Evaluating Media Preliminary Task Section 1 Filming Process What Went Well? I think we picked up sound quite well. We used the boom mic effectively so that we could pick up sound without the boom getting in the shot. We also used a variety of shots (such as a wide shot and a close up) all of which were effective in the task set. We also had good continuity as we made sure everything was in the right position between cuts. What Mistakes Did You Make? As we cut between sentences of the newsreader there was one shot when the camera moved quite a lot (0.55 seconds). We also did a first attempt where we did not meet the brief so we had to re-film. What Have You Learnt To Take Forward to Your Main Task? I have learnt that you need to read the brief carefully so you can meet every aspect of it. Ive also learnt to watch the clips as your filming so that if you make a mistake you can re-film it.
This is a mistake we made (wonky shot)

Section 2 Meeting the Brief Originally we did not meet the brief. Although we showed the character walking through the door we did not use shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule. This was because the 2 characters were having a conversation but were never in the same shot. This meant we had to re-do the task. This time we kept the character walking through the door and used an over the shoulder shot (OTS) using shot/reverse shot while keeping the 180-degree rule. We also made the task interesting by making it in to a news-story comedy. Section 3 Technical Skills We did not use titles for our task. We did however edit appropriately. This is shown when the newsreader talks to the side we edited the volume to make it sound like he is whispering (at 0.27 and 0.32). We also used dissolves effectively when we did not want normal cuts. For example when the newsreader is talking we used film dissolve to make the cut less obvious (see 0.41 and 0.54). We also used an additive dissolve for dramatic effect when the studio guest starts to run (see 1.46). Throughout the task we kept it relevant to the brief. There was one instance when the camera was in the wrong place (at 0.55). We did use a variety of shots. We used a medium shot of the door to start and then

a panning shot on the other side of the door to the newsreaders seat. We then used a medium shot of the newsreader when he is talking. We also used an OTS shot while keeping within the 180-degree rule (shown at 1.02 and 1.08). We also used a slow zoom (at 1.30) to add to the tension of the situation. We also used a tracking shot at 1.47-2.08 to track This displays the film dissolve the studio guest running. Some of our mise-en-scene was effective. The reporter was always in front of the interactive whiteboard which would be similar in a news situation. However we did sometimes get the computer in shot (such as at 1.29) we also get the filing cabinet in shot (at 0.08). I do think however it was the most suitable place we could film. There were several edits with meaning for a viewer. We cut between the studio guest and the newsreader OTS so you could see who was talking. We also used an additive dissolve (at 1.46) to change from the film dissolve we had been using to cut for the newsreader. This suggested to the viewer something else was going to happen.
