Lap top computer charger and possible fault fixing

.
Use this information on your own risk. I do not accept any responsibility.

2 months ago my laptop charger died and I had to buy a new one.
I opened the faulty one and fixed the fault. Wrote this article, described the fault and how to
fix it. Hope to be useful.

In my country we buy charger according to output voltages and currents and socket size.

It is possible to see a little bit higher voltage than standard voltages said on charger.
No problem.
For example instead of 19 v you see 19.8 or something near this. Or instead of 14 v
you see 14.9.
These are normal. Because these chargers are switching type so some ripples may vary
Measured voltage.
But lower voltages mean the charger is faulty and is not ok.
For example instead of 19 v if you see 18 that means charger in not well and is faulty.

Laptop chargers have 2 output voltages. Main one is written on box.

Usually switching power supplies damage by 2 reasons:
1- Drawing extra current beyond its capacity because of damaged batteries or
Short connection between output wires.
2- Appearing unwanted signals such as noise in live line.
Some kinds of noises in the live line can change switching power supply behavior
Even for some seconds and destroy charger.
For example here loose output wire caused short connection inside of charger
and damaged it.

.
.

.
In this part had short connection between wires on pcb and consumed extra currents.

.
Opened charger for fixing.

.....
. .
After opening plastic box you will see aluminum cover. This AL cover is used to protect
other devices such as TV Radio-satellite receiver, from noise that this types of charger
produce.

.
.
.
For opening AL cover consider that the AL cover is connected to PCB via 2 or more points.
de-solder those points and remove AL cover slowly and carefully.

. .
.
After AL cover you see card-board cover. This is for to isolate pcb from AL cover.
Easy to remove.

.
This is pcb.

.
This is components side but after I fixed problem.
Transistor shape has been changed because it was faulty.

.

.
.
As you know the base of such this switching charger is producing fixed frequency signal
But with variable pulse width. (pwm)
To derive signal usually power mos-fet transistors are used.
If pulse width lasts more than standard or by some reasons extra currents pass charger,
These transistors will fail and damage very fast and usually other components do not destroy.
It is enough to replace those faulty transistors with proper one.

.
This type power mos-fet is high current and voltage.
In my charger damaged transistor was 11N60C3.
N-channel power mos-fet, 650 volts 11 amperes. Plastic body.
I couldn't find same number in my city so I used a similar but weaker transistor instead.

BUZ80 .
6 800 .
I had to use BUZ80 with metal body.
BUZ80 is 6 amperes and 800 volts but same pins order.

.
.
I had to isolate metal body.

As I said loose output cable caused short connection inside charger between output wires.
I de-soldered them to clean pcb.
Remember wires orders. It is better to write somewhere if you want to disconnect them.

.
These wires had short connection together and caused transistor damage.

There are 2 shottkey diodes on pcb .
Normally they do not damage.

Now I test repaired charger.

Many of components in this charger have high voltage.

For example in my city is 220 volts. Perhaps in your city same or 110 volts.
No differences. Both are dangerous.
This charger does not have any fuse for safety.
So if you want to test it with live line, please ask expert people to help you.
Some capacitors store current for some minutes even after the device is off.
Be careful.
Do not test it without safety.

. .
Without load numbers are ok.
My voltmeter is inaccurate so caused some extra reading.

.
.
By using some car ceiling 24 volts lamps, I made load for repaired charger to see
If output voltage will stay steady or not.
As you see it is ok.

. 5 24.
. 500
These are 24 volts 5 watt lamps and consumed approx 500 mAh.
They were enough to test charger function.

.

. 14 15 .
Please remember that the needle inside socket has voltages between 14 to 15 volts.
But it is low current and if you connect a lamp, it won't light.
I don't know what the purpose of these voltages is.
But between 14 to 15 is ok.

.
) ( .
.
. .
There is a potentiometer on the board. Suppose to adjust output voltages. Like fine tuning.
I turned it to left and right but no change at output voltages.
So turned it back to original position.

. . . .
Ok. Finished. Charger repaired. Cover it as you opened. Seal it and use it.

. . .
.
Usually in switching chargers there is one power mos-fet transistor.
Test it. If it was faulty, try to find same transistor.
If couldn't, try to find at least nearest substitution.
Over all I spent 1$ and 2 days to repair it.
It was very hard to open plastic cover.
I suggest you to buy a new and standard charger unless you have to repair it.
,.
Thank you for your time.
