Objectives: Given the opportunity to learn about emotions, the children will: o Empathize with classmates emotions o Learn that many people experience the same emotions that they do o Begin to develop self efficacy GLCEs: o 4.1 Identify and describe different kinds of feelings. o 4.4 Demonstrate the ability to recognize and express a variety of feelings appropriately. o 4.5 Identify and demonstrate strategies to manage strong feelings. Developmental Prerequisites: o Know what emotions are o What kinds of emotions we have Materials: o White paper o Smiley Faces representing each emotion (have emotion written on the bottom) o Crayons o Colored pencils Main Lesson: o Attention Getter 1. Call all the kids to the circle area and start making faces These faces should depict emotions such as happy, sad, surprised, ect. This draws the kids in and will make them want to know what youre doing o Procedures/Questioning 2. When it seems like youve grabbed their attention, begin with by saying: Were playing a game, Im going to make a face and I want you to tell me how Im feeling. If I smile like this *smile very big* you might say Im happy. I expect you all to be sitting flat on your floor space. Raise your hand when you think you know the answer, do not blurt out your answerwait until I call on you. 3. Have the children try to guess the name of the feelings you are trying to express, use the smiley faces. Happy Surprised Mad Sad Excited *Have the children make the faces with you. 4. Ask the children the following questions after playing this game: When do you feel ______? Show me (without using words) what you do when you are feeling _______? What feeling is the easiest to tell someone about? Hardest?

5. Expectations: When you get your white piece of paper write your name on the top On the white paper draw of a time when you felt _______. (give each student an emotion) Use only crayons and colored pencils to draw your picture. When youre done, leave it on your desk. 6. Pass out white paper 7. Get out crayons and colored pencils 8. Let children work on their pictures. Walk around the room encouraging individual ideas and drawings. Simplification: If the children cant tell from just facial expressions what emotion you are presenting add exaggerated body movements as an aid. If children seem to be struggling during the discussion assign them the emotion of happy for their drawingit is the easiest for kids to draw. Extension: Have children add more detail to their drawings, such as a setting. Maybe have them develop a story about an experience theyve had with their character in their drawing. Evaluation: I will check to see the childrens reaction to their classmates presentations of their pictures and see if there are any connections made between students while presenting.
