Celebrate 50 Years of Globe-Sweeping Beatlemania

On February 7, 1964, The Beatles arrived at New Yorks John F. Kennedy Airport, greeted by scores of screaming, swooning fans who rushed the gate to catch a glimpse of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr as they took their first steps on American soil. Two nights later, on Sunday, February 9, 74 million viewers in the U.S. and millions more in Canada tuned in to CBS to watch The Beatles make their American television debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. In this cultural watershed moment in American history and one of the worlds top-viewed television events of all time, The Beatles performed five songs on the live broadcast. Beatlemania, already in full, feverish bloom in The Beatles native U.K., was unleashed with blissful fervor across America and around the world. The British Invasion had begun. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of these history-making events, The U.S. Albums, a new 13CD Beatles collection spanning 1964s Meet The Beatles! to 1970s Hey Jude, will be released January 21 by Apple Corps Ltd./Capitol. The Beatles U.S. albums differed from the bands U.K. albums in a variety of ways, including different track lists, song mixes, album titles, and art. The albums are presented in mono and stereo, with the exception of The Beatles Story and Hey Jude, which are in stereo only. Collected in a boxed set with faithfully replicated original LP artwork, including the albums inner sleeves, the 13 CDs are accompanied by a 64-page booklet with Beatles photos and promotional art from the time, as well as a new essay by American author and television executive Bill Flanagan. Also for a limited time, all of the albums (with the exception of The Beatles Story, an audio documentary album) will also be available for individual CD purchase. A Hard Days Night (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), The Beatles Story, Yesterday And Today, Hey Jude, and the U.S. version of Revolver make their CD debuts with these releases. The Recording Academy, AEG Ehrlich Ventures and CBS have announced The Night That Changed America: A GRAMMY Salute To The Beatles, a two-hour primetime entertainment special to air Sunday, February 9 at 8pm ET/PT, precisely 50 years to the day, date and time of The Beatles groundbreaking debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. RightDirection/Heartbreakers Biography: nd Marianas Trenchs guitarist, Matt Webb, is preparing to release his 2 solo project - a 4 song EP titled Right Direction. If Matt Webbs debut as a solo artist with 2011s Coda and Jacket presented seven different sides of the Vancouver-based musician, this years model is decidedly more direct in its approach. With this record, Matt had a clear idea of how it would sound: simple, organic, raw, and showcasing more personality. After wrapping up his touring schedule with main act, Marianas Trench, the always restless musician decamped to Armoury Studios with producer and co-writer Kevin Kevvy Mental to create four crystalline new songs that take a distinct turn from the quantum level of precision, planning, and craft that the Trench typically brings to its elaborate pop constructions. I wanted to hear more mistakes, more personality to this stuff, Matt explains. Its a different genre. Matt Webb rule of simplicity became a running joke in the studio. Nobody was allowed to get too flashy, except when it counted. Glassfords jazz-inflected drum fills in the bridge of Heartbreakers are all the more explosive as a result. Webbs fleet-fingered acoustic picking on 123 is like a leap into the fourth dimension after the placid, yet darker spaces the band establishes on Dont Turn Your Back on Me and Heartbreakers an Andy McKee influenced track on which Webb and Maher tag-team lead vocals. Radio: rd First single Right Direction is coming out at Hot AC radio February 3 , 2014. The track is a soulful, mid-tempo groover thats charmingly free of any fuss, with a Tom Petty feel to it. Return the Favor Take My Breath Away
Key Points: It's been a few years since New York-based We Are Scientists released a new offering. With a new record label in tow, Toronto-based Dine Alone Records, Keith Murray and Chris Cain are giving fans the kind of songs that put them on the global map and that weve been missing from our playlists - a five-track EP entitled Business Casual, which was released digitally on October 15, and is now available on vinyl as a limited 10. Murray & Cain recently trekked down south to the Everglades and Miami, FL and took a break from vacationing to film the music video for their new song Return the Favor. The video was directed by Dan Monick. Business Casual illuminates the full range of We Are Scientists, from the big chorus of Return the Favor to the