Final Week Outline for Notes

Chapter 12 Share your thoughts about chapter 12 with someone next to you o Reflect back to our first day of class o We read an article I used to think now I think o Teaching Social Studies Past and Future o How would you like your teaching of social studies to be different? I do not want to give my students a huge text book and tell them to learn from it. o What do your lessons reflect? The way you were taught? The way you think is best to teach social studies? While I have had negative experiences, I have also had positive ones. And to be quiet honest I can see my lesson plan falling in between these experiences because I am still trying to find the way I want to teach social studies and I am still learning how that reflects my lesson plans. J Gah you want evidence but I guess the best thing I can say is that you can see from my lessons that I am still struggling to find how to teach social studies concepts. In the same manor however all of my lessons have books in them and for some reason I love the idea of finding age appropriate books for the students to learn from. Integrated Learning What students are asked to relate to in school is increasingly artificial, cut off from the human experiences subject matter is supposed to reflect. Questioning o Socratic: seeks to get the other person to answer their own questions by making them think and drawing out the answer from them.

o Concept Attainment: the teachers takes a concept to be studied and prepares examples of what the concept is and is not. Examples are presented to students as yes or no items. Students must compare and contrast attributes of the items, hypothesize, and articulate the concept. Identify the attributes of the concept Come up with Yes or No examples that cross the curriculum Put the Example in the order you will ask them. Technology in the Social Studies Classroom o Wikis: A website that allows for easy creation and editing. Many people can contribute from a variety of servers or browsers. Group Project: students create a wiki on a given subject or topic Personal Project: students create a wiki out of a personal interest and to build a community. Factors driving choices can be materials, behavior, moral, or some combination of all three. Most of us want to maximize our benefits, while minimizing our costs. Consequences lie in the future Predictability improves decision-making Unpredictability leads to inconsistent decision-making Applying Cost, Chocies, and Consequences to make sound decisions. o Identify the problem: o Analyze alternative solutions and select the two best o Make a list of the foreseeable positive and the negative consequences of each choice. Be sure to differentiate between the short-run and long run when evaluation consequences o Select the best choice. Economic systems influence choices My kindergartenhow to produce or how to sell and what to buy An economic system is the way societies organize themselves to answer the three basic questions of economics: o What to produce? o How to produce it? o For whom to produce it? Incentives produce predictable responses my kindergarten lesson plan Monetary and non-monetary

That which is subsidized or rewarded will increase, and that which is taxed or penalized will decrease. To change behavior, change the incentive. Sometimes it is only with hindsight that predictability becomes obvious! Do what you do best, trade for the rest kindergarten lesson plan (As long as the trade is voluntary, both parties are better off). Trying to produce everything yourself limits both production and consumption Trade works best when there is: o Honesty o Transparency o Expected gain for both parties The gain for both parties does not need to be equal in order to be valuable Economic thinking is marginal thinking nothing honeslty In thinking economically, economists coined the term marginal to describe the cost or benefit of attaining one more unit of something. Quantity and quality of resources impact living standards perspective lesson? The four factors of production o Natural Resources (Land) o Human Resources (Labor) o Capital Resources (Equipment) o Entrepreneurial Resources (risk, profit motive) There are two ways for any given sector of an economy to grow by taking growth from another sector and adding it to ones own, or by growing the economy as a whole with all sectors participating in that growth (although not necessarily equally).

o Over time, living standards rise by increasing the output of one or more of the four factors, even if the other three remain stable. Prices are determined by the market forces of supply and demand and are constantly changing. Supply and demand are the two words that economists use most often because they are the forces that make market economies work. These concepts work most efficiently in COMPETITIVE markets.
