A band brake is to be designed for a winch to lift a load of 20 kN through a 15 m height by a rope wire wound on a barrel of 450 mm diameter. The hoisting cycle is 3 minutes, out of which the actual braking time is 60 seconds. The angle of contact between the band and the brake drum is 210. The brake drum may be keyed to the same shaft. Give the complete design. Or

The back gear mechanism of a lathe is to have a speed reduction from cone pulley to the spindle of 8:1 with a centre distance 250 mm approximately. The gears used are of 20 full depth involute spur gears. The drive is obtained from a 300 mm diameter pulley fixed into a 3.5 hp motor running at 550 rpm. The pulley drives another pulley 550 mm diameter on cross section which carries a 3 stepped cone pulley of 400 mm, 300 mm and 200 mm diameter. The safe tension per cm width of the belt is 200N. Ratio of tension T 1 / T 2 = 3 Safe stress in the arm of the pulley is 40 MPa. Design the following :