visceral rock track Dumb Luck- both songs were produced by Chris Coady (Beach House, Smith Westerns, Yuck) at Magic Shop in NYC. Fans of the band Berlin and the classic 80s blockbuster Top Gun will be pleased to hear a smooth, pedal steel version of the classic love song, Take My Breath Away for which the band also made a video that brilliantly parodies the film. The track and Good Answer were recorded at Atomic Heart in NYC with Claudius Mittendorfer (Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, Muse, Interpol). We Are Scientists shocked themselves and impressed many others with their 2005 debut With Love & Squalor, which sold over 100,000 copies in the UK, and led to a sold-out UK tour, including two nights at Brixton Academy. They have since released two full-length albums Brain Thrust Mastery (Virgin Records, 2008) and Barbara (Masterswan Recordings, 2010). All three albums charted in the UK, with singles After Hours, Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt, The Great Escape, Its a Hit and Chick Lit all charting in the US/UK. They have appeared on US late night talk shows, The Late Show with David Letterman, Conan and Carson Daly and performed at Coachella, Sasquatch, and All Points West festivals. In the UK, the band played the Reading and Leeds main stage and Glastonbury Festivals among other world-wide touring. Touring: Fake Shark will be on tour across Canada starting March 2014 While still touring and supporting their 2013 release, Liar, Fake Shark, Real Zombie are announcing the re-release and re-mastering of their two earlier albums Zebra Zebra and Meeting People is Terrible as one ideal package titled Dont Forget. Included in the package, being released by Light Organ Records, is a collection of b-sides that were never released from both records, as well as demos from the full band and Garageband songs from frontman Kevvy Mental. Mike Shantz, who did the artwork for Liar has done artwork for this collection, which is his interpretation of an amalgam of the artwork from the first two records. The idea of older material seeing the light of day is exciting in that, you can see the progression of where our sound has gone, and while it's much different, it makes a lot of sense, says Kevvy. We've always been a band proud to wear our influences on our sleeve, and we're no different now than we were then. Where we may have had a Bad Brains double time break, we'd probably have an Everything Everything 3 over 4 part now. The spirit is the same. Project overview: Mute and Spoon are pleased to announce the release of VILLA WUNDERBAR, a 2CD set, compiling the work of Can founder Irmin Schmidts solo and soundtrack work, including two unreleased Can remixes and a collection of soundtrack pieces personally compiled by long-term collaborator Wim Wenders. CD1 is a compilation of Irmin Schmidts extensive work as a solo artist over the past 30 years. It is accompanied by sleeve notes by the English writer Duncan Fallowell, author of most lyrics on the album, whilst CD2 - selected and presented by the filmmaker Wim Wenders - is an insight into Schmidts vast work as a composer for film and television for which Wenders has written extensive sleeve notes. The two CD compilation includes tracks such as Villa Wunderbar, Kick On The Floods and Bohemian Step, alongside unreleased remixes by Schmidt of two Can tracks, Alice and Last Night Sleep and an unreleased extract from La Fermosa, a ballet by Youri Vmos, entitled Btes De Passage. After an extensive classical education as pianist, conductor and composer, Irmin Schmidt who studied under Stockhausen and Ligeti - established Can in the late 60s combining classic new music with rock and jazz. The bands powerful influence has never diminished, and their indelible mark is apparent in the bands who freely acknowledge their importance - from Portishead, James Murphy, New Order, Factory Floor, Public Image Ltd, Mogwai, Kanye West (who sampled Sing Swan Song) and Radiohead - as well as across other disciplines such as visual art and literature. After Can disbanded in the late 70s, Irmin Schmidt returned to his work as a solo artist and the result is a vast oeuvre, which includes a series of solo albums (Toy Planet (1981), Musk At Dusk (1987), Impossible Holidays (1991)), an opera (Gormenghast (2000) based on the Mervyn Peak trilogy), several releases with English composer Kumo (Masters Of Confusion (2001), Axolotl Eyes (2008), Flies, Guys & Choirs (2008) and Cyclopean EP (2013)), a ballet (La Fermosa by Youri Vmos) and over 100 film scores (Snowland, 2005 dir Hans W. Geissendrfer, Palermo Shooting, 2008, dir Wim Wenders), amongst others) Schmidt's sound-trips combine what normally competes and conflicts: rock, pop, jazz, classic, electronic, ambient, drum 'n bass, waltz, eastern ... He is a musical alchemist.

