Parents Newsletter

Issue I. Volume I.

Dear Parents, Before continuing on with this letter, I would like to congratulate you on the great and amazing gentleman you have raised. Kappa Alpha Order is one of the largest and oldest national social fraternities that centers on gentility and chivalry. We look for well-rounded men who display our values of reverence, gentility, service, leadership, knowledge, perseverance, and excellence and your son has displayed these principles. You may have heard your son talk about Kappa Alpha Order but you may also have some questions about what we do and who we are. The purpose of this letter is to inform you about our fraternity and about what is going on. Kappa Alpha Order, also referred to as KA or The Order, was originally founded in 1865 in Washington College in Lexington, VA. Since then, the fraternity has grown across the nation with very few chapters in the west coast. The San Diego State chapter came back in the spring semester of 2013 and ever since, we have been working together to grow and build our fraternity. One of our main goals is to change the reputation of Greek life at SDSU. We will do this by participating in service projects, building relations with other student organizations, and by ensuring that our men live up to our values and display them on a daily basis. We are also in the process of becoming a chartered chapter by the national office. These next few months will continue to be busy as we complete requirements and prepare for chartering. In addition, we are interested in starting a parents club and having more parent involvement with the chapter. SDSUs core philosophy is that parents contribute to student success. We highly encourage parents to become involved not only in the Aztec community but also with the San Diego State KA chapter. Over the next few months we will be establishing this club and start planning events for our members and their parents. Youll be able to find more information in the following sections. Also, be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for recent updates on our chapter. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me by email (sdsu.ka.num.5@gmail.com). Best Regards, Jesse Higareda Number V

Fall 2013 Induction Ceremony

KA in the Community
Greek organizations take a major role when it comes to serving the community and Kappa Alpha has participated in some community service events over the course of the semester. At the start of the fall semester, our brothers helped with freshman move in day. In addition, we participated in the Aztecs Rock Hunger campaign during Homecoming and recently, some of our brothers participated in the Aztec Unity Project in which they helped clean a local river. Our brothers are expected to dedicate 20 hours of service during each semester. This is a great way to learn about helping others and the importance of service before self. In addition, we are building connections with other organizations. Weve baked cookies for sororities and have had events with other fraternities. We hope to continue these relationships as we progress in the future.

Academics
Finals are closely approaching and we are pushing our gentlemen to have a 3.0 term GPA and as a chapter we have set a goal to have a chapter cumulative GPA of a 3.2. We are encouraging our brothers to form study groups and prepare for final examinations. We always let our members know that they are students before anything else. Academic success is highly important to us.

Parents Club
In order to have a closer relationship with our parents and continue to have that ongoing support, the San Diego State KA chapter is starting up a Parents Club. This club will consist of officers and members that want to contribute to the success of their sons experience while in this fraternity. Parents are a valuable resource and offer continuous support. This club will work together to plan events or contribute to the well-being of our chapter in different ways such as fundraisers, collaborative events, and more. During fall 2014, we will have a chapter house and we will be needing help with many things. Anyone that is interested in being a part of this club please be sure to fill out the interest form below and email it in to our Number V, Jesse Higareda.
