HISTORY

Some history about the Chinook tribe was when the white settlers arrived near Washington. The Chinooks were kind to them and were very successful at trading with too. They also helped them gather and hunt food. Overtime the settlers spread diseases like malaria, smallpox, and measles that killed a lot of people in their tribe. Years later when more settlers arrived, they lost a lot of their land and most of the remaining tribe members became slaves.

REGION
The chinook Indians are original people west coast. They lived near the Columbia river in present day Oregon and Washington. The Chinook Indians have lived (and still do) in their ancestral homelands for about 10,000 years. The ancestral homeland of the Chinook people is: From West to East from the mouth of the Columbia. The Chinook Indians of the United States lived in the Pacific Northwest area. The Chinook tribe practised slavery. They were made up of several tribes which are cathlamet, Clatsop, Clackamas and Watlata.

CULTURE AND CUSTOMS

Their culture includes performing at ceremonies called Potlatches. The leader of the tribe gives each family something he treasures to show off his wealthiness and to keep his status as the leader. Next, they tell legends about some of the great warriors like Talapus and Shikla to keep their stories going. During the winter, they store as many pieces of food as they can to survive the coldness. They also love to go on canoe journeys in the summer so they can catch many fish for their families, have big feasts, or explore different lands. Lastly, they traded various items they had like fish, shells, meat, and different types of clothing.

CLOTHING

The women from the Chinook tribe wore short skirts made out of cedar bark or grass. The men wore breech-clouts. The men hardly wore any clothes at all. They used rush capes in the rain. And the cold weather they wore fur robes and moccasins on their feet.Men also wore a cape or a piece of fur. They either kept their hair down or braided it.

FOOD
The Chinook tribe ate fish, deer, birds, clams shellfish, and seaweed berries. While the hunted the women gathered clams, shellfish, seaweed berries and roots. The main thing they ate was fish.At the end of the ice age they hunted big animals. They gathered lots of plants, nuts and berries. What they mostly caught was salmon when it was the salmon run. They used bow and arrows to hunt the elk and deer. They ate acorns, wapato's and plants that grew in the wetlands.

SHELTER

They lived in rectangular cedarplank houses made with bark roofs. Usually these houses were large they were up to 70 feet long and each one of the houses housed an entire extended family. They had long wooden houses in rows where they lived.Families shared pit houses with other people in their tribe. I the houses they had no windows. And some of their rooms were underground.

TRANSPORTATION

They often used canoes for transportation or walked. The canoes were made of cedar of fire logs.Chinook Indians mainly used long, dugout canoes for transportation by use of water. For ground transportation, they typically walked. The Chinook were a tribe of the Native Americans and used the canoes to travel to the coast for trading purposes. But today, they use cars and others still use canoes.

INTERESTING FACTS

A few interesting facts about the Chinook tribe was they were great wood carvers. They made things like canoes, totem poles, and vast houses. Another fact about them is that they created a language which included Chinook, French, English, and Russian. And when some of the members were sick, the leader would get a rattle made of animal skin to heal them. Finally, when there were infants the people of the tribe would push their head down. They thought if you had a flat head you would be very smart.
