    Yunus(alayhissalam)wasarighteousanddevotedservantofAllah wholivedinthelargetownofNineveh,ontheshoresofthesea.He wasappointedbyAllahTa`alatobeHismessengerandtocalltothe onenessofAllahandtoperforminggooddeeds. Butthepeoplelaughedathimandpaidnoattentiontohiscall. Yunus(alayhissalam)becameangryandlostpatience;hewasso disgustedwiththeattitudeofhispeoplethathedecidedtoleave Ninevehandtaketothesea. Hardlyhadheleftthecitywhentheskiesbegantochangecolorand lookedasiftheywereonfire.Thepeoplewerefilledwithfearbythis sight.TheyrecalledthedestructionofthepeopleofAd,Thamudand Nuh.Wastheirstobeasimilarfate?Slowly,faithenteredtheir hearts.TheyallgatheredonthemountainandstartedtoaskAllahfor Hismercyandforgiveness.Themountainsechoedwiththesoundof theircries.Itwasaspecialmoment,filledwithsincererepentance. AllahremovedHiswrathandshoweredHisblessingsuponthem onceagain.Whenthethreateningstormwaslifted,theyprayedfor thereturnofYunus(alayhissalam)sothathecouldguidethem. Meanwhile,whileYunus(alayhissalam)wasaboardtheship,itwas rockedbyastormandhewasthrownoverboardandAllahTa`ala commandedawhaletoswallowhimup. Ashelayinthebellyofthefish,Yunus(alayhissalam)wondered whyhewasbeingpunishedwhenAllahTa`alahadchosenhimtobe Hismessenger;wherehadhegonewrong?Hethenrealizedthathe

    shouldnothaveactedinhaste,becauseAllahTa`alawishedthathe bepatientandmorepersuasive. Heprayedforforgivenessandforanotheropportunitytoprove himself.Andcriedthroughthedepthsofdarkness,ThereisnoLord butYou:glorybetoYou:Iwasindeedwrong!(21:87) Hisprayerwasthis:


    LailahaIllaAntaSubHanakaInniKuntuMinazZalimeen AllahAlmightysawthesincererepentanceofYunus(alayhissalam) andheardhisinvocationinthewhalesstomach.Allahcommanded thewhaletosurfaceandthrowYunus(alayhissalam)ontoanisland. Thewhaleobeyedandswamtothefarthestsideoftheocean. Hisbodywasinflamedbecauseoftheacidsinsidethewhales stomach.Hewasill,andwhenthesunrose,itsrayburnedhis inflamedbodysothathewasonthevergeofscreamingforthepain. However,heenduredthepainandcontinuedtorepeathisinvocation toAllah. AlmightyAllahcausedavinetogrowtoconsiderablelengthover himforprotection.ThenAllahExaltedcausedYunustorecoverand forgavehim.AllahtoldYunusthatifithadnotbeenforhispraying toHim,hewouldhavestayedinthewhalesstomachtilltheDayof Judgment. AllahTa`alatoldYunus(alayhissalam):HadyourLordsowished, allpeopleeverywherewouldhavebeenbelievers.ButthatisnotHis way,sodonotforceanyonetotaketoOurpathunlesstheydoso willingly.[SurahYunus:99100]
