The Air India Timeline

1932-The aviation department of Tata Sons formed. 1938-The airline was renamed as Tata Air Services, which later became Tata Airlines. 1946-Tata Airline a joint stock company. 1947 Centre buys 49% of Air India. 2004- Air India launched a wholly owned low cost airline called AirIndia Express. 2007 The government decided to bring both the airlines, including Air India Express and Indian Airlines' low cost subsidiary Alliance Air under the control one body.

Logo

The logo of the new airline is a red coloured flying swan with the 'Konark Chakra' in orange, placed inside it. The flying swan has been morphed from Air India's characteristic logo, 'The Centaur', whereas the 'Konark Chakra' is reminiscent of Indian's logo. The new logo features prominently on the tail of the aircraft.

Mascot

Symbolizes graciousness and high living. Somewhere along the line his creators gave him a distinctive personality: his outsized moustache, the striped turban and his aquiline nose. He has completed 56 years and become the most recognizable mascot the world over.

Air India Services sliding down

After its merger with Indian Airlines Air India saw a downfall in terms of every aspect including its services. The Unions at Air India had a very indifferent attitude . The HR practices were skewed which led to further inefficiency and the sense of belonging of its employees was long lost.

Revival of Air India

There has been a qualitative improvement in the functioning (of Air India) . An upward trend in passenger traffic had led to improvement in yields. The new Air India Board is having a complete review of the airlines functioning. They have formed four subcommittees (on audit, finance, strategy and HR) for the purposernment could consider restructuring the carrier if it did not come out of the present financial rut by divesting some of its stake.

Staff

Massive recruitment Drives.: The national carrier launches a drive for large-scale recruitment of pilots, flight attendants and other staff like ramp agents and customer service personnel.

Recruitment even at the higher management level. Work Contracts :& Salary structures are fixed for the crew, pilots, ground staff . The salary structures for the permanent & temporary staff both vary.

On Board Services

Aircraft structure The spacious seating arrangement of the various airplanes. In-Flight Entertainment: From Hollywood classics to Hindi soap operas all are present to deliver the perfect entertainment. Frequent Flyer Programme: It is Indias first frequent flyer programme and is claimed to be one of the most rewarding programmes in the region . Online Check ins :Air India passengers confirm their presence on a flight via the Internet and typically print their own boarding passes, through a feature called online check-in. Premium Lounges:The Maharaja Lounge is available for the use of First and Business class passengers. Air India shares lounges with other international airlines at international airports that do not have a Maharaja Lounge available.

Additional Services

Air India has its own football club incorporating many Indian international players. Air India Air Transport Services Limited (AIATSL) is a PSU of the Government of India. AIATSL is a subsidiary of Air India and is headquartered in Mumbai.The company provides ground handling services (cargo, passenger, baggage) at various airports in India. Air India Charters Limited (AICL) is another Public Sector Undertaking of the Government of India. Air India serves 60 domestic destinations and 31 international destinations in 19 countries across Australia, Asia, Europe and North America.

Livery

Air India's livery was mostly painted in red and white colours. The bottoms of the aircraft remain metal and unpainted but the upper portion is given a white background along with the airline's name written in red. 2007 Pre-merger livery :On 15 May 2007, Air India refreshed its livery, making the Rajasthani arches along the windows slightly smaller, extending a stylised cheatline from the vertical tail of the aircraft to the nose, and painting a small portion of the underbelly red. Additionally, engine nacelles are now deep red, and a gold-coloured version of the airline's stylised Konark trademark now adorns both the vertical tail and engine nacelles.

2007- Post-merger livery:On 22 May 2007, Air India and Indian unveiled their new livery. The logo of the new airline is a Flying Swan with the Konark Chakra placed inside it. The Flying Swan has been morphed from Air Indias characteristic logo.

Face of the Indian civil industry. It yet imbibes trust in its customers. Air India Express, was a low cost airline launched by Air India. Air India can look at the low cost segment through this airline. Warmth exulted by the airline does make it a class apart from other airlines.

Air India surely has the potential to soar heights. It require s a little more co-operation from its internal customers . Regain the lost trust.