Project overview: A few weeks before The Dream Syndicate entered the studio to record their seminal The Days Of Wine
And Roses album, they set up in Studio ZZZZ at KPFK in Los Angeles for a live set. In attendance were members of R.E.M., the Bangles and Green On Red. On February 4, 2014, you can be there, too. The Day Before Wine And Rosesavailable on CD for the first time in 15 yearsdocuments the genesis of one of the most important pieces of the Paisley Underground puzzle. The band (Steve Wynn: guitar & vocals, Karl Precoda: guitar, Kendra Smith: bass and Dennis Duck: drums) began playing at 2 AM according to Wynns liner notes, and that could not have been a more perfect time for the ethereal sounds of this highly influential band. Comprised of originals that appeared on their first EP and others which would later appear on their classic debut, as well as covers of classics by Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Donovan, The Day Before Wine And Roses is not only a release that presents an important time in alternative music, but defines it. Packaged with a full color booklet, the packaging also features the complete 1994 liners and a postscript from original and current reissue producer Pat Thomas. The Dream Syndicate will be playing live shows in late 2013 with The Bangles, Rain Parade and The Three OClock (whose The Hidden World Revealed was released to acclaim by Omnivore in June), and the music world will be anxious to (re)experience what made this band so revered. There are times when it is difficult to remember what happened the day before. With The Day Before Wine And Roses, that will no longer be a problem.

Project overview: Camper Van Beethoven signed with Virgin Records in 1988 and delivered a record that defied those who thought the band might sell out. The band returned the following year with what most deem their masterpiece Key Lime Pie. Omnivore Recordings is excited to reissue Camper Van Beethovens Virgin Records output, including 1989s classic, Key Lime Pie. Once again produced by Dennis Herring (Elvis Costello, Counting Crows), Key Lime Pie continued the journey into the world of CVB, but with higher production value and sound than had been heard before. From a track about Jack Ruby to a cover of Status Quos Pictures Of Matchstick Men, Key Lime Pie was a slice above the rest and a fitting dessert for the 1980s. This reissue finds nine bonus tracks on the CD. The nearly hourlong album was originally pressed on one LP, but Omnivore has expanded it to two LPs (for better sound) and added a bonus track to Side 4. Key lime colored vinyl for the first pressing (with black to follow) will make fans race to grab this sonic upgrade. Both CD and LP include new liners and photos. Brotherhood Is the Band that Bassist Phil "Fang" Volk, Guitarist Drake "The Kid" Levin and Drummer Mike "Smitty" Smith Formed After Leaving Paul Revere & the Raiders The Complete Recordings Includes All Three Albums They Recorded for RCA, None of Which Have Ever Been on CD Right at the height of popularity for Paul Revere and the Raiders, the bands core power trio of Phil Fang Volk (bass), Drake The Kid Levin (guitar) and Mike Smitty Smith (drums) left to pursue their own more ambitious musical goals. Subsequent lawsuits and a run of bad luck meant that the first, self-titled album by their new band, Brotherhood, would be delayed, and received little notice at the time. Yet, by mixing a wealth of sociallyconscious original numbers with hard-rocking reinterpretations of tunes by the Mamas and the Papas and Joe South, Brotherhood was a band brimming with promise. Between 1968 and 1969 the band released two more albums, one under their own name, the other a third, wildly experimental record (Friend Sound / Joyride) that drew upon Cage, Zappa and Stockhausen (and acid) for its influences. Bringing together music that has been out of print for over 40 years and never available on CD until now, Brotherhood: The Complete Recordings includes all three albums the group cut for RCA on two CDs, plus a definitive history of the band by Bill Kopp, based on extensive research and a lengthy interview with Phil Volk, who contributes a note of his own. In the Glare of Burning Churches was the 5th release by black metal pioneers Graveland and very likely the most influential recording of the genre. It was originally released in 1993 on cassette on Witching Hour