About the conference

Since 2007, this one day conference has been exploring the life options for young people with additional needs as they move into adulthood. Through identifying and sharing best practice, the conference will give delegates practical guidance to allow them to achieve the best possible transition for the young people they support. Presentations will be delivered by representatives from central government, housing and care providers, researchers and professionals with first hand experience of achieving the best for young people in transition.

Aims of the conference

To involve all stakeholders in a debate with young people about what they really want for their future. To provide practical guidance that can be taken back to the workplace. To empower young people and their parents to get the best from their transition experience. To encourage stakeholders who wish to engage young people and their parents and respond to their needs. To draw attention to wider transition issues.

Who attends?
Young people with additional needs, their parents and carers. Commissioning managers. Learning disability transition teams. Personalisation and individual budget teams. Housing option teams. Special educational needs coordinators (SENCOs). Providers of care and support services. Brokers. Special schools and colleges. Advocates.

The day is split into two parts, the main plenary session which will run throughout the course of the day and additional workshops which will run at specific times in breakout rooms. Delegates are free to move between the main conference room and the workshops as they wish, creating an agenda tailored to their needs.

About our partner

SoLO Life Opportunities is a charity which enables children, young people and adults with learning disabilities to enjoy social and leisure activities that the rest of us take for granted. After having successfully done their own transition events with the Council in previous years, SoLO came on board with Progress in 2012 to partner our transition event. We are now working together for the third year and SoLOs knowledge of the regional community in the West Midlands makes it possible for us to have a specific dialogue with schools, colleges and parent groups and allows us to ensure that more young people and their parents can attend this worthwhile event. SoLO also provides a Personal Assistants Service which enables people with a learning disability to live more independent lives.
