then can sort plan views via type similarly to other views "Application menu: New" prompts the user for a template instead of automatically using the default template and includes up to five template options instead of having to browse to a template In the recent files view, the same five templates can be listed below the "New" and "Open" options, again preventing the user from having to browse to a template
