Newman English 101: Rhetoric 16 September 2013 Statement of Scope for the Annotated Bibliography Out of many topics that Congress consistently discusses, immigration is always one that gets a lot of buzz. With the discussion of immigration comes jobs. Americans are always concerned with immigrants coming to America and taking jobs. However, what many Americans dont realize is that most of the jobs that immigrants do are the jobs that the Americans wont. This is shown in Gabriel Thompsons novel, Working in the Shadows: A Year Doing the Jobs that Most Americans Wont Do. Thompson is the only white person willing to even give these jobs a try. Since this is such a controversial issue, many people have many different views on immigration reform and immigrants taking American jobs. By allowing immigrants to come and take the jobs that Americans will not fill, we can stimulate the economy as well as avoid taking jobs from legal American citizens. This essay will explore the allowance of illegal immigrants into America to fulfill the position of a job in which Americans will not take for a certain period of time. I will address the different views on this subject, like who thinks this is a good idea, or who thinks this is not a good idea. I will address why it is a good idea that we allow these immigrants in to do these jobs. Finally I will explain why people feel otherwise about this topic. This selected bibliography includes sources that include presidential speeches, editorials, as well as facts and research supporting an argument. The editorial by Duckworth argues that allowing immigrants to do these jobs is a bad thing. On the other end, the article by McClatchy talks about how employers hire illegal immigrants and then use the fact that they are illegal against them. The speech given by George Bush is an argument for the immigration reform. Similarly, the article from Moore as well as the article from The Kiplinger Letter are also in support of the reform, both arguing that it would be good and help stimulate the economy.

Annotated Bibliography Bush, George W. "Remarks on Immigration Reform." Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents 12 Jan. 2004: 25. elibrary. Web. 16 Sept. 2013. This is a speech given by George W. Bush in 2004 to Congress proposing new rules about immigration reform. He feels as though we should allow people into our country that are willing to fill positions in jobs that Americans are not willing to fill. He believes that the borders should be open to people who are coming for legal travel and honest trade, but keep out the people who are criminals, drug-traffickers and terrorists. He wants to allow incentives to these immigrants to return permanently back to their home countries after their period of work in the US is over. These rules would not allow for these immigrants that are not legal to come and take jobs that legal American citizens or legal immigrants wish to take. Once these workers have completed their alloted time doing their job, they can apply to become a legal citizen if they wish. He hopes that this new set of rules will eliminate illegal immigrants coming and taking American jobs and to establish a strong relation with Mexico.

Duckworth, Jack. "Stop Rewarding Illegal Immigration." Washington Times 8 July 2013: n. pag. elibrary. Web. 16 Sept. 2013. This is a complaint written in to the Washington Times about Congress allowing immigrants over to America to work. He believes that allowing certain immigrants to come and do these jobs will cause a wave of other illegal immigrants to come over whom are not planning on working. He sees allowing them to come over illegally and giving them jobs is a way of rewarding them, which will cause

Belfield 3 them to keep coming back and try to permanently stay in America. He feels as though these immigrants are taking American jobs and he is angry about it.

"Good News for a Worker-Starved Community." Kiplinger Letter 20 Oct. 2000: n. pag. elibrary. Web. 16 Sept. 2013. This source states that immigration reform is coming and that this is a good thing for businesses. The author states that this should not be viewed as immigrants taking American jobs, but instead as new union recruits. The author runs a list of things that this new reform is going to cover. They finish by saying that foreign workers will be "needed and welcomed for years to come."

McClatchy. "Watchdog Group Says System Allows Employers to Take Advantage of Immigrant Workers." Tovin Lapan Las Vegas Sun 27 Feb. 2013: n. pag. elibrary. Web. 16 Sept. 2013. This article talks about how employers hire illegal immigrants so that they can pay them less money than legal US citizens, as well as being able to hold the fact that they are illegal over them. If the workers are not doing something the employer wants them to, or say something against the company, the employer turns right back around and tells immigration authorities on them. The problem is, the companies do not get in trouble for having hiring these workers. They don't have to pay them as much as the other workers, and when they complain or say something, is when the company turns them in. Then, these illegal immigrants cannot provide proper paperwork, and they are sent right back to Mexico where they must pay many fines, and no longer have a job to support themselves or their family.

Belfield 4 Moore, Stephen. "The Economics of the Melting Pot." Chief Executive: n. pag. elibrary. Web. 16 Sept. 2013. In this editorial, Moore answers the question "How have the 25 million immigrants arriving in America since 1980 affected the employment equation?" He supports the idea that without immigrants, business in America would not be the same. Many companies were started by immigrants, and many of these are the largest, most profitable businesses. However, he does address the fact that although immigrants can come and help do these jobs, that does not mean that economic growth is always shown. He believes that allowing immigrants to come do American jobs not only stimulates our economy, but also helps them out in supporting their families.
