Terrestrial and Satellite-based Radio Systems (Lectures & Small Projects)

Rolf Jakoby, Margarita Puentes, Mara Roig Parras Cycle: SS, (3+1); Exams: oral

Guidelines of this lecture: This lecture will be given in English. Copies of the slides presented during this lecture as well as a written script, including most of the lectures topics, will be available on our web pages http://www.hf.e-technik.tu-darmstadt.de/de/teaching/veranstaltung.php?lehre_id=12. The aim of this lecture is to give some physical fundamentals, an overview and most important strategies, techniques and components of wireless systems, including RFID, satellite and terrestrial radio systems. Beside gaining some theoretical knowledge of wireless methodology and techniques, an important point is of this lecture is to link the different parts in order to be able to decide which of the strategies, techniques or technologies are best suited for a specific application in practice, taking into account various aspects such as propagation, building blocking, the operating frequency, band limitations, non-linear effects, esthetic aspects, and so on. Instead of exercises in addition to the lectures, any student has to carry out an applicationoriented small project in groups of three students. The way of how you solve the problems and get the results has to be presented by the complete group within 20 minutes per group and, in addition, a small written report of 4 to 6 pages has to be hand over. Both will be taken into account as a part of the exams at the end of this lecture. The lecture is structured into four parts: Part 1: Antennas, Wireless System Design, Passive Sensing, Satellite-based Radio Systems and Chipless RFID (Jakoby) Part 2: The Mobile Radio Channel (Puentes) Part 3: Terrestrial Mobile Communication Systems (Roig-Parras) Part 4: Projects and Presentations (Puentes, Roig-Parras) 0 Introduction of Wireless Systems (slides) 1 Antennas for Wireless Systems 1.1 Antenna Fundamentals and Basic Parameters 1.2 Dipole Antennas 1.2.1 Ideal dipole with uniform current distribution 1.2.2 Crossed-dipole antenna 1.3 Effective Aperture of Antennas 1.4 Aperture Antennas 1.4.1 Area coverage (footprint) 1.4.2 Multibeam, multimode antennas 1.4.3 Cross-polarisation of a reflector antenna 1.5 Phased-Array Antennas
