A band brake is to be designed for a winch to lift a load of 20 kN through a 15 m height by a rope wire wound on a barrel of 450 mm diameter. The hoisting cycle is 3 minutes, out of which the actual braking time is 60 seconds. The angle of contact between the band and the brake drum is 210°. The brake drum may be keyed to the same shaft. Give the complete design. Or

The back gear mechanism of a lathe is to have a speed reduction from cone pulley to the spindle of 8:1 with a centre distance 250 mm approximately. The gears used are of 20° full depth involute spur gears. The drive is obtained from a 300 mm diameter pulley fixed into a 3.5 hp motor running at 550 rpm. The pulley drives another pulley 550 mm diameter on cross section which carries a 3 stepped cone pulley of 400 mm, 300 mm and 200 mm diameter. The safe tension per cm width of the belt is 200N. Ratio of tension T 1 / T 2 = 3 Safe stress in the arm of the pulley is 40 MPa. Design the following :
