Thishastodowiththestructuralpowerofabstractionandmathematicalalgorithmsas wellasthefarreachingconsequencesoflogicalinduction.Inconnectionwiththe processesofmodellingandanalyzinginnaturalsciencesandtechnology,theyaccount forthefactthatmathematicsandtheoreticalphysicsareimportantfoundationpillarsand centralinnovativefactorsofourcivilization. Theeliteprogramoffersstudentsbothanindepthandbroadeducationintheoreticaland mathematicalphysics. Twoaspectsareofparticularimportance: Theinterdisciplinaritybetweenmoderntheoreticalphysicsandmathematics. Thebasicgoalhereistodemonstratethatphysicsandmathematicssharemany commonquestions. Thetransdisciplinarity,i.e.thetransferofknowledgefromonedisciplinetoarelated one. Thefocusforphysicsstudents,ontheonehand,isontheuseofmathematicalmethods, while,ontheotherhand,mathematiciansarebeingguidedinmodernphysicsquestions. Thetwoyearmastercourseisjointlyrunbythephysicsandmathematicsdepartmentsof LudwigMaximiliansUniversittMnchen(LMU)andTechnischeUniversittMmchen withsupportfromthephysicsdepartmentofFriedrichAlexanderUniversittErlangen Nrnberg. Therearecoursesinthefollowingareasoftheoreticalphysicsandmathematics: A:AdvancedandAppliedQuantumMechanics B:QuantumFieldTheoryandGaugeTheories C:Cosmology,GeneralRelativityandDifferentialGeometry D:StringtheoryandGeometry E:StatisticalPhysicsandStochastics Besidestheannualcoursestherewillbespecializedcoursesoncurrentsubjects.These specializedcourseswillbepresentedinanumberofformatsrangingfromordinary lecturesoverintensiveblockcoursestosummerschools.

    Besidesthemembersoftheprogram,visitingspecialistswillbepresentingadvanced courses.Thisallowsstudentstolearnabouttopicscloselyrelatedtouptodateresearch fromtheexpertsintherespectivefields.Furthermore,itgivestheopportunitytoestablish personalcontactswithresearchgroupswithwhichthe"Theoreticum"andMasterthesis projectscanbeperformed.Thelargenumberofparticipatinggroupsandinstitutes providesthestudentswithawiderangeofpossibleareasofspecializationandpotential placestolaterpursueaPh.D. Importantnote Pleasebeawarethatallinformationonthissiteisprovisionalandmightchangeatany time.Allprocedureswillhavetobeapprovedbytheappropriatecommitteesofthe universitiesinvolvedandtheBavarianministryforsciences,researchandthearts.