Productions and has been called "The most hateful black metal demo of all time". Its "inspired by the 'Holy War' waged in the Norwegian Black Metal underground against christianity". After establishing his own quartet in 1960, the paths John Coltrane trail-blazed over the following two years would alienate and enchant jazz fans in equal number. Vilified as anti-jazz by some critics, the saxophonists recordings explored an eclectic range of musical influences: the blues, folk music, Spanish, African and Indian flavours, the twelve-tone system and popular Broadway songs. Dr. Feelgood was the ultimate working band. From their formation in 1971 to lead vocalist Lee Brilleauxs untimely death in 1994, the band never left the road, playing hundreds of gigs every year. Throughout their entire career, Dr. Feelgood never left simple, hard-driving rock & roll behind, and their devotion to the blues and R&B earned them a devoted fan base. First released on vinly in 1975 and then on CD in 1990 by Grand Records, Malpractice is now available again on vinyl after being out of print for decades. Lee Brilleaux's lead vocals and and Wilko Johnson's guitars crunch and slash their way through 11 songs, starting with a Bo Diddley number; they turn "Rollin' and Tumblin'" into a rock & roll piece, and also turn in a brace of memorable originals, most notably "You Shouldn't Call the Doctor (If You Can't Afford the Bills" and "Don't Let Your Daddy Know," both by Johnson. Perhaps the most sublime moment is the transition from Comes a Time to Eyes of the World (and then to the out-of-nowhere Orange Tango Jam) during the second set of the Syracuse show, but both shows are full of sparkling performances propelled by the newly reunited Rhythm Devils. Between January 1949 and March 1950, Miles Davis and several other young musicians recorded an album of music composed for an unusual ensemble of trumpet, alto sax, baritone sax, trombone, french horn, tuba, piano, bass and drums. Under the direction of trombonist and composer, Jeff Presslaff, The Complete Rebirth of the Cool recreates the conditions of that original burst of creativity: a team of probing musical thinkers and the means to compose and perform their new ideas. The music reflects the sensibilities of the original recording, but these are emphatically new pieces that reflect the composers personal experiences, as well as the changes in the musical landscape over the past sixty years. Presslaff has a strong track record of successfully coordinating collaborative composition projects, including the Jazz Composers Ensemble, All Winds, Papa Mambo and much notable work with the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra. He is joined by some of the leading lights of Western Canada's creative jazz community, including the already eminent Dean McNeil and Ken Gold, as well as soon-to-be acclaimed composers Will Bonness, Jonathan Stevens and Danielle Baert. Not only did the 20-song double album include classic 60s cuts like California Dreamin, Monday, Monday, Creeque Alley and Dedicated to the One I Love, but it served as something of an audio documentary of the band, offering rehearsals, outtakes and interview snippets from John Phillips and Cass Elliot in between the tunes. It also offered a photo-packed, 16 page booklet with excellent liner notes by Andy Wickham alongside the dozens of rare images, all of which we have reproduced here for this historic collections CD debut. Both ABC-Dunhill Albums by the Los Angeles Blues-Rock Band Smith on One CD Minus-Plus Has Never Been Reissued in Any Format Until Now Smith were discovered in an L.A. nightclub by none other than Del Shannon, who got them signed to ABC-Dunhill and arranged their smash hit cover of Baby, Its You. They also boasted one of the best albeit largely unknown female singers of the 60s in the person of Gayle McCormick, who, with her blonde good looks and powerful, bluesy voice, seemed destined to lead Smith to big things (she did go on to record a series of solo albums for Dunhill). However, the band broke up after these two albums, and while the first album was reissued on a long out-ofprint (and now very expensive) CD, the second album has never been reissued in any format until now. Remastered by Maria Triana at Battery Studios in NYC, with liner notes by Richie Unterberger and added photos. One of the missing links in the late-60s L.A. scene!

