Academic Integrity and Policy on Cheating Students must adhere to the guidelines regarding academic integrity as described in the UIC Student Handbook and the UIC Undergraduate Catalog. Academic dishonesty, as defined therein, will not be tolerated. Any student who admits to, or is proven to have committed, an act of academic dishonesty on any quiz or examination, will receive a score of Zero for the test and will automatically fail the course. In addition, a letter describing the incident will be sent to the head of the chemistry department and to the dean of the college.

1. Hemoglobin plays a part in a series of equilibrium involving protonation-deprotonation and oxygenationdeoxygenation. The overall reaction is approximately as follow: HbH+ (aq) + O2 (aq) HbO2 (aq) + H+ (aq)

where Hb stands for hemoglobin, and HbO2 for oxyhemoglobin A) The concentration of O2 is higher in the lungs and lower in the tissues. What effect does high [O2] have on the position of this equilibrium (2 points).

B) The normal pH of blood is 7.4. What is the concentration of H+ in normal blood (1 points).

C) If the blood pH is lowered by the presence of large amounts of acidic metabolism products, a condition known as acidois. What effect does lowering blood pH have on the ability of hemoglobin to transport O2. (2 points).

2. Solid NH4HS is introduced into an evacuated 0.500 L flask at 333 K. The following reaction takes place:
NH4HS (s) NH3 (g) + H2S (g)

Kp = 0.052 at 333 K The flask is then charged with 0.0128 mol of H2S (g). What are the equilibrium concentrations of NH3 and H2S. Show all of your work and provide the answer using correct number of significant figures (5 points).

3. A 1.0 L buffer solution contains 0.100 mol HC2H3O2 and 0.100 mol NaC2H3O2. The value of Ka for HC2H3O2 is
1.8 105. Because the initial amounts of acid and conjugate base are equal, the pH of the buffer is equal to pKa = log(1.8 105) = 4.74. Calculate the new pH after adding 10.0 mL of 1.00 M HCl to original buffer. Show all of your work and provide the answer using correct number of significant figures. (5 points)
