NAME In the Novel Lord of the Flies, Jack is described with his full name as Jack Merridew.

Golding uses his full name to signify im ortance and to make Jack seem roud of whom he is. !owever, "iggy is the nickname of the #fat boy$ whose name we never find out. %he Nickname is given to the boy as a re lacement to the ro er name and is used as a descri tor of the hysical characteristic & Fatness. APEARANCE Jack is resented as stereoty ical from his a earance. %he stereoty e is that all redheads have a fiery tem er. Jack has red hair and is #tall, thin and bony$, #his face was crum led and freckled, and ugly without silliness$. !is fiery hair and ugly a earance gives us clues to his hot'headed, un leasant character. %he ad(ective #ugly$ cou led with #without silliness$ suggests his a earance is ugly in a serious, mature way and eo le wouldn)t laugh at him. It could also mean that eo le should be scared of him. !is visual descri tion hel s us understand his tem er, and the bad'guy role in the Novel. "iggy is shown as the weak victim by his a earance. "iggy has many hysical disadvantages because he)s short$,$ very fat$ and has #asthma$ as well as glasses. *ecause of this he couldn)t do manual labor so he was #sitting near but giving no hel $. %his caught Jack)s eye and made him dislike "iggy which caused him to treat him #contem tuously$ and #snatch the glasses$ of "iggy. *ecause "iggy is unable to work or hunt like the other boys, %ack see)s him as weak and useless and then bullies him. SPEECH Jack is vicious and disres ectful seen by his dialogue and his language becomes more informal as he becomes more savage. +ue to iggy)s hysical weaknesses, Jack s eaks to his without res ect and #fiercely$ says #,ou shut u -$ whenever "iggy tries to s eak. !e dislikes the fact iggy disagrees with his idea to build a fire and says #. fat lot you tried, you (ust sat$. %he sarcasm insults iggy. /hen iggy tried to be careful Jack said #,ou)re always scared. ,ah' Fatty-$ %he word #always$ shows how Jack thinks that "iggy is scared all the time and could also mean that he can)t do anything because he)s always scared. !is s eech becomes more informal as he becomes savage. .t first, he s eaks correctly when he says #I ought to be chief$, later on he says #Got fed u , and gone for a bathe$. %his is an incom lete sentence with slang. Furthermore, the younger children who start of as #small boys$ become #Little)uns$ and then #Littl)uns$ and finally #Littluns$. Golding uses the contraction of the word to show how the slang increases throughout the novel and how the more savage they became, the worse their 0nglish got. /e can see "iggy as an outsider and intelligent but at the same time uneducated from his s eech. !e first reali1es that #Nobody don)t know we)re here$. %his isn)t grammatically accurate but a smart observation nonetheless. %his could show that he)s from a oorer educated area than the other boys. !e also decided to call the others using the conch and make a list of names. %hese show his good knowledge but oor dialogue. ACTIONS Jack)s actions become savage'like, the longer he is on the island. .t first, he can)t kill the ig he sees because of the #enormity of the knife descending and cutting into living flesh2 because of the unbearable blood$. %he noun #enormity$ shows how (ack thinks killing a ig is the e3treame scale of something erceived as bad or morally wrong. !owever, he 4uickly uts aside any doubts when soon he thinks of nothing but hunting. #.ll you can talk about is ig, ig, ig-$ 5al h says angryily. !e was bent, #down like a s rinter$ his #nose only a few inches from the earth$ and then he was #dog'like$, #on all'fours$ hunting. %he words #doglike$ used to describe his body shows his savage behavior. In addition, he carried a #shar ened stick$, wore a #knife'belt$ and had eyes in frustration which seemed #nearly mad$. !is lust for meat consumed his mind. .lthough Jack says near the start #/e)re not savages$, it contradicts what he becomes later on. .fter, he doesn)t care about the rules or being civili1ed as he starts to hunt for meat. "iggy)s actions are kind, considerate and mature. !e hel s the boy with the birthmark talk about the #snake'thing$6$beastie$. "iggy #knelt by him$, #listening and inter reting to the assembly$. %he word #knelt$ could suggest iggy kneeling down to listen and also how he res ects the small boy and believes that he should be allowed to s eak. %his also shows great fairness when he shouts #Let him have it$ to sto the little boy from crying. "iggy also has the most mature attitude com ared to any of the boys on the island. !e scornfully sees the other boys #.cting like a crowd of kids$ which ironically shows how he acts mature even though he is a kid himself. In conclusion, Jack is the novel)s best re resentative of the instinct of the savagery, violence and desire for ower. From the beginning of the novel, Jack desires ower above all other things. !e)s furious when 5al h is elected leader instead of him. %he first time he encounters a ig, he)s unable to kill it, but soon he becomes obsessed with hunting and devotes himself to the task. Jack easily ada ts into island and the race for survival because he becomes more savage'like. "iggy is the outsider, not only by s eech but by fat, ass'mar and s ecs and reluctance to manual labor. !e)s also kind and intelligent. "iggy)s knowledge leads to rogress and order on the island. !e re resents the scientific, rational erson. Jack and "iggy are somewhat o osites with names, s eech and actions but they both re resent ma(or characters in the novel to ortray human behavior in an environment where civili1ation no longer has meaning.