Burt Bacharach's Soundtrack for the 1979 film Together? Enlisted the Talents of Paul Anka, Jackie DeShannon, Michael MacDonald and Libby Titus Sometimes a movies commercial flop can condemn a great soundtrack to obscurity. Such was the case with director Armenia Balduccis steamy 1979 film Amo non Amo. This Italian drama starring Jacqueline Bisset, Maximilian Schell and Terence Stamp was originally scored by Italian prog/symphonic horror rock band Goblin, but when the film was slated for an American release with the title Together?, the great Burt Bacharach was enlisted to provide a new, more accessible musical score. And Burt deliveredalong with a bunch of friends! The songs lyricist was Paul Anka, who wrote lyrics for the dramatic ballads I Dont Need You Anymore and Find Love, both sung by Jackie DeShannon in a sumptuous reunion with Bacharach, and the soulful Ive Got My Mind Made Up, performed by Michael McDonald with splendid orchestral backing. For his part, Bacharachs own instrumental compositions are melodic in his classic fashion but arranged very much in the modernized vein of his late-70s Futures and Woman albums, with unusual textures and surprising flourishes. This long-lost nugget from the Bacharach catalog makes its worldwide CD debut outside of a limited, high-ticket Japanese edition on Real Gone Music, with notes by Joe Marchese featuring contributions from all of the principals involved and remastering by Mark Wilder at Battery Studios in New York. A must for Bacharach fans!
The Cult Classic Soundtrack to the 1970 Sci-Fi Movie Musical Starring Olivia Newton-John First Time Reissued in Any Format Produced by Don Kirshner and Harry Saltzman Long before she was Sandy, the good girl of Rydell High, or Kira, the Olympian muse of the roller disco Xanadu, Olivia NewtonJohn was just plain Livvy, the girl singer with dreams of the big time in the 1970 sci-fi movie musical Toomorrow. This littleknown motion picture was the brainchild of music impresario Don Kirshner and Harry Saltzman, best known for coproducing the first nine James Bond films with Albert R. Broccoli. And Toomorrow wasnt just the movies title. After a lengthy talent search, Kirshner and Saltzman assembled the band Toomorrow, whom the music mogul modestly described as the best-looking total group that ever existed. Why the misspelling? As drummer Karl Chambers put it in the film itself, I dig it! Were too much, were too morrow! At least Kirshner thought sohe had visions of Toomorrow achieving the success of his previous creations the Monkees and the Archies. But, weighed down by legal problems surrounding Saltzman, and a premise Toomorrow was going to save a race of aliens called the Alphoids from an existence-threatening sterility of soundthat was silly even by late-60s B-movie standards, the movie went nowhere. The soundtrack, however, boasting the nascent superstar Newton-John, has attained serious cult status over the years, and our Real Gone release marks its first reissue in any format, with notes by Joe Marchese and remastering by Maria Triana at Battery Studios in NYC.

Key Points: After the eruptive excitement of their Live At Belleville album, which was widely praised around the world (and secured for leader Arild Andersen the Prix du Musicien Europen 2008 from the Academie du Jazz in France), the trio now delivers a studio album. In Oslos Rainbow, bassist Andersen, tenorist Tommy Smith and drummer Paolo Vinaccia rechanneled their musics energies into a program of soulful ballads and mid-tempo free-floating sound explorations. Dutch-born Bernard Haitink made his debut with the Concertgebouw Orchestra on 7 November 1956. From 1963 Haitink was Principal Conductor, a position he held for 25 years.
